And yet we all know that PCs are far superior, and will always be able to out perform a ps3 image

Almost $10 grand for a video game console?  I wonder if this guy crushes up diamonds and puts them in his oatmeal for breakfast.  If I had that kind of disposable income I'd definitely be a heroin addict with multiple std's from banging super hot hookers and living on a giant yacht, not buying a system to play Ratchet and Clank games.  Congrats to that guy for obviously being successful in life, but I bet he doesn't get any enjoyment out of anything.  Me, I've been poor as hell before, I get pleasure out of wiping my ass with quilted toilet paper.

People dont cease to amaze me... Just when you think people couldnt become and stupider, they spend 5grand on a console gaming system.

5 grand on a console that sells for 700bucks. Consoles are limited, the games that will come out for ps3 will no doubt be avaiilible on pc as well, and even if they are not, pc games are and will always remain higher quality then console. THeres no sense in spending money oon anyhting besides a top of the line pc.

And even if you did really want a ps3.. waiting 2 or 3 months for a preorder is still much better then dropping 3-10k, i wish i knew the person who paid for that console, so i could call him/her a blithering idiot to his/her face.

When you have more money than god, shelling out 10k for a game console is the same as you and me shelling out 10 cents for some candy. Calling someone stupid for that is itself kinda stupid, value is entirely relative and time is money.

Want to try counting how many millions of dollars celebrities spend annually on cars they never drive, houses with so many rooms they never even visit all of them, diamond encrusted items, what ever. Then tell me that's not stupid.

True, and so very very sad, since all that money could be put to use to feed the hungry and help the poor. But most people think charity is a form of treachery. You give someone something for free, he just comes back for more. So sad.

Well, I dunno; there are already more people on this earth than it can sustain, and in many third world countries the number of children is a measure of status, so even at the risk of sounding heartless I would state that giving any aid whatsoever before ensuring that their environment can sustain them is counter-productive. Otherwise you just turn one death into many while burning up all natural resources. In that sense, even bling is better than dumb charity.

Well actually the bread basket of America can produce enough food to feed the entire world.  But if we did produce that much it would drive the value of those items into the ground and no farmers could make a living.   The government actually pays farmers to leave wheat, corn and other items rotting in Silos, instead of flooding the market and lowering the price of these items.

Could it still feed everyone after the populations of third world countries have increased by, say, a factor of 100? Starvation and disease are nature's population control mechanisms; I doubt we could survive just removing them.

I forget the exact number I read, but it was somewhere close to 100 billion people that could be sustained by the US if we produced all the food we could produce.

Well if the person who purchased the PS3 is quite wealthy, why does that make him an idiot? If some of you would use your brains once in a while, you should realize that the people may have enough money to afford one or two of those at will.

The sad thing is its not Wealthy people who are buying them.  Wealthy people didn't get to be wealthy people by making such stupid decisions with their money.  More likely its someone like that lady from NJ who won the Lottery twice for a few million dollars each time and went bankrupt twice.   People who are rich and built their wealth up don't over spend on an item like this.

Comparing buying a PS3 to buying an expensive car that you might not drive isn't a fair comparison.  Yes a rich person might go out and buy a Ferrari that they barely ever drive, but they didn't pay 5-10x the MSRP for that car.

To the person who bought the PS3 for $3,850.

Basically, paying 4k for a console system >> 24-72 hours out in the cold to buy the console.
    Some people convenience >>> money

The person didn't get ripped off, they basically purchased a PS3, hassle-free, it's just a huge mark up.

The stupid person is the one who pays best buy $40 to install RAM.

Not waiting the like 2-3 months to get one for Normal price is stupidity.  Your 4-10k PS3 wont be any better then someone who gets it for Retail after christmas.

It's called convenience. People pay a lot for that (ie. Liquor stores). They also pay a lot to have something before everyone else.

I never said it was a good idea to buy it, but obviously if someone does have a lot of money, there is no harm in buying an extremely overpriced PS3.. especially when it is convenient and before everyone else

Yeah, the sad thing is that its not people that can afford it who are buying them.

They did a study when one of the previous game systems came out to see who were paying these extreme prices for them.  It ended up mainly being lower middle class people who were going into extreme debt to get one.

Most rich people if they really wanted to get one would be able to find the connections to get one direct from Sony.  They aren't going to go to Ebay and buy them.

Could you link the article please, it might be interesting. This is all a bit off-topic anyway so I won't go on about it, except to say that according to most sources feeding that sort of population would take some extreme sacrifices.

More proof that consule players are stupid.

Pc will always be superior than any consule in quality and price.

I dont have a link to the article, as it was something we talked about in my pyschology class about 4 years ago.  :(

I remember the teacher saying that the food we would be sending them wouldnt be what americans are used to eating, but it would be a bread type product that would be good enough for most third world countries.

Nah, most wealthy people just inherited their millions from those who actually "built" them. That said, you gotta realise that much of the time wealth is not even "built", it tends to be the result of luck, scheming or just good looks. While I can't talk about every rich person on earth, what I can still say is that lots of them are doing exactly what I suggested, spreading their money around without any restraint whatsoever. And I will say that it was a valid comparison about the car, because while one super luxury car might not cost that much more than another, it can still cost 1000 times more than a normal car, and it's still not necessarily much better. I mean, if you consider sports cars for example, why would you need one? You still can't drive any faster than that old lady with her ancient Ford, because there are these things called speed limits. Well, at least where I live. So what's the use?

I think what he meant was that it would be _americans_ eating something they are not used to in order to make it possible, since the only way to do it is to stop growing livestock. :-) And that's probably the easiest part. Remember that in the future most fuel will be made from grain, so feeding the third world might mean moving into donkey cart based transportation, while devoting much of our GDP into transporting grain and making sure it reaches the poor...

While I can't talk about every rich person on earth, what I can say is that a LOT of entertainers are doing exactly what I suggested, spreading their money around without any restraint whatsoever. And I will say that it was a valid comparison about the car, because while one super luxury car might not cost that much more than another, it can still cost 1000 times more than a normal car, and it's still not necessarily much better. Yeah,  but I would say entertainers aren't a good example of smart people when it comes to money.  How many sport stars or entertainers have any money left when they retire.  You hear all the time about them being broke.

I would still say though that its not fair to compare spending 50K-100K on a car compared to buying a PS3.  Because there are shortages on a lot of those cars too, but the Stars will order them ahead of time buy them for MSRP or lower and then get it when it comes in.  These people who are buying the PS3s aren't rich people who can't wait for an item.  Most of them are addicts who got caught up in the hype (or people trying to compete with the "jones")  most wealthy people don't need to worry about that.  My Aunt is a Executive VP for JPMorgan Chase,  she lived in the same neighborhood as Nick Carter's parents in Apollo Beach Fl (Neighborhood is called Symphony Isles), the people living their were rich (extrememely rich in most cases), but they weren't stupid with their money.   Most of the cars in that neighborhood were in the 30K-50K range in value.  Even though most of the houses were in the 1M-10M range in value.

I remember when I was a Deptartment Supervisor at the Clearwater FL Best Buy.  We had rich people come in to buy stuff all of the time, but they always were looking for a sale or to get a deal.  Hulk Hogan shopped there a lot, he bought a whole new entertainment system and we installed it in his house, but he haggled and got a deal since he was buying so much stuff at once.  Mike Alstott (full back for the Tampa Bay Bucs) came in and his wife freaked out cuz she wanted a new phone cuz hers broke when she dropped it into their pool (that was actually pretty funny cuz we had to throw her and Mike Alstott out of the store because she was making a scene) they could of afforded to buy a million new phones but didnt want to spend the money when she felt like she should get it for free. (she thought her service plan covered everything).

Just some examples from my personal knowledge.  I still stand by the statement that the vast majority of the people spending this kind of cash on a PS3 really can't afford it.  :(

Come to think of it, I can't think of many rich people who aren't entertainers or sport stars. image

But how do you know? These are individual cases, and we don't know who the buyers are. My guess is they are either entertainers or sport stars. Or if they aren't, I guess evolution is just following its course again. No harm in that. image I often think that a society that attempts to protect people from their own mistakes is acting as an evolutionary force against intelligence anyway...
