This is a little off the thread but I just cant imagine in my wildest dreams to be able to die in a MMO and not lose ur items ever....lol...I mean....I never played such a game and I cant imagine who would. If that was the case couldnt you just carry all ur most powerful and richest items with you at all times??
Originally posted by TaskyZZ You know, there is an easy solution to this. Let people choose to be monsters. Have it so when you login, you can hit the "I want to be a monster" button. Then you get to be the very next mkonster that spawns. So, you could randomly be the next 5th level gnoll or 40th level cyclops that spawns. You can attack the nearest character you see, or you could attempt to run to the nearest town and cause mass maounts of havoc. I have wondered why this was not put into any games. I think it could be a lot of fun. I can imagine 4 or 5 humans spawning in as gnolls in BlackBurrow in EQ. They gather, get organized and put an ass whoopin' to all the players inside. Would have made for great fun!
It was the case on some PvP server in EQ for sometimes...
They remove the option after sometimes, after many weird reports of skeletons gaining 4 levels and farming noobs and the like.

PvP is the most talked about and controversial topic on this site. I cant understand why most of the games coming out are no pvp or seperate server pvp....
Players who want full PvP are a very small minority, they just happen to be the most outspoken.
The developers know this. Paying players have proven this with their actions many times over. Look at how well ShadowBane is doing (Poorly, for those that don't know).
EQ had 14 servers while I was playing (2 or 3 years ago). Two of them had PvP. Rallos Zek had an average population size, the race war server had a low population size. I guess the PvP servers had about 10% the population total that the "carebear" servers had.
People speak with their money, the developers usually listen.
You PvP'rs contstantly bad mouth ShadowBane, but the problem is, by not supporting it, you are not showing other developers that Full on PvP can work. If all of the Full On PvP'rs joined ShadowBane (like it or not) and you got the population count nice and high, other developers would say "Wow, ShadowBane is full on PvP. Look how well it is doing. Lets make full on PvP in our game". But as it is now, they say, "HAHAHA, look at ShadowBane. Full on PvP. What a joke. We are not going to make that mistake."
Great thread, although it's Kriminal99's thread Reloaded Number of issues to address:
I'm more of a PvE player than a PvP player, these days. For me the attraction is exploring game content, challenging myself in difficult zones to learn my class better and improve my group skills, not to mention that I believe in Risk vs Reward.
Why PvE? Does it get boring after a while? I'm a social player, I like meeting new people, grouping with them towards a shared goal. The unpredictibility stems from zones where if you screw up one inch then you're looking at a nasty CR. Or where Karma catches up with you and deals you a bum hand with the mother of all shitty groups.
One of the main reasons I tend not to PvP is because very few games have implemented it well. Instead, the rule of the day is EQ style PvP which is a PvE game with a tacked on half-assed PvP system. I prefer PvP that has been built into the design of the game from the get go i.e. DAoC or Eve, and has a real purpose.
In Eve, PvP is an essential part of the Risk vs Reward system because the dynamism is provided through players being able to control vast swathes of territory in low sec(curity) systems. In Empire controlled space, law enforcement agencies ensure that system law is adhered to via the threat of recycling your ship. The further you travel from Empire controlled space, the less patrols you run into. In low sec or 0.0 space, it's law of the Jungle; that frontier spirit where you can claim your stake in the world. Make your fortune in the New World and subsequently lose it, to regain it at the end. Or .. maybe your frozen corpse will wander inter-steller space at the hands of some enemy, in a deep, cold remote region of space.
JAttractive, I was thoroughly entertained by your PvP attitude and your reasoning. When I used to play PvP MUDS (GodWars), I had almost the exact same attitude. PvP was a complete and utter rush and some of my best gaming moments have come from the constant fear of being bum rushed by half the MUD because I became a little too proficient at my task
To paraphrase a strip from MegaTokyo:
I have been away too long. My enemies must learn anew the meaning of ph33r ..
PvE? PvP? Doesn't matter to me except: (1) the game setting and (2) how well ingame mechanics which includes Pve and PvP have been implemented. I wouldn't touch EQ PvP with a ten-foot stick.

I think that pretty much sums it up. Don't tack on crappy PvP systems to PvE games and don't give in to carebears if your game is suppose to be PvP (ie. UO).

For me. I don't see the whole point in PvE. You lvl your char to just fight creatures over and over? Go through the storyline over and over?
"I just killed the lvl70 super demon dragon!" ... ok cool, but its a simple computer AI creater.
What I like about PvP is that you go up against another human to see how good your character really is. my 2 cents.
The world is mine cause I'm in it

I dont know how all of you thik but i like PvP ))
