A carebear is a name given to someone by someone who has no clue what the word Game means.
A game is a recreational activity involving one or more players. This can be defined by A) a goal that the players try to reach, some set of rules that determines what the players can or can not do. Games are played primarily for entertainment or enjoyment, but may also serve an educational or simulational role.
Merc all the way. A lot of people wonder why I say my "team" rather than guild. When we started, no one said guild, online gaming teams were called clans. That word in reference to a gaming team originated with mechwarrior, but refers to specific kind of team, as far as lore goes.
In mechwarrior circles we refer to the team as "the unit"... another term that in the context of mechwarrior makes sense to people and generally implies mercenary. Of course, if I posted on MMO forums talking about my unit all the time, people might get the wrong idea.
If you played much online post Mech2, you might have seen us around, Death Dealer Mercenaries (DDM). We spent most of our time in Battlezone, but also had stints in a few other leagues.

Hey man...did you guys run in a league during the KALI NetMech days? I distinctly remember a clan call DDM. I ran a clan by the name of The White Rhino Horde (WRH). I am trying to remember the league...it was a damn good league, ran by a guy by the name of Paul (something or other). We moved on to Tribes and played competitively for about 3 years.
PvP in an RPG game can never really be called skill based combat because just like the 2nd poster said, it's all about stats and gear and which class can beat what. IF you want real skill based combat they go play CS or Halo2 when everyone is equal and it's the player skill that counts. In a RPG a player that is higher level and/or with better gear can almost always win against a player that has lesser level and gear 9 out of 10 times.
As far as I remember Carebears actively engaged in fighting using various techniques, and never actually lost. So the entire term is wrong from the begining.
I cant wait for Darkfall to be released, and I pray to god that it does, because some serious enjoyment is going to come from that game, and im not even going to be playing it. Im just waiting for the posts about how shit it is, because 90% of the Hardcore morons who think anything less than losing all your items, possesions, characters, your PC, real life money, house and family is "Carebear"
Darkfall will cater around 10% of these people, because the other 90% will be getting their asses handed to them by people who are equally or better skilled than them AND have invested more time in the game. The entire "hardcore" population cant be number 1, which leaves the rest of them to perform a cannon fodder service.
There will be cries the game isnt hardcore enough, and something about physics flaws, making the game unplayable, at which point they will wait for tne next hardcore PvP game so they can PvE themselves up fast to decent gear and hope to be number 1.
Even better, i cant wait for the crying ill be able to read on their forums, when "l337gankz0r12" who has been Killing people for a month and amassing a large personal wealth gets his ass handed to him by a couple of players who team up to take him down, at which point he loses everything he owned, and suddenly realises he's down to nothing again, and due to his reputation nobody will help him back on his peddelstall.
The great thing about hardcore PvP'ers is the Irony they provide, its an unprecedented level of hypocrisy, especially this one there the guy states "A carebear spends his time trashtalking on the forums and not fighting" on which note I would like to thank him for the trash talking post he has made on these forums.

A carebear does not prefer that player skill determines the outcome of battles. This is where you are most wrong. The term PvP is exclusive to RPGs. In RPGs combat effectiveness is governed by level, attributes and gear more than player skill. games where player skill is the most important factor are call their PvP "multiplayer". If you want player skill to determine the outcome of events, you are playing the wrong type of game. I would suggest the battlefield series. ________________________________________________________________________ Amen to that! hehe I always laugh when some LEETIST tries to say he has more skill, thats a joke... he usually just has more friends, equipment, or lvls, etc. Nice post Salv.
Oh yeah, and are you a clanner or Merc? Merc here hehe...
Again amen to that!! I play Day of Defeat almost ever day. I love PVP played counter strrike for years and loved Halo. What I don't like about PVP in MMOG's is it's usually just an excuse for those with a lot of money to pay to trick out their characters so that they have a huge advantage and then go out picking on other people so they can feel good about themselves. It's a kin to those tpe of people who use some type of hack in a first person shooter to get an advantage and then brag about how good they are.
I say we line up all the carebears and fire a couple shotgun rounds into their thick skulls and watch their heads explode into a million tiny fragments of blood and gore.
I really, really hope darkfall is successful. I would love for the hardcore PvP players to have a place they could all hang out together, rather than sitting around complaining that existing games don't have open PvP or corpse looting.
I think they are in for a bit of a shock.... when there are no carebears in the game with them... who will they gank? Oh yeah, each other.... What goes around comes around. I think some hardcore leet 12 year olds are in for a rude awakening when they don't have PvE players to kick around and make themselves feel somehow superior.
Well problem is that who a "carebear" varies depending on who is doing the name calling.
Those hardcore pvp types who want full-blown gank or be ganked player killing 24/7 anywhere anytime will call anyone a carebear who doesn't want to pvp every single moment they are logged in.
If a pvper "pwns" someone and then makes an A** of himself about it, people will call the other guy a carebear if he complains to the pwners guild.
To me, carebear is a derogatory word. Like "noob" is different than "newbie", the former being an insult while the latter simply meaning he/she is new to the game. Most of the time it is the hardcore pvp players that use it to describe someone who (1) doesn't pvp much if at all (2) isn't very good at pvp and/or (3) wants restrictions or pking penalties.
Following the OP's list:
A "carebear" may not rather fight PvE may just prefer it over whatever pvp system is in place, WoW has many PvE servers, they can't be all carebears can they?
I don't think a carebear is someone who doesn't like to lose, I mean come on who enjoys losing?
A carebear isn't someone who wants to have no penalties if *they* lose, they usually want penalites for the ganker who can't stop killing the newbies.
It's not the carebear that thinks they are better player for the time investment it's usually the hardcore raider types. Some of them pvp a lot too and definately act elitist.
Sad part is that pvp gets a bad rap from the small percentage that enjoys ganking/griefing. Since the "carebear" as it were doesn't pvp much (if at all) it is understandable how they may lump all pvpers together with the griefer.
I think the carebears as it were, would actually prefer player skill come into play in battles. That way they wouldn't have to raid/grind for the Sword of Supreme Uberness.
The way I see it is, A carebear would be someone who feels the social aspect of a game is more important then the PvP aspect of a game, someone who is just as likely to befriend the opposition as their own side. Whether it is for their own gain or they just don't see the point of the fight.
Example of when I call someone a Carebear: When I am out World PvPing with one or two people just looking for some opposition to mess with, find a few people on another side who need their butt kicked, and one of the people on my side with me just sit there and says I am not helping because I talk to them all the time on vent and they are really nice, so it wouldn't be nice if we atk them.
To me that is my definition of a Carebear, for me if you are on a PvP server and you see opposition, even if they are your friends you atk them. You can be friendly later with them, and if they can't be friendly with you after you atked them on a pvp server well then, some people just can't grasp the idea of a game and a little fun.

Soooooo... you're saying, that if someone won't PK a friend or acquaintance at your suggestion, you think negatively of them? I can't believe you are honestly arguing that point. I guess you could be posting in jest, to poke fun at the ultra hardcore PvP dudes... if so, touch
Originally posted by Faur What exactly is the purpose of this thread?
I have nothing against people who are against pvp. What does irk me are people who are out to prove how 'hardk0re' they are by calling anyone who doesn't want to fight them, a carebear. Just because you're awesome at pvp on the internet doesn't make you a bigger and more manly person.
A level 1 who runs when a level 50 attacks him isn't a carebear, but is practicing common sense. For the high level player to call him a carebear is just an attempt to "still win".
Two players ganging up on another aren't carebears, but are practicing basic tactics. For the losing player to call them carebears is just a cop-out in order to try and nullify his loss.
I much prefer pvp mmo's myself, and I've found that those who cry carebear are usually scrubs who can't accept that others don't want to play by their rules. I was a carebear in GW for using pin down+poison+bleed, I was a carebear in Eve for using target jammers and warp scramblers, I was a carebear in Lineage 2 for using stun, I was a carebear in shadowbane for tracking down and revealing assassins, I was a carebear in Ryzom for using armor piercing actions against heavy armored players, I was a carebear in CoX for playing CoX.

This accurately describes the group of people on this board who call themselves 'hardcore' PVPers, since they're primarily forum warriors who mostly complain that there's not a 'real' PVP game for them to play.

The whole "carebear" thing really stings with some people. It's like busting out that other "C" word- in front of a woman...
All I gotta say is- truth hurts. I was there- I saw what they did to UO. No MMORPG has held my interest for more than a few months ever since MMO "went that way." No better term to use than "carebear."
Don't worry- it's all gonna change. Just as "Doom" and it's clones stole the show from the RPG orcs and dorks titles that practically built PC gaming- so too will PvP rise up and steal MMO right out from under RPG.
Real gamers don't want to play a computer. They want to play other gamers. It's in our nature. Even something as ancient as a game of Chess is an example of this universal and unaging human theme: Conflict... or "PvP."
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

WRONG, sir, WRONG, under subsection q-8 it states that it will NOT.
