That's what I like about about chess... How one of the player's pieces are more skilled than the other guy's. My Queen is at level 50, so I can lay the smack down on noobs all day. I have my bishop all twinked out, with some raid loot I passed down from my queen. I have to suicide him every time he gets close to leveling, but hey... it's worth it to keep that advantage.
I guess my second favorite part about chess is how I get to loot the lamer's corpse after I pwn his ass.... Those wussy carebears ruin everything. They should just go play Deep Blue if they want a game with no challenge.
/sarcasm
On a serious note... You mention that MMOs are going to change. Unfortunately for you they already have. I hope you enjoy darkfall, because it is the most promising looking gankfest coming out any time soon. I won't have time for it.. I'll probably be busy with Vanguard, Age of Conan and Lord of the Rings Online.... the times they are a changin'.

"Carebear" is a nice warning flag, using the term is equivalent to saying "I am an idiot and it's not worth paying attention to what I've said except to mock it." That's especially true when you call someone a carebear for wanting a game in which players spend most of their time PVPing instead of some lame PVE grind game like EVE where losing a fight means PVE grinding.
All I gotta say is- truth hurts. I was there- I saw what they did to UO. No MMORPG has held my interest for more than a few months ever since MMO "went that way." No better term to use than "carebear."
Except... what exactly did UO change? The big change was that they gave people who weren't interested in FFA PVP a place to go where they were not required to participate in it. No one took away the PVP areas, you could still go off and get real PVP competition in the original areas. All that they took away was the opportunity to gank people not interested in PVP for whatever reason. The fact that you 'hardcores' complain so bitterly about UO letting your gank targets leave says quite a lot about what you really want in a game.
Real gamers don't want to play a computer. They want to play other gamers.
Then why whine about UO changing? All it did was provide a place for the 'unreal gamers' to go do stuff and be out of your way, if you really want to challenge other players then you should be grateful that they made the game so you don't have to waste your time on wimps who won't put up a challenge and just want to play a computer.
Carebear are not a pvp vs non pvp thing, it's a state of mind. There are carebear pvpers and there are non carebear pveers.
A carebear is someone who when he finds an aspect of the game to be to hard for him will try to get the aspect in question changed to fit him instead of trying to adapt and learn how to to overcome it. It is someone who wants everything served on a silver platter.

OK, so you're saying that the crowd that wants games to be FFA PVP everywhere with no consequences for attacking someone are carebears then? Because it sounds to me like they find beating players interested in PVP instead of ganking newbies and players doing non-PVP stuff too hard and want to change the game to make it easier. Basically, that the people who call themselves 'hardcore PVPers' are the biggest carebears of all?
It sounds like you're also saying that most of the people who get called 'carebears' aren't really carebears, since very few people object to full-loot PVP because of the difficulty, but because they find PVE grinding to replace stuff incredibly boring.
Why does anyone even care about this issue? Really. Is it even neccessary to point fingers and call others such utterly useless names? As far as I know, no one is a "carebear" OR a "hardcore" PvPer (whatever those terms describe...all I can imagine is a cartoon bear from the 80's and someone who likes really rough nookie). They're all the same people with different styles of playing. Just because you don't like it gives you no right to suddenly slap a label in their face. And this for everyone, not just one side or the other, though in reality there are no "black and white" sides everyone is pretty much on the same side complaining about one thing or another in the end.
On a lighter note, wouldn't it be hilarious to have a perma death, high penalty PvP game in which every character is forced into the form of the actual cartoon characters from the Carebear series? And when you get hit your character squeaks things like "I love you!" "Hug me!" "I think I just had an aneurism!" "You hit my lovey spot!"
I am having a hard time understanding why people are upset at the OP. He is not saying YOU are a carebear. He is saying that people that exhibit those traits are Carebears. I agree that people that exhibit the traits laid out in the original post are definetly Carebears.
All those people who are describing themselves to be a carebear yet at the same time are saying they like to PVP. I really think you are missing the intent of the word. Somehow I dont see the little blue/pink/yellow bears running around killing people for fun, under any circumstances. Its obvious you need to take another look at your self given name.
That would be like calling yourself a PVEer, but your dont like to PVE. Or calling yourself a griefer but say you dont grief. If you dont like the traits of that particular name, maybe you shouldnt call yourself that in the first place?
What is with all these people wanna be Carebears anyway? Carebear is a deragatory term in MMO's, actually naming yourself that when you dont even fit the description is just idiotic?
I haven't bothered to even read any of the replies knowing that most of it is pure anger from people who got their feelings hurt over one guys opinion. But I'm gonna go ahead and pick out some random statement that I will effectively argue.
"This is where you are most wrong. The term PvP is exclusive to RPGs. PvP is not exclusive to RPGs. It's exclusive to MMOGs. A MMOG doesn't necessarily have to be an RPG, it could be an FPS or an RTS. Levels are only featured in the standard mainstream formula MMOGs, which I don't play. The term carebear is much broader than what you percieve to only be constrained in the popular MMORPG culture. It is possible for skill to determine the outcome of battles in MMOGs (See Darkfall). There would be slight nuances in the balance of competition due to gear and stats, though I believe they add a new dimension to the game that enhances the degree of immersion. Carebears just prefer mainstream MMORPGs for their lack of any difficulty over more underground or niche MMOGs that have more depth.
I'm also thinking that the OP got verbally asaulted by a "carebear" in his game of choice so he decided to take it out on us. Or try to rally support, I dunno.

Ok, a care bear is a player that knows a game IS a game and plays it to have fun in a way that allows others to have fun also. Anyone that believes that Care Bears can not fight has no clue. Care Bears will, fight and typically win, but only when they have to this again is because they understand that they are part of a gaming community. As part of the community they strive to make the game enjoyable for all. A Care Bears mantra is, well to quote Kirk Yes we are all capable of killing but the difference is that we tell ourselves.. We will not kill today, We will not kill today.
The other side of the fence is the Griefer Bears They know they are part of a community but they spend every moment plotting, planning and trying to suck the fun out of the game and make everyone else playtime miserable. They only care about themselves never once thinking about the community except as being there for their own personal amusement.
Whats a Care Bear, they are the givers you find in any game be it the guy helping the noob out in a BF24 match to the gal taking the time to explain to a noob how to setup a Cruiser in EVE.
The Griefer Bears entire existence is whats in it for me
So which type of Bear are you? I am know as one of the biggest Care Bears around but if you ask my corp you do not want to go head to head on any FPS/Mech game and I have been know to chase down battle cruisers in my indy and mining barges. If you want to test something in any game and need someone to help for a few hours, Im there.

No, carebars are the folks that ruined UO- and have continued to dominate the MMO genre for the past 7 years. 7 years doesn't amount to shit. They are a minority and a mere fad in the market, and they are going to pass when many console and offline PC gamers enter the MMO market as better technology becomes cheaper; and MMO becomes more attractive to advertisers and marketing companies. Their days ARE numbered.
Except... what exactly did UO change?
The segregation of the community for one. The segregation than brought about a stark change in gameplay on both of the new resulting "halves" of the game. It WAS half the game it used to be.

I love how people like to down play the potential of PvP because of some other developers' poorly thought out game mechanics; and their inability to to think for themselves.

I say this because UO was is the best MMO out there to this day... but even before it became corrupted by the carebears; the game mechanics and griefing loopholes were downright awful, shitty. Most delicious shit sandwich I've ever had though. And I know there is so much room for improvement on the UO model.

I have a signature just for you stupid "hardcore" players, and YOUR days are the one numbered!
HARD CORE are raiders
HARD CORE smack talk
HARD CORE talk like a game is the most important thing
HARDCORE numbers as players are puny, or WoW wouldn't have 8+ million players, UO had CRAP for player numbers as did EQ.
If you have any questions please ask. I have moved on to WoW from eq and no longer have any desire to play a dead game. Thank you. (posted by another selling his account in EQ1)

I say this because UO was is the best MMO out there to this day... but even before it became corrupted by the carebears; the game mechanics and griefing loopholes were downright awful, shitty. Most delicious shit sandwich I've ever had though. And I know there is so much room for improvement on the UO model.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.
Do you have a newsletter I can subscribe to? That word salad is just great.
