Not knowing whats going to happen or where the road leads is what draws me to adventure RPGs. The only time the game will feel that way is when it starts. Before the community starts to destroy the mystery.
So you plan on playing so much that you will always be in the front where the mystery is? You shouldn't read the forums then until you experience the game for yourself. Because chances are, there is someone with 40 hours a week that will be playing and writing "How to's" within the first week. We have all seen it done before. I am just trying to be helpfull, I am not riding on you at all. Just don't read the forums, because people that aren't like you will be asking where to go, how to complete this or that and etc.
Unless I am forced into it by girlfriend or friends I plan to pass this one by completely. Not a fan of McQuaid or his games, just personal preference.
I will be playing from the begining; there will be problems (just like in any MMO) but I think it will be better for me to go from the start. I will get to go through the good time and the bad times alike; this will also make me one of the oldtimers on the server. I played AC1 from the begining and I was one of the oldtimers in my guild (that gained me a lot of respect in the later times of the game). Oh well Ill just wait for the game and then we will see; see yall there.
For me it will depend on how the game is sent to market after OB. True, there is usually a fair amount of patching as soon as a game goes to retail but the last couple days of OB usually give you an idea of whether a game is going to give you headaches playing during the first 3 months. Also, OB give a good idea as to whether the game is 'for' you. When I beta (open or closed) I take the 'bug hunt' seriously and play it to 'test' but always maintain an air of 'try before you buy' as well.
5 years in development and what do they have? They have a huge sandbox for people to grind in thats all there is to it. There is nothing new in this game NOTHING. The game is all about grinding whatever and what the hell for? There is no big story behind it all no theme. Not going to waste my time and money on a new machine just to grind in this pointless garbage.
Good luck to you all diehard fanbois out there praising Brads VISION. The neverending game he wants to make. Well prepare for a shock so you don't throw yourselves off a cliff when you finally get what you have been waiting for so long.
I will get my fix from games like Oblivion for now and return to the MMO world when there's actually a worth-while game to try with something new to offer and that will be around Q2 2007 when Age of Conan releases.
I plan on going into it at launch with my guild friends. I'll be ordering the collector's version, but I'm going into this with my eyes open. And if it turns out to be not what I want, than alas, money spent but at least I've had the experience.
Seems like a great game. Too bad it takes 3x longer and 5x harder to accomplish something. Maybe WoW has tainted me from the Everquest days, or maybe it's because I can't dedicate my life to a MMORPG. Either way it seems like a huge timesink, even worse than EQ was in 99.
Any game that causes me to curse this often is not worth playing. Taking 10 hours nonstop and seeing your bar move an inch is jut not fun for me anymore.
I am one that got bored with WoW... and now seek something new. Like so many, I've been waiting for a new game to enjoy and was excited about VG... until reading what some (apparently beta-testers) had commented on. I was not excited about EQ1/2... maybe I am just hard to please, but I do hope, that the SOE team has new and refreshing ideas vs. the old EQ days. Being one of the older (in age) 'gamers' and retired I have 3-4 hours everyday to sit at the computer and swing a sword at the bad guys. But let it be 3-4 hours of new fun... not a clone of old memories. In the mean time... what else is there to do?
Pre-ordered the limited edition first day i was able.
Zerker and Inquisitor's have not officially been stuck to the first expansion to my knowledge. Putting forth a widely accepted oppinion they will be added in one of the major patches.

Totally couldn't be farther from the truth. Vanguard is quest based. Tons of stuff to do and all about stories. Being totally clueless FTW!

SoE is only printing the boxes, shipping to stores and providing servers and tech support. All of the fresh ideas are from Sigil!

Well if Vanguard is quest based, then I won't be buying this. I hated WoW because it was quest based. Quest based games make it to where you get the best items from quests as opposed to just grinding off mobs. Quests based games also give more xp to quest grinders. I put up WoW and EQ2 as my proof.
I was hoping for a game that was like DAoC when it first came out. A long grind to where people grouped to get xp faster. You grinded on mobs in the world, not quests. There were few quests, but they were of Epic quality. Gear dropped off mobs, but was of lower quality than merchants gear, and player crafted was the best. If Vanguard is quest based, than this game will definitely suck. And to think that I was going to start playing it next month hopefully.
Guess not every game can please everyone but after reading the article about quests and other attributes about VG I am again looking forward to trying it. I for one enjoyed the WoW quests... though I do tend to be a loner or group with two or three vs. a group of 20. Having maxed out a few lv 60 characters, I got bored and look forward to what VG will offer. Re: Oblivion... The Elder Scrolls. Fun game but without the interaction of real people in the real world... was simply a game to pass the time away.
That is my ultimate problem with quests...they just simply attract loners and I am not a loner. When you have quest based content, people tend to solo more because people aren't always on the same quest. There are pick up groups, but over time those dwindle down, because pick up groups are low quality. With games where you go out and grind on static spawns, anyone within a certain level range can group up because you are just grinding on mobs. Grinding with quests requires people to have the same quests. Aside from that point, how can killing X amount of Y for 10 items or take this very important letter to this guy be that interesting? WoW is flooded with mind numbing quests like those. The only decent ones are the class specific and the instance quests. I am big on community. How can you promote community and soloing in the same breath. Most people are advancement minded; meaning that their primary goal is advancement, whether it be at a slow pace or fast pace depends on the person. So how do you get a bunch of people that are on seperate quests to form bonds amongst each other such as those that were built in games with grinding static spawns?
I am not arguing with anyone here, I am just trying to understand where the sense of community went that we had in the old days. I want to see where quests became fun at the expense of a tight knit community. Where is the next game that will promote community relationships, instead of soloing with other people like WoW? Seems like I am being pushed towards games like Darkfall, because those are the social and community games. To bad games like that are full of gankers and griefers.

Again... a matter of preferance. Though I enjoy the relationship of a few friends along for a quest, be it combined or simply assisting someone's needs, if major foraging for those high end items are at stake... then one who belongs to a team oriented GUILD is not without hope and support. You just cannot count on all your guildmates being there all the time... and that is when I prefer some quality time hunting alone or with a select few. This hunter will certainly seek a huntress to team up with when the game begins

You get XP from Quests and from killing MOB's in the Adventuring Sphere. Infact, you could kill-grind your way up levels if you chose, and it would take about the same time as doing quests, it just wouldn't be as fun IMO, plus there would be far fewer rewards (although MOB's to drop them).
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

1) Not a Fanboi, I just don't like when people make up things they obviously don't know about.
2) If you hadn't made up facts, others wouldn't have to point it out.
But I'll enlighten you:
The Storylines in Vanguard are not only incredibly deep, vary from Race to Race, and vary from Class to Class, they are also inter-woven into Diplomacy Missions & effect Factions. Even the God you choose will effect the Storyline. Cities are at war with eachother, various cults fight for control, Assasins attack npc's and control of an area may depend on the choices you & your Guild make. The story evolves while you are in it.
This game has taken Storylines to a new level in MMO's. The only games that will even be close will be AoC & Fallen Earth, and that's if they can pull them off...

Simple answer...
I'll be the first in line for the game!
