Guildwars Nightfall Wins MMORPG of 2006 from Gamespy

Copyed from Game Spys Website, "Most People will see this on the main page of the Guildwars Website"

PC MMORPG of the Year -- Guild Wars Nightfall

This year found the Guild Wars expansion-machine in full swing, with two standalone campaigns released six months apart: Factions and Nightfall. While we were very much into Factions, Nightfall edged it out in our minds. Its North African-inspired setting was extremely cool, and the two new professions introduced -- the vicious Dervish and the stalwart Paragon -- were just too cool for words.

In broader terms, Guild Wars is extremely close to being our favorite MMO ever due to its enlightened approach to the genre. The attention that ArenaNet pays to the game's PvP experience would be embraced by the industry at large in a perfect world, and its ability to offer such a stellar product without charging a monthly subscription is nothing short of revolutionary. If subsequent expansions reflect the level of quality we saw in Factions and Nightfall, then ArenaNet's model will be viable indeed.

Factions brought persistent PvP objectives to the game world, and Nightfall considerably upped the Guild Wars universe's narrative cache. Your guess is as good as ours as to where the next campaign will go, but make no mistake, we're very excited to find out.

Amazing huh, even though Guildwars Nightfall is only a MMOG it still gets MMORPG of the year from gamespy.

Glad to hear this - Factions added some great new PVP content and Nightfall is one of the best rpg campaigns I've ever played.

Im very interested in trying this game out.

Good to see it won a award.

  • KillerJimmyKillerJimmy Member Posts: 216

The award is probably only given to games that are released the same year. I could be wrong, but if not GW: Nightfall would beat anything released this year hands down. As we've all been saying: 2006 was a pathetic year for MMOs, to the point that a GW release would be the only MMO released that would look like a professional company developed it!

This post isn't in any way meant to lessen the quality of GW. I just think everyone would fall out of their chair laughing if Archlord had won any award. lol

I played Factions when it came out but never picked up Nightfall. I enjoyed the different look to all the classes that Factions gave. Does nightfall do along the same thing? What kind of fun new aspects are in Nightfall? Probably should put this in GW forum but any answers would be great.

It also mentions Elder Scrolls 3 : Oblivion in it as a runner up because it wasn't a MMO

for those that still dont believe , this is another small info on what guildwars will be in the future.
i see a solid huge comunity in a solid huge virtual game world.
the game is made so that it can folow technologie , not just in new game play , but also grafics engine , internet issues etc.
meaning guildwars will never get old , becose it folows time.
any other game like this ? i dont think so.

The award is for mmorpg:s released in 2006, meaning Nightfall/Faction. So lots of older mmorpg:s do not even qualify.

But then again the mmorpg:s released in 2006 where almost all, well lets say "lacking" (& some outright used illegal methods: "Dark & Light" & Horizons if you count older ones).

Glad to hear this and I hope they keep it up! I'll try any future games Anet develops but I hope they stick to the Guild Wars franchise as they said they would!

Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished

Laughing, because these awards are for games released in 2006, WoW was released 2004/2005 (for the rest of the world outside US).

Pretty dissapointing. Not that GW won, they deserve it hands down, but that gamespy can't even tell the diffrence between an mmorpg and an online game.
  • AkaraxleAkaraxle Member UncommonPosts: 471

I think GW deserves an award, but not certainly the MMORPG award as far as traditional MMORPGs go. But there probably wasn't any other choice, so *shrug*.

Anet offers freedom of choice of playstyle in their choice of games they have for play, SOE does not.  With SOE games you must grind and raid to experience their games in full. Anet offers games with and without the grind and or raids. iirc.

MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) is a genre of online computer role-playing games (RPG) in which a large number of players interact with one another in a virtual world. As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a fictional character (most commonly in a fantasy setting) and take control over many of that character's actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game.

A persistent world is a virtual world (often in a fantasy setting) that is used as a setting for a role-playing game, often online. The world is always available and world events happen continually.

The persistency comes from maintaining and developing the state of the gaming world around the clock. Unlike with other games, a persistent world game's plots and events continue to develop even while some of the players are not playing their character. The comparison is to the real world where events occur that are not directly connected to a person, or continue to happen while a person sleeps, etc. Likewise, a player's character can also influence and change a persistent world. The degree to which a character can affect a world varies from game to game. (Since the game does not pause nor create player-accessible back-up files, a character's actions will have consequences that the player must deal with.)

Persistent worlds do also exist in offline games, such as Animal Crossing (and its DS counterpart Wild World). Even though technically nothing happens while the game is off, the illusion of persistency is created by advancing events as soon as the game is turned on and using the GameCube's clock as a guide for what should have happened, making it seem like events occurred while the game was off.

The term gained popularity with the growth in popularity of MMORPGs. It's also the term (frequently abbreviated as "PW") used by players of Neverwinter Nights to refer to MMORPG-like online environments created using the game's toolkit. The original AOL MMORPG of Neverwinter Nights was the first graphical persistent world RPG.

    Were GW doest feet here?

ALL game websites, magazines, etc talk about GW as a MMORPG, just because this game tried a difrent way, we must be hold scholl and dont accept inovation? This is the future accept it.

PS. I can play with 3M players insted of  3k

Guild Wars is not set in one virtual world. Its divided in MULTIPLE diffrent worlds, because of its instanced gameplay. There is nothing massively about Guild Wars. The only reason Websites and magazines talk about GW as an MMORPG, is because, really, its the place where it fits best. There is no real "genre" for GW.

Inovation? I'm sorry to inform you, but GW is not inovation. In fact, what GW did was already done almost 7 years ago, its called Phantasy Star Online. The future? Not really. Of all mmorpg's currently under development, only SUN is going the same route as GW .(one of the reasons I'm looking forward to SUN)

You can't play with 3 million players instead of 3k.

First, assuming all of the people who bought GW still play, the correct sentence would be "I can play with 3 million diffrent players"

next, I seriously doubt all those 3 million people who bought the game are still actually playing the game.

In GW, I can meet and trade and fight and generally interact with all the players that are playing the game, be them 3M or 1M or whatever (still vastly superior to the average server capacity of MMORPGs). In other MMORPGs you simply cannot, because player load is divided in small chunks over dozens of servers. Thus, GW might be instanced but feels way more "socially massive".

I can do all those things in Diablo & Dungeon siege as well, does that make them MMORPG's now? The only thing you can do is chat (and perhaps trade) with all those people. you can not play with a massive amount of people at the same time.
  • WARCRYtmWARCRYtm Member Posts: 875

You can chat with other person from one server to another on Diablo or Dungeons Siege? No because each server is a difrent world(diablo have a limit of 8 players per server), and they are not presistent. In Diablo and DS servers are not conected like they are in GW.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistent_world

If NWN have MMORPG servers with 64 players max usualy 32, Guild Wars can have that, in city, and you have arenas with 24 players also.

Just see AO, DAoC(after DR) and CoX , you are in a city trading, socialising, etc, than you go out in a quest to level,  they are instanced, does that make them online rpgs insted of MMORPGs?They have a bigger world not instanced, but too me is just a matter of size.

In EVE most of the time i dont see no one, is a massive chat, but it is a mmorp, or because it have 500 shards it isnt?

In EQ2 wen you have to many people in a place, the server makes another zone of the original one Ex: Antonica2.  Same happens in GW, probably EQ2 isnt massive also, because it have limitations in the number of people in all zones. EVE also limit the amount of players per zone, you get in a qeue if that zone is full Ex: jita is full,  you are number 100 in qeue.

WoW in high end is all instanced, wen you start raiding or doing PvP you have nothing to do outside(no one cares about EP pvp and world bosses, instanced content (pve) is beter/more important), in the end GW and WoW are just the same.

Why no one says DDO isnt a MMORPG? It is all instanced, and it have 3k players servers, wen GW have all of  them in some way merged, so all comunity can be together.

Do i need to get more examples?
