Massive Multiplayer - yes, millions of players questing together online, groups, raids, etc.
Online - yes, online play is required
Role Playing Game - yes, I have seen people role playing in this game
They can call it a Giant Hot Dog for all I care. It is still an MMORPG and CORPG in my book. BTW, I think you can define any MMO as a CORPG if you look at the definition.
Cooperative Play - WoW, EQ, GW
Competative - Any MMO with PvP
WoW and EQ have instancing also, just not as much as GW.
LoL how true its all instancing exept of course in the chat rooms.

Really? last time I checked, you could only play with a few people at the same time.
MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) is a genre of onlinecomputer role-playing games (RPG) in which a large number of players interact with one another in a virtual world. As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a fictional character (most commonly in a fantasy setting) and take control over many of that character's actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game. A persistent world is a virtual world (often in a fantasy setting) that is used as a setting for a role-playinggame, often online. The world is always available and world events happen continually. The persistency comes from maintaining and developing the state of the gaming world around the clock. Unlike with other games, a persistent world game's plots and events continue to develop even while some of the players are not playing their character. The comparison is to the real world where events occur that are not directly connected to a person, or continue to happen while a person sleeps, etc. Likewise, a player's character can also influence and change a persistent world. The degree to which a character can affect a world varies from game to game. (Since the game does not pause nor create player-accessible back-up files, a character's actions will have consequences that the player must deal with.) Persistent worlds do also exist in offline games, such as Animal Crossing (and its DS counterpart Wild World). Even though technically nothing happens while the game is off, the illusion of persistency is created by advancing events as soon as the game is turned on and using the GameCube's clock as a guide for what should have happened, making it seem like events occurred while the game was off. The term gained popularity with the growth in popularity of MMORPGs. It's also the term (frequently abbreviated as "PW") used by players of Neverwinter Nights to refer to MMORPG-like online environments created using the game's toolkit. The original AOL MMORPG of Neverwinter Nights was the first graphical persistent world RPG. Were GW doest feet here? ALL game websites, magazines, etc talk about GW as a MMORPG, just because this game tried a difrent way, we must be hold scholl and dont accept inovation? This is the future accept it. PS. I can play with 3M players insted of 3k
Hmmmm! By definition, then, WoW is also not a persistent world setting, since the world does not actually evolve save through patches. All events in the game are scripted moments that reset over time....only participant characters can evolve, and technically someone else's character has no impact on your own, so that doesn't actually contribute to the persistent world idea as I am reading it here.
But yeah, now I understand why GW wouldn't be labeled a MMORPG or a persistent world, since it is also a static world, which does evolve, but only at the pace set by the player, and since it's not a pervasive environment for everyone playing (effectively being a long chain of instances). Thanks for the clarification!
Take your time and read my post again. And the othhers from wer i take that informaton that also say GW is a presistent world.

In other MMO´s wen you kill a mob it respowns, is the same thing in GW.
Presistent means that that world is there wen you log out and other players change wen you are not there, see my other posts.
If you want to know if this is a MMO or not. See other posts were Gameloading and i got to a conclusion. (we had a a good discution not a trol conversation, try to do that for a change)

Probably b/c WoW fanboy is tantmount to being an EQ-Fanboy, if EQ Fanboys were all 13-17 year olds who will either eventually take guns to school one day and end up in Jail, OR live in their parent's basement all their lives buying nothing but Blizzard products because if they were the types of people who "got out there and played the field", they'd probably already have: A) girlfriend, fulltime job, C) Their own apartment, D) all of the Above.

Wow through all those pages most all of that was GW fanbois and GW haters and a very few sensible people, much like most forums though. I am neither a GW fanboi or hater, quite actually I am indifferent to GW. I bought GW Nightfall and it held my attention for about a day, then I got bored. Its not a bad game, in fact I thought alot of the game was done really well, and it was beautiful too. However it just isnt for me, simple as that.
As for GW being an MMORPG, I do not really consider it an MMO. I consider it more along the lines of a diablo style game, almost like they took the next step above diablo. This is not a bad thing, and it has a market and it is doing well. I congratulate GW on the award, although I think Gamespy is a joke and avoid it like the plague. Also no offense, but being named best MMO of 2006 is like bragging your the smartest kid in the retard class, 2006 was the single worst year for MMOs.
Anyways the best of luck to GWs and to every one quit arguing about whats the best game, just play whichever one is most fun. Or do humanity a favor and follow all the other lemmings off the cliff.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Excuse me, would you mind telling me what happens on WoW instead? After killing something, you wait 10 minutes and it respawns. After killing a player, he comes back to his corpse and respawns. I could go to Stormwind and wipe out every single guard (given that the server doesn't crash, which happened before they added those pointless BG's), only to find that everything respawned later. How's that persistent?
Now, I can't go on a picnic with 20 other players, PK some guy I found along the road or whatever. But what if I play on Hakkar and my friend plays on Zenedar? I can't contact him, becase the game servers can't handle more than 10k (random number) players at the same time and so they've been split. On GW, I can meet up and play with just about everyone that has the game.

Just because SOME channels of IRC host games, does NOT make IRC a game.if doing quests is not playing , then what is it?
Just because SOME quests are done in towns does not make GW an MMORPG.
Thats is why GW is an online game which has SOME MMO aspects, as has been clearly pointed out by IGN.
