my first MMORPG?

I'm looking to buy my first MMORPG, and would just like some ideas on which one is the best to go for.

I've heard good / bad things about all the main ones (swg (the one im tempted to go for atm) , daoc, eq etc), so would just like some good / bad points about the ones that are out.

Or is it worth waiting for the next batch of MMORPGS like WOW, Lineage 2, Matrix Online etc.

mostly after opinions on...

  nice comunity?

friendly and cooperative interaction? a good player base?

Is there plenty to do to keep entertained?

are there any which avoid repetative "advancement" such as chopping would in ou?

which has the most open char creation and scope for developement?

has a strong base for real roleplaying?

Any idea when these new ones are due out?

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance. image

I too am in a similar position. Would the responde' who so graciously offered the suggestions of Ragnarok Online, and EQ, be so kind as to elaborate on why these two games are deserving of attention?

EQ? Why not tell him play the new cutting edge game pong?

Maybe Earth and Beyond could use another player?

The best you thing can do is read the reviews on this site, they pretty much spell out everything you'd ever want to know. I'd suggest one of the 100's new MMORPG's.

Make no mistake, MMORPG's are not games, they are hobbies. If you have a job, you'll need to give up watching TV in order to play one. You'll be better off for it.

Achievers realise that killers as a concept are necessary in order to make achievement meaningful and worthwhile (there being no way to "lose" the game if any fool can "win" just by plodding slowly unchallenged). -bartle

Ok, these jokers might not have decied to help you out, but there is no need to fret, the Vice Man is on the case.  image  And the first order a of buisness here is to forget everything whats his face said about Ragnarok and Eq, the only Roleplayers your going to find in RO are the people who scripted their bots to do a little jig after they collect their onehundreth jellopop card drop.   Then you have EQ, which I would start to bash, but quite frankly I don't have the time or the energy anymore to do so, besides thats hardly going to get your question answered, is it?

Now lets see, you where looking for an mmorpg thats:

    1.  Has a good comunity

    2.  Not repetitve.

    3.  Has Roleplaying opertunities.

Hmmm.... Thats a tough of cheif.  Seeing as most people on this forum, who have played mmorpgs, are spending most of their time here wishing that they could find the same thing, but I'll see what I can do anyway.

    *Thinking*

Ah ha, well it's not perfect, but I'm going to tell you to go with Anarchy Online.  Why Anarchy Online you might ask?  Well lets just se how it fits your criterea shall we:

    1.  Good comunity

I don't think anybody who's played AO has ever come out of the game complaining about the comunity.  The people there are wonderful.  People are honest and willing to help out newbs get into the game and into clans if they wish.  Plus it's one of the only games I know where people actually sit down and socailize.

Also Ao has one of the hipest idea in the history of MMORPG's with the ARC group.  A not so secrete society of players, who work with the poeple at funcom, to specificly help players out of jams, solve disputes, and fix game bugs.  These guys are like virtuial superhereos, and if you ever get a chance to meet them, some of the niciest too.

    2.  Not Repetitive

AO has hundreds if not thousands of missions a player can acomplish.  The problem is even those missions, after a while, become repetive.  But still it is more veritety than most mmorpgs out there.  Really in this catigory you have to choose the lesser of evils as no MMORPG has made a game which doesn't seem repetive, at leat on some level.

    3.  Roleplaying

AO has the most diverse selection of clothing and armour ever to grace th face of the MMORPG world.  So getting your character a disctinct look is wonderfuly easy to do.  Players generaly understand, when you say or do something in character, and usualy begin to play along if you keep at it long enough.  Also the Rave/dance sceene.  Yes thats right AO actually has dance clubs, and beileve it or not their actually active.

Well thats my choice for an existing game anyway, I would through out my thoughts on the games to come, but as they don't currenlty have player bases I can't really give you an informed pitch on how any of those games would work for you.  Oh and if you think I'm just pitching AO because I want to drive up support for my game, like most of these loosers who are going to post to this thread, you're wrong.  While I used to play Anarchy Online, I left it a long time ago, and honestly for ME DAOC is a much better fit, however it doens't nessarly meet your criteria so I"m not even going to bother pitching it.  AO just seems to be the right fit for you.

Also did I mention that AO also has a seven day free trail going on right now.  So it doesn't even cost you anything to give a try to see if you like it  image.

Well I hope you found that informative, maybe if I have more time later I'll pitch you some up and coming titles.

    Chow,

I go with AO as well.

Only played my 30 days because my wife didn't like sci-fi but it was the best 30 days in a mmorpg I have had.  Players would go out of their way to help, more than once I had people guide me to the shop I needed or just give me loot to get me started.

In game help is amazing, as I newbie I had a customer service rep just walk up and ask if I was doing ok and if I had any questions.  There is a winder range of mobs in the newbie grounds than I spotted in all of Horizons.

    Good quests.

Only downside was my wife didn't want to play.

I'm going to have to agree with these guys. Though sci-fi games aren't quite me, I did like the playerbase in AO. I myself prefer DAOC. In both games though, people will talk to you and help you without so much as running into them. It's a really nice environment if you stay away from the powergaming.

www.realmserver.com it ok for a first mmorpg. can be a pain though some people there are harsh.
