It's true that the starting areas DON'T grab you right off. You also get kinda bogged down at the start if you follow all the quests, and start learning Diplomacy, Adventuring, and Crafting/Harvesting all at once. In other words the start areas are kinda bland, and you spend to much time there doing all this newb stuff
I think one problem will be that players won't realize the races and classes are so different, and may get misled by their own conceptions of what they should be, or what they want to play.
For example, IMO the Dark Elf starting area is terrible (some may like it, I don't). But the Dwarf starting area is pretty nice. So that leaves me with, should I be a Dark Elf because thats' the race I like, or be a Dwarf because I'll be spending a good deal of time in that area? I not sure new players will grasp that choice right away, and be able to let go of an area or a race, even though it will actually give them a better initial playing experience.
The same goes for the classes. I struggled with a Druid for a while before giving up and trying something else. I KNEW from reading that the Druid was a nuke class, but I still didn't really play it that way, because well, IT"S A DRUID! for chirstsake. Then I eventually tried a Blood Mage and did much better because it suited my play style better. Again, I'm not sure new players will be able to let go of a class because of what they THINK it should be, and try something else that will actually work better for them.
Obviously the furry crowd is gonna stick with the Raki, and Vulmane toons no matter the area or the class restrictions.
Nice screen shots, but did you notice they put up rail guards on the tree houses? Kinda wimpy. Real elves dont' need rails in tree houses.

Actually, those aren't rail guards, they're decoration. If you look at the platforms ahead, you'll notice there are none. At lower levels, it's easy to die by running off, lol...
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
Ok. First if someone says something negative about SoH, its not a flame anymore... before when NDA breakers did, sure you could call it a flame because they were making comments that at the time could not be checked.
Sure SoH can take a good screen shot... but when the game is in motion, it looks really bad. I have never seen a major mmo release with such poor animations... I mean, this is a game where i was going to buy a PPU for 300 bucks just so i could get more out of the animations... why on EARTH would you say you support such hardware... i mean in no way could this game be a bench mark.... or a show case. Bottom line, i expected this game to have FAR better graphics then my current mmo (FFXI) and guess what... vanguard doesnt even come close, its not even in the top 3 when it comes to visuals. Then people go on about gameplay... i mean SoH is not built around game play... its built around "world"... and as such Vanguard also has very poor gameplay, very poor combat engine... some what interesting crafting but its nothing major... nothing that certain elements of it does not already exist in other games.
If someone comes here now, and says that vanguard is a buggy, bloated piece of vapor then guess what... thats what it is... not a flame, but fact.
There is much frustration for us who have followed this game and were also upset at the third gen titles...
After playing this game for 20 levels, I will be staying in my second gen game (FFXI) until one of these devs gets a clue... no im not going to go into a big rant about what is good design and what is bad, games like SoH and WoW are bad for some of the many same reasons.
In the end, the people who come here and say that SoH is good is simply lying, they are simply trying to force feed... Most mmo'ers kinda fit in to a certain group, your either to n00b or weak to play a great pve mmorpg (like FFXI) so you goto an easy game like WoW and EQ2 ... BUT these same people who play those 2 easy games come here and complain that there to easy.. so at the end of the day, they really don't fit in to anything... so they see SoH as there "last chance" so to speak...
Well the last couple of mini patches etc, combined with some tweaking of .ini files has at least made the game playable for me which is a start. Just for the record though.... Im running a 64x2/4200 with 4gb RAM and 2 XFX 7900 GT's, shes no slouch, but I cant get major detail settings above 30% or its slideshow time. Be that as it may.... its early days and performance and bugs are not my beef with this title. So I continued to play my wolfthingy necro the last few nights and just like AnarchyArt told me, the game does get better. The quests are a tiny bit more fun and the lore is a tiny bit more interesting. I will say that the more I play it, the more I like it. Im by no means sold and there would have to be major, major improvements to the basic things promised in the hype for me to even consider playing come retail. For example the "initial wow factor". I was reading an article on Gamespy where they were asking the devs about this and the devs responded that they had tried to make every starting point for every race in a way that makes the new player pass by some feature of landscape or something that makes them stop and go "wow". Well that hasnt happend once for me yet... in fact the exact opposite.... I look at everything I have seen so far and go "yawn" Thats just one example of the missed opportunity I have been harping about. But Im going to keep plugging away till release because I desperately want to like it. Who knows it might grow on me yet.
Seriously man, with that system you should easily be playing on Highest Quality with a good 20 fps. I have 2 gigs of ram and a crappier everything else and I can play on Highest Quality with a respectable 18fps nowadays. I urge you to start a High Elf btw. Everything in that area makes me go Wow! Something is wrong with your computer somehow razor, with 4 gigs of ram you should be flawless. Recheck your /ini file against morts game tweaks and turn of your startup items and defrag. Virus scan wouldnt hurt and delete your cookies too! It's gotta be something...

No, it's an OPINION. One you are entitled to, but I completely disagree with.

If your 5 feet tall, your short. There are certain things that are fact. Fact because we already have existing good mmos to compare it to... basically Vanguard is about four foot 3....
This is not an issue of TASTE, there is no way on earth a sane person can play this game and say "Wow, that spell was really cool, you can tell they put a lot of time in to that"
or
"Wow, that was a very dynamic quest"... in fact everything i have seen is 100% static... third gen was suppose to be about DYNAMIC content...

Again, you're wrong. You're entitled to your Opinion, but not to claim you determine the "Facts" in the world. Here is a Fact: The 4 Beta Servers have a consistant 6k to 10k people playing, with numbers increasing everyday. Here's another Fact: My entire guild has now tried and likes the game, and we're all moving to Vanguard. And a last Fact: I, and everyone I play with, do not experience 90% of the negative claims people make about the game.
I've tested this game for some time now, and although it still needs work & is launching early, it's a damn good game. Infact, let's say that's a Fact.
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
I mean, you come from SWG? I mean, one of the worst mmo's ever made... My negative claims? so your saying that Vanguard has good character models and animiations? that the quest system is not 100% wowish?... and the only other means to progress is basicly grinding the same mobs over and over... the combat engine and group dynamics are so lame and boring that you would get bored by chain 12... reason why a game like FFXI can get away with grind centrix xp is because the party dynamics are very deep.... this game just FAILS on ever level... again, FACT... the combat engine is so dated i dont know what more i can say. I mean, there are guilds from DnL that are coming to SoH... not really anything to huff and puff about eh?
damn good game? compared to what? Runescape?

Why do you care if other people LIKE Vanguard? We are entitled to LIKE the games we want to. Just because YOU think we are crazy - well fine then I guess we're crazy. Still doesn't change the fact that there are a fair number of us who like it. That's the great thing about MMO's. There are plenty out there for everyone to find something they like. (And, for those that haven't - even more new ones coming along everyday!)
See, I tried FFXI and well, I didn't like it so much. Doesn't mean it's a bad game, but it wasn't for me. And you know what? That's the great thing about ME paying for my games. I get to decide what games that I like to play rather than some stranger on a forum trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't like.
Now if YOU decide to pony up and pay for my subscription to a game of YOUR choosing - well I may be willing to give it a try again. Until your check arrives - I'll spend my money how I choose!
Idk about the "...." part, -my issue is when people come here and hype this game... even I at one point was a fan but at some point... you have too look at something and call it for what it actually is... and not about what it could become... (you know, pay to beta with the chance they figure this mess out)
There is this blind fath that a lot of people are about to take and basically pay to beta this game... reason devs pull this crap is because people continue to eat it up... its an ethics issue imo. M$ got out, and while all the vanbois said otherwise we all knew what the big picture was.... Sigil feed in to that... and on top of that, MMORPG.COM also feeds the hype machine...

where you getting these numbers from? Personally seeing them, and others will vouche for them. Anyone playing Beta see them regularly. Yesterday, I saw Server 1 with 3900, Server 2 with 3200, Server 3 with 1200 & PVP Server with 1400. I mean, you come from SWG? I mean, one of the worst mmo's ever made... Again, Opinion. I thin k it was once the Best MMO ever made, and there over 100k poeple that would agree. My negative claims? so your saying that Vanguard has good character models and animiations? Fantastic models and animations. that the quest system is not 100% wowish?... I HATED WoW, and the quests are nothing like it. Heck, a WoW friends of mine said the quests were different, and if you had spent any time playing you would know that. Sure, some quest types are similar, but WoW didn't invent them. and the only other means to progress is basicly grinding the same mobs over and over... What game are you talking about? I've NEVER grinded in Vanguard, I've only done quests. the combat engine and group dynamics are so lame and boring that you would get bored by chain 12... Again, try playing the game for a bit. The combat is VERY complex at around LVL 10. reason why a game like FFXI can get away with grind centrix xp is because the party dynamics are very deep.... this game just FAILS on ever level... again, FACT... For YOU, AGAIN, NOT FACT. OPINION. the combat engine is so dated i dont know what more i can say. Wow, that's hilarious. I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
pretty darn good graphics, next gen indeed, my machine is pretty beefy and I couldn't run at max, i'm assuming it'll be better by end of beta... with all the disconnects and missing animations i'd expect it to be in closed beta, not open beta.... might have started stress testing tooo early, probably publishers pushing the developers to get it done faster to compete with Burning Crusade...
I'm sticking with WoW w/ BC coming out Tuesday.
Vanguard looks great for some, hopefully it lives up to all the hype once released, from my experience in beta I don't think it will. didn't grab me the way WoW did... everyone says first "noob" zones in Vanguard are kind of bland and boring, that's usually a good indicator of how the rest of the game will be. Blizzard figured that out and made the game grab you from the beginning.
for those who like Vanguard, cheers, it's a pretty good game hope it turns out well. for those who are excited about burning crusade.... less then a week....
for people playing other MMO's, hope ya'll liking what ya do too.

Good points, although I do believe by launch a lot of the "issues" will be ironed out. That said, Vanguard is being release too early and will DEFINATLY be a better game in a year for launch.

exactly, that's the point of testing, to iron out "issues"
btw I think SWG did have hookers in it.... and blackjack... it had gambling and I remember entertainers taking tips for "private dances" so not quite hookers but strippers! almost as good

All that still doesn't change the fact that a good number of us just outright like the game as is. Are we not allowed to make that choice for ourselves? I didn't realize we had to check with some secret organization to find out what games are o.k. to like and which ones we are supposed to hate. I must have missed that memo.
You can say all you want how you don't like the game, that's your right. You can even state it as "fact" if you wish. That won't change the FACT that many of us are currently playing - and liking it. It also won't change the FACT that many of us are planning on buying it when it does ship. Sorry if that contradicts your "facts".
wow TedDanson you are everything that is wrong with MMO communities and the MMORPG.com community.... if you have to go off on someone for liking a game like that you really need to take a step back and bow out...
you don't like FFXI? think it's weak? fine, you are entitled to that opinion. Just as Wyzwun is entitled to his opinion. I love browsing forums on MMORPG.com and finding posts like yours to report to the forum admins, makes me feel like a knight in shining armor protecting the innocent from idiocy

Freedom of opinion, and freedom of expression are such important parts of this wonderful country. I am free to express my opinions openly to my peers in any community I see fit. Anyway I apologized beforehand because I knew it would offend someone. I am sorry again that I offended you, but at the time I really just needed to say that. I'm not here to preach that my opinion is fact, or that it is better than anyone else's opinion, but when someone comes to an open forum like this spouting self indulgent crap like that I feel you must fight fire with fire.
You seem pretty judgemental for a knight in shining armor by the way.....

Ok sorry it took me a while to reply. Rellies showed up unexpectedly yesterday afternoon so I didnt get near my PC.
Firstly about my PC....
I am running 1280x1024 with pretty much everything at 30% and shadows off. The framerate is an acceptable 15-25 usually and Im not too worried about trying to get it higher as it looks perfectly fine as is.
I have been told by a number of people who should know that removing 2gb would be a good idea. After hearing it again from some of you, Im thinking I may just do it. Whoever said XP only adresses 2gb of RAM, your basically right. I stuck it in to be Vista ready and Im not even sure if Im gonna get it yet lol.
I try to do diskcleanups and defrags etc regularly and pretty much everything else runs excellent. For example I can crank up Oblivion to about 85% and still get 25+ fps so I think its set up fairly well, but there is probably room for improvement.
Im in full agreement about the varied starting points. I have been starting more new toons to try and get a good look around the world. The variation in the amount of work that has gone into each starting location is pretty obvious. The High Elf home looks stunning, where as the Vulmane home is pretty "basic" would be the best description. Of course some of it is by design, but some is clearly a case of unfinished business, which is ok for Beta.....
Im more impressed by the complexity of trade skills as I start to look into it too. Another thing I found REALLY cool was the way you can actually chop down a tree , that was a surprise and a very nice one.
Despite my best efforts Ive got a bad feeling this silly game is growing on me. It was kinda like this for me in EQ1. I started as a Barb Shaman and the first time I stepped outside Halas into the wider world I was like . I saw a snow orc on a hill and ran up to him to see if he had anything to say or a quest or something. Of course he was more than ready for my noobish behaviour and pummeled some learning into me and gave me a quick trip back to town via death LOL .........lesson learned........
But soon after I started what became my main. A Half Elf Ranger. I found the grind of the first 15 levels or so almost turned me off. Then I pulled an all nighter with an excellent group and got to 17 and got Dual Weild and I was basically sold. Spent the next 2 years putting in some crazy hours on EQ1 and by the time I quit I wasnt over it.... just wanted to play DAoC for the RvR...... but thats another story.
I can feel VSoH is having the same effect on me. The more I discover about the world and the more I see, the more its starting to suck me in. The one factor it has over other current MMOs, happens to be the one factor Im really big on.... Huge Open Environments. Exploring is my thang in MMO's. Im often found at level 5 many miles from where I should logically be. SoH seems to offer me that in a way I havnt really seen since EQ1. EQ2 environments were way to small and in WoW it basically goes without saying.
I find Im actually looking forward to getting home tonight to do some more looking around etc......
If they continue the rate of improvement of the last 2 weeks.... who knows.... I may even play it....

Someone will, lol...
Here's another from up in the trees...
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
No, it's an OPINION. One you are entitled to, but I completely disagree with.Rites of the Four Horsemen

Infact, let's say that's a Fact.

where you getting these numbers from?

If you don't like it, fine, but there QUITE a few people out there that do. FAR more then people I've seen say they don't like it.

tested it, thought it was ok at best...
pretty darn good graphics, next gen indeed, my machine is pretty beefy and I couldn't run at max, i'm assuming it'll be better by end of beta... with all the disconnects and missing animations i'd expect it to be in closed beta, not open beta.... might have started stress testing tooo early, probably publishers pushing the developers to get it done faster to compete with Burning Crusade...
Blizzard figured that out and made the game grab you from the beginning.
for those who like Vanguard, cheers, it's a pretty good game hope it turns out well. for those who are excited about burning crusade.... less then a week....
for people playing other MMO's, hope ya'll liking what ya do too.

exactly, that's the point of testing, to iron out "issues"
btw I think SWG did have hookers in it.... and blackjack... it had gambling and I remember entertainers taking tips for "private dances" so not quite hookers but strippers! almost as good

Heck I would love to talk to someone about this game who likes it- my system cannot handle it. My aol im name is astralablon
