Hmmm... this is something I've felt... I started in Qalia, and HATED it... I really didn't like it. Then I started in a variety of different places until I found one, and started having fun. I'd suggest moving around until you feel that way. The newer the starting area, the better the build IMO. Kojan has the best starting stories IMO....
LOL No doubt. Started as a gnome, cool enough. Got to Mekalia, super freakin' cool. Best gnome town ever. Left town for .....what the....why I am I suddenly on the beach in Southern California? Where did all those palm trees come from....maybe if my gnome had a hawaiian shirt.....
Qalia isn't my favorite by any stretch.... the gnome library and the gulch are super fun though.
Everything else has been awesome, and I agree, Kojan rocks. Tomb of Tsarn....very nice.
Hehe, I started a gnome psio last night on what looks like a new server (beta 3). I saw screen captures of the gnome town some time ago and I wanted to try a psio. It was very linear starting out, but very fast-paced. I only died once because I wasn't careful about my back. The city environs really give a certain atmosphere, as do all the gnome biddies giving out the quests.
I was at L5 adventurer in maybe 2 hours, probably less, without trying hard and with filling out all the evaluations with comments. This place is a good start for people new to MMOs or even to RPGs. I got a good sense for how to play my class with the starting spells available and the several acquired in process. It would make sense for Sigil to design a fast-track intro for veterans, to get you through at least to L5 without repeating the tutorial. My sense is that one is invariably going to get to at least high L4 or low L5 just with the intro quests, and it would make sense for these to be automatically completed rather than force repetition for re-rollers. The same comment might apply to diplomacy and crafting, but I have not completed enough of those to venture an opinion.
I agree that the desert environment doesn't make a lot of sense in terms of RP tradition. I suspect the reason for it is that Sigil wanted traditional pointy-eared types on every continent. It would be cool if there were a network of tunnels in the "deepdark" connecting various regions of the continent. The bone pit quest that I did "skyside" was challenging and fun. It reminded me of surveying and sampling in my early SWG days, sneaking close to things that could kill you in seconds. The library quest (so far) has been a bitch. I don't know if my psio can get through it without the assistance of 2 or 3 other toons. I'll be L6 the next time, maybe I'll get some new spells that will make it easier.
My only other toon so far has been a Thestran human druid. I like the druid class a bit better than the psio class, because it's more versatile. It has a nice complement of spells at early levels, including a defensive buff and a heal for other players. The Tursh quest lines are somewhat less linear, consisting of several different branches some of which should be pursued simultaneously. The Tursh area seems a bit more broken and disorganized than Mekalia; I've got a couple of things on my to-do list, including one quest, that I cannot figure out how to do. Money is also a problem for me in Tursh, unlike Mekalia, but one possible reason for that is a character-progress bug, now reportedly fixed, that might have cost me some rewards.
Good to see you're giving it a fair shake Razorback. That's all any game can ask of a player. If after that a player decides it's not for them - so be it. Time to move on and look for a new game.
Freedom of opinion, and freedom of expression are such important parts of this wonderful country. I am free to express my opinions openly to my peers in any community I see fit. Anyway I apologized beforehand because I knew it would offend someone. I am sorry again that I offended you, but at the time I really just needed to say that. I'm not here to preach that my opinion is fact, or that it is better than anyone else's opinion, but when someone comes to an open forum like this spouting self indulgent crap like that I feel you must fight fire with fire. You seem pretty judgemental for a knight in shining armor by the way.....
But then you also have to acknowledge the freedom of those same peers to report a post they deem inappropriate. You are completely correct.
Man, if I were Spiderman I would totally suck....
But yeah, that was my mistake. I tend to type before I think.

A few weeks back I almost lost my Mod status from going off on a Mel Gibson like anti religious rant in a thread and had to kiss some major behind to keep my job..... but on the bright side.... Stradden's behind is very kissable
Dont worry about it.... we all go off course a little sometimes

Well the last couple of mini patches etc, combined with some tweaking of .ini files has at least made the game playable for me which is a start. Just for the record though.... Im running a 64x2/4200 with 4gb RAM and 2 XFX 7900 GT's, shes no slouch, but I cant get major detail settings above 30% or its slideshow time.
I'm running a amd 3200, 2gb ram, and 1 7800gt and I run around this world on the highest detail setting possible... When I group, I drop it down to balanced. I'm not sure what is wrong with your system.
Regards,
Am running the exact same system as you except with a x850 xt for now lol and am playing on the same setting as you and i never turn it down , runs great I love the game looks stunning on my system
I would very much consider buying this game maybe 2-3 months down the road. It has alot of potential, as long as the community will be as decent as I expect it to be.
Right now it is impossible to fix even half of the bugs by the end of the month. Once they smooth everything out, i'll buy the game.

Same here- I also want to wait and see where we are in regards to hardware after a few months with this game. Then I am happy to upgrade. A very close guild mate loves this game and has started to progress. She states that the game gets better as you level. Now I am a grinder in play style. This is perfect for me. Now as far as hardware goes- I can't beta test it. I need to upgrade. And that is fine with me. All PC gamers know we have to upgrade at times. Just a fact of life.

And that's the nice thing about MMO's. They do progress from where they start from. It's also perfectly viable to jump into one 3 months, 6months, even years after launch and still enjoy them.
There are many MMO's we can point to that are better now than at launch. There are also a fair number that have gone downhill from launch...no need to bring up those names.
The first 3-6 months will be the make or break for Vanguard I think. If the players see steady progress towards finishing content and fixing bugs, then I think it'll be fine. If the players see month after month of excuses for bugs not getting fixed and unfinished content put off again and again. And then they announce the pre-order for the "New Expansion" before anything gets fixed ... that will probably be the end.
as someone else so eloquently put it on another forum, "I want a game that I can use to wind down with for two or three hours after work school not an exercise in masochism".
I don't care to lose massive amounts of experiance because some fool in a PUG can't play his tank/healer/ puller correctly. I have no desire to do corpse runs whether they are " optional" or mandatory. Nothing spells sucky game design more than " here you go fool this mob just handed you your ass on a platter now run back there grab your corpse and show it who is boss". I really don't care if it is solo feasable by grinding out 2347 blue level mob per level. I want to be entertained for my 15 a month, and repeatedly getting kicked in the sack is not my idea of fun.
I guess I am not just a hardcore gamer, shame on me I put fun game play in front of self induced pain and masochism.

oh yeah lots of fun! getting power leveled when I am offline, excuse me while I go whoooppeeee in my pants. Sorry but this is the Frankensteins monster of games. Good ideas from half a dozen others all stiched and patched together in a mockery of game design. Sigil should have stuck to their guns ( vision) and made one hell of a good niche game instead of listening to the whiners like me who hate that sort of thing. Now all they have to show for several years worth of effort is a grand example of mediocrity at it's finest.

No shame at all. We should all play games we find fun. Why would anyone play a GAME that isn't fun for them?
Don't be surprised though if other players find exactly what you described - fun.

Razor if you could find the time could you update us on what you notice if anything from playing with the ram .Am building a new system and i was going to build a smoking rig so my wife could use my old one in vanguard and with all ive been reading am starting to have second thoughts about just what i will build I know for playing single person games yes what i was building would rock them , but i havent been able to finish a single player game in a long time lol
Funny everytime ive upgraded it seems like i still get the same old crap happening only its a little prettier doing it

It's not gonna wreck. You wish it wrecks. Ok, it's not ready for release (as of now) to a good deal of people. Just so you know, they are patching ATM. Thats right. They take it seriously as they should.

bet you 5 bucks USD they will be offering 10 day free trials to try and bolster the server pops before the end of April. Out of maybe 20 MMORPG players that I have know either via internet or in real life exactly one is planning on buying the game as of today. This time last year more than half were. The game turned from a vision to a patchwork quilt of halfasssed ideas somewhere along the line. BTW they could just save themselves a few patches and substitute the EQII client if they change much more LOL
The problem most people have is not with the graphics, its with the animations and spell effects, they are totally lame.
I will repeat it, once again, just for the sake of making sure peoples don't forget it.
My main problem was always about raid been enforced on me, 100% or 20% is still way too much. I don't know how many different variations of saying that I can find, but I will try. I also think that quite many persons are turning away from Vanguard for the exact same reason. A casual CAN dream to complete a quest for a group, for tradeskill, for solo, for diplomacy...but a casual CAN'T DREAM about completing the ultimate raiding reward. When someone can't dream, you lose much of the players. Even me, I can't dream about that, since I don't raid. Now, if I can't dream about grouping in Vanguard to the highest summit, I tell you that many casuals won't be able to dream about it either!
Again, raiding is the problematic keeping me away from Vanguard, just like PvP could keep away many carebears away from a game like AoC or DAoC prior Gaheris. Raid-free servers are really needed! And they are needed at release, no matter how buggy! Adding them later would get only a fraction of the benefit while angering some peoples on other servers, since you change the "rules" AFTER they select their servers and invest themselves, you can't do that post-launch.
PS: And before you start thinking I am a part of an insignificant minority, do you think that peoples who don't raid are likely or unlikely to join online forums about videos game? I rest my case, for now...

The vision.... come on. Everyone know that game design is a hard thing. Sometimes, ideas (that is why you do a vision document when creating software) just aren't working when translated to code lines.
This is from the official site :
Please remember that massively multiplayer games are living entities, constantly changing and evolving. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is currently both pre-release and pre-beta testing. The information in this FAQ reflects current thinking and planning but is also subject to change and modification. We will always do our best to manage expectations and note when something is fairly set in stone, or speculative, or somewhere in-between. That said, we will undoubtedly make some changes and adjustments, especially during beta when many of our more ambitious ideas can be played out and tested. We will, however, endeavor especially to accurately count the number of continents.
You may notice that we don't talk in detail about certain subjects or that certain answers seem a bit vague. Generally, those subjects and answers are just not ready for detailed discussion or answers. We look forward to being able add more detail and clarify some answers as we updated the FAQ.
Speaking of updates, we will alert you to new material or changes in the FAQ according to a color code. That way you won't have to pour through the entire FAQ just to see what we're up to.
All I know is that the beta servers are down and I keep checking about every 10 minutes to see if they are back up. They put in yet another patch tonight full of lots of stuff. Shamans got a rework so I'm very eager to see whats going on there and Monks got some love to. Lots of bug fixes. Tons of stuff in the notes. The game is fun.
I was pulling about 40 FPS earlier this evening before the servers went down running 1280X1024 on balanced. This is a definite improvement over the last several days. Things are getting better every day. Lets hope for a decent launch.
The game has pulled me in. I've heard it has no hook but it hooked me and its hooked other people as well. Can't wait to get back in game.
The problem most people have is not with the graphics, its with the animations and spell effects, they are totally lame.

When someone can't dream, you lose much of the players. Even me, I can't dream about that, since I don't raid. The "kind hardcore guild" on my server, you know what they do after an expansion? They wait to see me reach max level, then they start massive powerleveling! Just to keep a good feeling with the server, I mean, they figure it was better for many social reasons to delay until they see some "hardcore" non-raiders before they storm to max level! I don't understand why they do so, nor do I really care, but I witness it nonetheless.

Glad to see you're still around Anofalye. I thought you said you were giving up on this forum? Heh, glad to see you're still fighting for your cause. I don't think your idea is part of a minority - heck I'm not that crazy about raiding. I do think your stance is a very small minority though. See WoW subscribers for reference.
Even though there are probably a fair number of players that may agree with you that raiding isn't all that. Very, very, few of those same players will absolutely refuse to play a game that has raiding in it. Again, see WoW subscribers for reference. Big difference there.
P.S. Forgot to add: Raiding is definitely NOT the reason people (other than you) are turning away from Vanguard right now. Heck, if anything the Beta Servers may be the closest thing you see to Raid-Free Servers, so you should enjoy them.

WoW is increasing the ranks of the players who will not accept raiding ever again. As more players realised it implications, and what it meant. DREAMING is of the essence, and raiding kills dreaming before it can even be born. And many players would play longer if they don't stumble on raiding.
Well, I try to go away...but then some folks provoke me back in with blatant messages that fuel me...and I want Vanguard to be a cool game, no matter how much some uber raiders may "hate" me. They must see their own noobishness throught me, real ubah wouldn't flinch but smiling back!

You are completely correct.
Man, if I were Spiderman I would totally suck....
But yeah, that was my mistake. I tend to type before I think.

Ted even I have been banned from this site.... for basically exactly the same thing....
A few weeks back I almost lost my Mod status from going off on a Mel Gibson like anti religious rant in a thread and had to kiss some major behind to keep my job..... but on the bright side.... Stradden's behind is very kissable
Dont worry about it.... we all go off course a little sometimes

No worries.Regards,
Am running the exact same system as you except with a x850 xt for now lol and am playing on the same setting as you and i never turn it down , runs great I love the game looks stunning on my system
Right now it is impossible to fix even half of the bugs by the end of the month. Once they smooth everything out, i'll buy the game.
I saw a lot of dev post talking about animation... maybe those are only "placeholders". Same goes with spell effect.
It's beta after all.

I miss DAoC

oh yeah lots of fun! getting power leveled when I am offline, excuse me while I go whoooppeeee in my pants.

Anyways. You really don't like the game so you should probably not lose your time on this board.
If some people like that playstyle, fine. There's a game for you out there i'm pretty sure.

Don't be surprised though if other players find exactly what you described - fun.

The Mod post is proving you wrong. Things do get better and you just can't accept it.

bet you 5 bucks USD they will be offering 10 day free trials to try and bolster the server pops before the end of April.

It applies to every games BTW.

I will repeat it, once again, just for the sake of making sure peoples don't forget it.

Now, if I can't dream about grouping in Vanguard to the highest summit, I tell you that many casuals won't be able to dream about it either!
