Yes. I bought into the hype. I bought FFXI the day it came out. i even pre ordered it. i thought the game was going to be great. i mean....waht FF game hasnt been great?
So i load the game onto my computer. all 7 gigs of it. since i have 56k i opted to go to my friends house and download the patches. (he to bought the game) well, i decided to watch him play for a while. That's where the dissapointment started.
I don't remember much about it because it was a while ago. basicaly im just throwing out my two cents to people to try to get them from buying a horrible game, but i remember that it wasnt possible to find out stats about people. you couldnt find out what lvl or prof they were. NOTHING! and even when you wanted to highlight them it ended up being a pain in the ass. they'd have to be close to you and you'd have to click right on their body (torso) if you clicked on a limb you couldnt highlight them. I guess the other big dissapointment was that when you lvl...NOTHING HAPPENS! (aside from the fact that if i remember right the game raises your stats a couple points for you.) or atleast we coudltn figure out anything to do. we figured that maybe lvling allowed you to wear new armor and weapons that are the same lvl as you. that sucks!! it doesnt allow you to be a badass...it doesnt allow you to be different...youll be like everyone else. the game just all around sucked. we played it for an hour and never played it again.
The bottom line is...i wouldn't reccomend buying this game. I think the best MMORPG out there is Anarchy Online. In AO you can be as diverse as you with literally thousands of weapons and armor. alhtough the best armor is limited there are still quite a few different armors you can choose from to be diverse and a badass. same with weapons. also...you can be diverse in that yo ucan wear implants that buff your stats even higher so yo ucan get in weapons many lvls higher than yourself. this game is all about teaming. you cant lvl with out teaming which makes the game that much funner cause you make friends fast. also...probably the best thing about AO is the ability to post items. you can simply pick up an item and drop it in the chat box and it makes a link. people can click on it and find everything out about it. just things like that make it really great. i havent played EQ but i know many people that say AO is much better.
These are my .02 and maybe FFXI will fix its major problems..but the fact that nothing happens when you lvl makes the game not worth it to me. RPG's are all about lvling and when you lvl and nothing happens...or you cant up your stats..theyre just upped for you...that will get boring very ver quick.

also i forgot to mentino that you cant start new characters without paying extra money. so your kind of stuck with one charactr unless you want to fork out the dough. also...they mesed up the game with this whole "play onlie" progam. basically you start this seperate program to start playing the game. This wouldnt have been so bad if they let you create your own username and password. but they issue you this funky ass name and password. i lost my u/pw and wasnt able to cancel my account with out. it was a pain to cancel my account. if you insist on buying this game dont lose your user name and password for playonline. youll be screwed.

I think You missed ALL from this game if you are writing this way ... Do you ever heard about story, community, quests ? (After your post i think u dont ...).
And if You really think that RPG is about leveling then ... no comment.

You did not give FFXI enough time for anything! First of all you CAN find out other player's lvls and equipment by clicking and checking on them! Second, you judge the rest by control, you can configure every key. 3rd, play online takes only 20 seconds from clicking on it to getting into FFXI,so you must be really lazy. LOL

You can make your own PW and you are SUPPOSED to write it down in the manual and the username is what, 7 digits and it auto saves so you never have to type it in. And you can change your class at ANYTIME so you do not need multiple characters.

Well alright, ill give you guys that, i probably didnt give it enough time to figure it al out. but! it shouldnt be that difficult ti figure out! they still have to adress the selecting people issue. its hard as hell.
But...i dont know what kind of online RPG's you have been playing..but MMORPG's are all about lvling. thats what makes the game fun. thats what makes any RPG fun. lvling...so you can get newer better stuff that beat on monsters/people with. quests are alright..but they give you better stuff to beat on mosters/people with. the community?....its only to be able to team with them to lvl and get newer/better stuff. i mean..common...take away the lvling and you take away the whole point of an RPG. storylines in MMORPG's are usually kind of weak. the only storylines worth following are the ones that arent online RPG's. i.e. the console FF's or zelda or games like that. and lets face...the lvling system on this game sucks balls.
maybe ill give this game a shot again here in a few months. i heard anarchy online sucked for about 6 months from its release. however...i dont think theyll ever change the way the lvling system works so i probably will never like the game. obviously this game isnt for me...maybe other people will like it. but my advice is....if you have never played a MMORPG before dont make FFXI your first one. ive never played EQ but id even suggest that one over this. my realy big suggestion would be to try anarchy online. get to lvl 50 and then compare it to FFXI. if you still like FFXI after anarchy online or EQ then i guess that kind of gaming is just your style.

Now anybody who's ever read any of my posts knows I'm not the worlds biggest FFXI fan, infact I really really hate the game, but thats besides the point. What I am posting here to say is that I'm absolutly sick of people like sgtbrach going into game forums and posting negitive information about games. These forums where designed so people could share information about and around FFXI in privacey and peace without anyoying other people in general discussion. Not so you could come in here and spout your big, uninformed mouth off. If you really feel the need to post your opinion about a game, they do have a review section on this sight, and I'm sure you would be more than welcome to spew your tripe there.

Uninformed? everything i said was right out of the game. the only thing i was wrong about was how to look up people's lvls and stats. the only point i was making in this post was if anyone was thinking about buying the game i was posting some info that might deter some people from buying a game liek this. i know a lot of people wouldnt buy the game just because of the lvling system and thats something they should know.
maybe i should have posted in the opinion section. unforntunately i wasnt aware of it otherwise i would have.

Well, Sgtbrach, if you really don't think what you said was uninformed, then I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I took a closer look at what you said (I'll just stick to the ingame issues). Basically, you made three points:
1. There's no way to tell what a player's stats or level are.
2. Leveling up does nothing.
3. Well...I don't even think there was a third point.
Well, I'll just look at each of these numerous points individually:
1. There is, in fact, a way to tell what a player's stats and level are, as you've found out. There really isn't much to say about this. You were just wrong.
2. Leveling up does raise your stats, your max HP and MP, and opens up new active and passive abilities. You did complain that leveling up "doesnt allow you to be a badass". Well, I'm sorry, but in the hour that it took you to get to, perhaps, level 6(I'm supposing), you're just not going to be a "badass". There is rare lower level equipment that you could get that would definitely set you apart from the other players, but you probably wouldn't be able to acquire them due to their rarity. Nothing you can really complain about since, if they weren't rare, everybody would be wearing them. Plus, there are over a million characters and 500,000 different accounts. At some point you're going to come across somebody that does look like you. At an hour's worth of playtime, if you can find something you think will set you apart from other players and make you unique, you're wrong. If something is that easy to get, everybody has it. Anyway, if leveling up doesn't do anything, how do you suppose those level 30+ players got so strong? Just wrong here.
You did make some points about AO that, in your opinion, make AO a superior game to FFXI. You said that, "alhtough the best armor is limited there are still quite a few different armors you can choose from to be diverse and a badass" and that, "this game (AO) is all about teaming. you cant lvl with out teaming which makes the game that much funner cause you make friends fast." These two things are both very true of FFXI, especially the latter statement. What will you come up with now?
Sounds to me like you just wanted to be a "badass" within an hour of playing.
I must say that FFXI is typical "party's game" (except Beastmaster char) ... and without nice people/friends on your way in Vanadiel its really, really boring and hard to play.
Any higher quest require >full party to do ... and BCNM or some areas are really chalengable ... and FUN !!!
But first You need level up (which is boring when u want get advanced job and level in same places, killing same stuff ...). Again - without friends/good people its imposible to do .. and stay playing FFXI.
