Yeah what gives the game is being systematically castrated. This is really reminding me of the classic Horizons debacle. Lots of hype, deleted features list longer than features list, etc...
I agree with everyone saying that this game needs more time before release.
But what i don't agree with is the soe bashing. Soe has a bad track record, if you call making the garbage swg game, even a bigger pile of garbage, and adding in some xpacs to eq1 that nobody agreed with. Yet they ignore the fact that eq2 is a solid game and getting better, and mxo has been going better along soes ownership.
Name a game company, and youll find bashers, and reasons to bash all over the place. But really when it comes down to it, they are still human beings, and people expect them to be gods of the game craft.
SOE is by far not the best company out there, far from it, but theres far worse. Sure attack me over i w/e, just enjoy flocking onto the omg soe sucks bandwagon when 70% of you have never once ever had any bad experiences with soe. but it's the "cool" thing to do, so i don't blame you.
But vanguard HAS to be released. mmorpg creation is expensive, it takes alot money and alot of time. You think sigil wanted to have soe as their publisher, that it was their dream come true when they excepted? They left microsoft(or microsoft left them, who knows), and went for soe because it was their only option and they needed funding.
SOE wants the game out, they obviously don't feel the game is worth the extended development time, and they want some of their money back that they spent financing the game. And sigil can't run with no funds.
You think any other publisher would keep investing cash to vanguard on a "when its done" motto? What if it takes another 2 years, thats even more money they have to earn back after release before they start hitting profits.
Money rules everything, and all you gamers out there who think "if i was running the company id let them take all the time they need" If you were in that situation and you had to finance the game, with no real promise as to earning your money back(as mmorpgs are, some flop despite what the devs expect, look at wows massive success and how they didn't expect that much success, the exact opposite can happen JUST as easily) then you may make the same decision.
You think sigil didn't discuss it with soe, saying we need more time please? soe didnt just say "STFU GTFO NUBS WORK WORK". They probably were more along the lines of, we need more time to make the game ready. soe responds "we have been monitoring the progress and we agree that the came could use more time. But as it stands now, we simply can not invest more money to keep financing, and we would like to see some return for our investment, we will want you to be releasing early in 2007, probably around february. We hope you can add enough polish, and get enough features in for it to be a success, but this is just what we have to do.
Then came around 2007, sigil needs more money, and soe aren't willing to provide more for devlopment, so they agree to release on the 30th of jan. Not every problem will be fixed, and not all features will be in. But hopefully enough for a decent release.
But thats just how its got to be. Games are a labor of love, and a labor of cash, you can't run a game on love, and you can't sail a boat without water, if WAR ran out of cash, it'd release. If gods and heroes or age of conan ran out of money itd release. youd say something like "but they could always procure more funds." no, not always, its always a matter of how much they are willing to spend and how much they hope to gain
