i don't get what the big deal is... the expansion is more or less a mandatory purchase. you can buy it or quit wow, not much point in playing wow without the expansion. yes the numbers are impressive but it's only normal, i believe this is the first near-mandatory expansion to such a popular game as well...
Well now to someone who actually plays tbc for an opinion. Without question in my experiance the best expansion I've bought. Blizzard has without question cut the balls of games like vanguard so dont expect to see any change on what is the biggest mmo out atm it will stay the same for at least another 12 months. It's just up to blizzard to counter WAR next year the way they have Vanguard this year.
This expansion really puts Sony to shame as it was expected and of course its about making money.
Good work blizzard you will remain n1 for a while longer.

Being able to get level 70 in no time? Whats the point of the raised level cap then? Why not just add more tedious dungeons and gear grinds?
Powergamers are not the standard, so don't judge a game by how fast the powergamers can complete the content. The person who got to level 70 in 28 hours started at lvl 60 and he ground out in the best spots. So he didn't take advantage of all the new content and the new profession. I'd figure that the main WoW crowd won't be finished with all the content for probably 4-6 months.

Blizzard released a well polished expansion. That is more than any other company can say. Do you think it is worth the wait for a well polished game or expansion. Some of us do. But you are right, Blizzard could use some of that money to hire more staff to release expansions sooner. As I said in my above post, don't judge the game by how fast a powergamer can get to 70.

Okay, I ignored it the first post, but here you say it again. I play on Moon Guard, a RP server. One of the few MMORPG's that actually have a RP server at that, and that is coming from someone who has played almost every western and some eastern MMORPG's. There is a lot of RPing on that server and every other RPing server I have checked out in that game. So saying that it is not a RPG is idiotic.
Now in case you meant that it is not a RPG because of its lack of freedom, I ask you this. What games out there other than UO, Shadowbane, and Pre-NGE SWG actually offered any real freedom? In order to fully take advantage of DnD type RPG's, you need to be able to choose your own path. At the moment, only sand box MMORPG's can do that.
So in other words, WoW is just as close as any other EQ clone to being an RPG. I love player ran cities, and WoW doesn't have them. Now a person might say the game lacks RPG wise because it doesn't have player housing. Well, have you read many fantasy novels or watched many fantasy movies? The heroes and adventures almost always sleep in the inn or in the field. So if you RP, it is perfectly acceptable to stay at one of the many inns in WoW.
"Every class is the same as the other in the same class." We have all heard this argument before about WoW, with the exception of the talent trees. Now the talent trees actually offer you three or more different ways of playing the same class. Is that significant? Depends really. My first MMORPG was DAoC. So I like the idea if you're going to use a class/level system for your game, that you have the freedom to choose which spec you want. But at any rate, how many MMORPG's with a class/level based system had more than 1 or 2 viable specs? Now how is that so much different than WoW?
My point is that WoW, no matter how simple the game is to learn, is a RPG.

I think one reason WoW elicits such viceral hatred from some people on MMORPG.com is because this website is essentially geared towards the non-WoW niche MMORPGs. The players of these niche games recognize that WoW has mass market appeal, a large subscription base and a very large, and loyal, global community. I think to many of these people WoW's success is fundamentally threatening to them. The wide, seemingly unbridled popularity of WoW, not their game of choice, directly challenges their value sets. It tells them that the world favors something which they shun, it makes them question their judgement, their worldview and values. People don't like to have their values threatened or have the things they like passively, yet publicly, rebuked.
MMORPG.com is advertised as the forum for those seeking alternatives to WoW. This website specializes in 'other than WoW' content. That is a good thing. If not for MMORPG.com the market dominance of WoW would likely quash discussion of alternative games or relegate such discussion to small boards here and there run on fansites, nothing like what we see here. MMORPG.com in my opinion levels the playing field, a bit, by brining exposure to games in development, niche games, and the global MMORPG scene. Kudos to those who brought us MMORPG.com!
Having said that though, the MMORPG.com forums also provide a vehicle and forum for niche gamers, who feel threatened by WoW's success, to vent their emotions and to find mutual support from other niche gamers. This is essential to them. The ability to commune with others who share their dislike (or worse) for WoW diminishes their feelings of isolation and proves, to them, that their values are not aberrant, that they are the 'intelligent minority' of gamers out there who actually know the 'truth' about why WoW is so popular (vice their game(s) of choice) and why WoW is so bad for the genre... "It's too easy.... It's designed to be soloed... It's a grind fest... It's cartoonish... It can run on even average rigs... It's not a sandbox..." You've heard all the arguments, you've seen them throughout these forums, seemingly irregardless of which game's forum they appear in.
Unfortunately such discussions on these forums usually manifest themselves in the form of flaming. The post purposely designed to attack or otherwise assault another poster who may enjoy WoW or have posted something not condemning WoW. It seems that even posting statements not condemning WoW will get you branded a noob these days and flamed to the point of questioning the existence of forum moderators. People on these forums often say "live and let live" or "game and let game" when people start complaining about the games they are testing or eagerly awaiting to play like VGSoH or PotBS or AoC... When confronted with a challenge that the game is going to somehow not measure up to expectations they respond with, "Well maybe it doesn't appeal to you, so just don't play it and leave it to those of us who want to/like to play." I've seen this a bit on the VG forums as a response to a rash of negative comments from the most recent Beta phase. Well you know what, there's some truth to the "game and let game" philosophy. Let's try to apply that equally to all games, including WoW. We may not all agree on what is good or what is entertaining, as we are all individuals with specialized tastes and interests, but we should all be able to recognize what is can be considered fair play and civil when it comes to posts. Furthermore, if you really so dislike WoW, for whatever reasons, just be considerate of others who may enjoy the experience.
Show the maturity that some claim is lacking from the WoW player base and that is required to enjoy non-WoW games.

Don't get me wrong, I think SoE does a much better job at expansions and updates but you must be fair, fast leveling people exist in ALL games. Any group/guild can PL someone rapidly.
As a side note, most of the new content for WoW is at the end game anyway. Where as games like EQ2 has more through out the characters leveling.

Well, I'm new to WoW but I am enjoying myself. I have no idea what SOE is. It's not on the list to the left. In the real world, we are totally unaware that there is a difference of opinion about whether this is a MMO or a MMORPG or a BFWOT (big fat waste of time). I would NEVER have guessed that there are so many haters on both sides. Pretty amusing how worked up people can get about such insignificant things. But, I believe in freedom. Rage on, brothers! (And sisters.)
The article says, "... to become the fastest-selling PC game ever..."
Is TBC really a game? If I didn't have WoW, could I play TBC? It's not a game, it's an expansion to an existing game.
I absolutely support Blizzard and WoW, even though I dont play WoW anymore nad have no intentions of playing it or buying BC. All of you guys who keep flaming WoW - just because it doesnt fit YOUR playstyle, doesnt mean it cant fit everybody else's. And about the "WoW is for kids", personaly I dont agree, but... who cares? Just because a bunch of a 14 year olds enjoy this game doesnt mean that a bunch of 34 year olds cant either? Cmon people, you claim WoW is for kids and yet you behave just like those kids. Grow up people.
If anything, you should be GLAD Blizzard made WoW becuase WoW introduced MILLIONS of new people to the MMORPG genre. If all we had was EQ1, how many years would it take to grow beyond 5 million mark? It doesnt matter that WoW is simple to start, it doesnt matter that it has bright graphics everyone hates so much, it doesnt matter that PvP is meaningless from strategic point of view and it doesnt matter then u can level to 70 in a few days. What matters is that the game is FUN and it draws in NEW people to this genre. And God forbit someone might enjoy this game, thats so impossible becuase YOU dont like it. No wonder trolls are KOS with pretty much every other intelligent beings.
PS: this post is not directed towards people with valid criticism and constructive arguments. This post was directed towards children with uncontrollable urge to post single line posts with "l337" comments like "WoW suxorz becuase i dont like it".
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Well the sales record must of been broken elsewhere since it didn't sell well here. I asked the local Gamestop clerk how many preorders he had: Zero, Nil, Nada. Also asked how many showed up for the midnite release: Two!
Supposedly 8 million subscribers but only about 20% of them bought the expansion? That doesn't seem like something I'd be proud of.

As was already pointed out, that 20% is just a first day sales. I know many folks in the guild I'm in were not able to pre-order or make it to the store to buy on the first day.
As for midnight releases, sure if I was up and about at midnight I might have stopped by but with two Best Buy's, two Circuit City's, and many Wal-Mart's within driving distance of my house why bother? I'll just pick it up in the afternoon on my lunch break (which I did at the first Best Buy I hit).
All in all, I'm impressed with TBC. Nice content, outstanding scenery in the new areas, and the grind from 60 to 70 is just as long as I figured it would be. Since the release I've managed to get my toon up to level 65. The PvP'ing opportunities in the new zones will make for a nice diversion from the quest grinding at times as well.
However, once I hit 70 and get bored with PvP (again) it'll probably be time to see if Vanguard has worked out their issues and try that one out.
Well the point I was trying to make sgtcasey is that other MMOG's usually have a higher percentage of their subscribers buying their expansions. Not that their sales are trivial or anything, far from it. Even had they "only" sold 1 million copies, multiply that by $40 and that is still an impressive sales figure.
The low percentage could be due to the sheer numbers of subscribers as well. While most games run in the 100-300k range, WoW's 8+ million pretty much puts them in their own category.
burning crusade was just what i thought it would be, more of the same.
it'll be interesting to see what will happen to the game with it's best designers gone... i'm sure everyone knows alot of blizzard employees who actually did the majority of the work on wow left to form their own studio after the game released... red 5 was it?
i doubt blizzard has the skill to change the formula, because the peeps who created the first formula left.
anyone who watched the collectors edition dvd's noticed that it's all new people, and that's because the old people are long gone
--people who believe in abstinence are unsurprisingly also some of the ugliest most sexually undesired people in the world.--
I like how the original article refers to it as the "Bruning" Crusade. I'm guessing spell-checking or proof-reading isn't in the author's chosen talent tree.

And again, the sales the article talks about is only the *first day* sales. There will be more copies of the game sold as time goes on. Like I said, I know of many folks who didn't buy the expansion because they were not able to get to the store that day or they might not have been level 58 so unable to take advantage of it yet.
Funny, the only reason I started lurking around the mmorpg.com forums last night was because I was bored with WoW. :P
WoW has it's place, though and I've sunk a bit of time doing the grinding or simply hanging out with guildies. I think in the long-run though I'm just waiting for something better to come along. *sigh*

TBC was only realsed in europe and n.america (no relase date for asia yet) the previous press release said ~ 3million in europe+n.america so 2.4million of the 3 million able to buy the expansion bought it.....
......so thats around 75% of player bought the expansion within 24 hours of release.

Well Blizzard and other gaming company cannot include "real lives" with their expansions, thus people without one will powergrind to make up for their lack of one. I think they're working on it adding it for the next expansion though.

World of Warcraft is to MMORPGS what Dungeons&Dragons is to Pen&Paper RPGs.
The most known/played/advertised one by far, despite its average quality.
When you say "at least Wow made MMORPGs to be known", i'm thinking "meh, there's no way the MMORPG market will evolve in the right direction".

As a side note, most of the new content for WoW is at the end game anyway. Where as games like EQ2 has more through out the characters leveling.

And have been waiting for PotBS for 5 years
Well, I'm new to WoW but I am enjoying myself.
Sean

I'm not afraid to admit ....cause you made a good point here
See thats what i like about forums, everyone can have a opinion, argue's other opinions, i mean if people couldn't have discussions about things they care or not care about what would be the use of having a opinion
The sad thing is that EoF for EQ2 puts BC to shame yet Blizzard has a ton more money to invest in making a quality, fleshed out product.
Dave
Well the point I was trying to make sgtcasey is that other MMOG's usually have a higher percentage of their subscribers buying their expansions. Not that their sales are trivial or anything, far from it. Even had they "only" sold 1 million copies, multiply that by $40 and that is still an impressive sales figure.
The low percentage could be due to the sheer numbers of subscribers as well. While most games run in the 100-300k range, WoW's 8+ million pretty much puts them in their own category.
it'll be interesting to see what will happen to the game with it's best designers gone... i'm sure everyone knows alot of blizzard employees who actually did the majority of the work on wow left to form their own studio after the game released... red 5 was it?
i doubt blizzard has the skill to change the formula, because the peeps who created the first formula left.
anyone who watched the collectors edition dvd's noticed that it's all new people, and that's because the old people are long gone
--people who believe in abstinence are unsurprisingly also some of the ugliest most sexually undesired people in the world.--
And again, the sales the article talks about is only the *first day* sales.
*sigh*
Dave
......so thats around 75% of player bought the expansion within 24 hours of release.
Well Blizzard and other gaming company cannot include "real lives" with their expansions, thus people without one will powergrind to make up for their lack of one. I think they're working on it adding it for the next expansion though.
