I just wanted to know why we all do this, could it be for fun, cus we're addicted or could it be some innate behavior.
Another thing, why do more guys play than girls? You could say that girls have social lives and such, but i know of many guys that also have social lives...

Bartle explains all... and if bartle doesn't Yee will

If you not really interested in the sociology of it and are just trying to make conversation.
A: because achievement is fun. When in life do you get to fly a starship or kill a dragon? MMORPG are hobbies, they are for entertainment. When they stop being entertaining people move on. (but not before posting some flames about the game they lost interest in)
B: fewer woman play MMORPG's because most are achievement based. Woman are generally (<- generally, not always) more interested in the social aspects of the game, it also gets more complatcated since a average woman that plays a MMORPG also needs to beleive that on-line relationships are equal to life relationships. Not all do. Hence the lower than average female game playing population.
I supect over time this changing, and in about 10 years the number of men vs women that play a MMORPG will be about equal. Although the ratio will vary widly depending on the game.

Make no mistake, MMORPG's are not games, they are hobbies. If you have a job, you'll need to give up watching TV in order to play one. You'll be better off for it.

Achievers realise that killers as a concept are necessary in order to make achievement meaningful and worthwhile (there being no way to "lose" the game if any fool can "win" just by plodding slowly unchallenged). -bartle

You may be right, but I would say that the ratio of women who play MMOGs is drastically higher than the ratio of women who play computer games in general, not to mention the ratio of women in other specific genres (FPS, Simulation, Sports, RTS). If anything, this genre has a non-proportional number of women playing specifically because of the social side of it. The persistent nature of MMOGs fosters a social climate, and this is why, IMO, women can be found in much greater numbers here than in other genres (such as the aforementioned).
As far as the ratio becoming more balanced, I think it will depend on the evolution of the genre. If more achievement based games become popular, the share of women will probably remain flat. If games that emphasize the social side flourish, then women will probably become more common. There's a bit of a chicken and egg thing here, i.e. if more women play, then the game succeeds, which provides a larger social aspect which attracts more women, etc.
I think we'll see a divide in the future, where MMOGs spilt into achievement and social games, both maintaining the other aspect, but a heavier emphasis will be put upon the primary characteristic. In other words, we may, in the future, be discussing MMORPGs versus Social Sims (or some other moniker).

"Why do we all play mmorpgs?"
Hell if I know...cause real life social interaction is so damn boring...but then agian camping a dungeon spot for 8 hours, waiting fo the next piece of "uber" gear to drop, may not be what it used to be anymore....or maybe it's just me...Xaldor
i believe its mostly because of it being more social.there are many regular rpg's that are "fun", but arent really socially centric, and whats more socially centric than playing a role thats not you in a masively multiplayer world with thousands of other players with the same goal? i suppose economy building might be a draw for some to more complex mmo's as well. fun cant be the only reason though.

We all play MMORPGs because they are fun and addicting. Also because you meet ppl on these games more than on regular internet FPSs and after a while FPSs get very very boring just like the 100 ive prob been through.
Ohh and nice sig progner lol
I play mmorpg games because it offers more then just a regular game that you can finish in 2 maybe 3 weeks. I gets better when you play it more and you get some new content a few times a year.
i like the communitys (those that i have been in) and guilds so that while i am playing i can "speak" to others talking about everything from politics to crap .
i like some FPS too but you don't get the same group feeling like in a mmorpg. i also like the fantasy genre the most.
last but not least, Like most already said, it is FUN
One day all will die, surely you but never I.

I like it because theres so many people online to chat to. Most people think "well you can do that in real life too" not when 10 of your friends are fighting a dragon together or completing an epic quest for treasure .
It's not like one of those single player games you beat in a week and then ask for your money back either, heh.
Speaking of MMo's, i think im gonna go play one now .

I play for many reasons. To relax, let go of some pent up aggression (PvP), socialise online, profit from ingame trading, outsourcing sometimes aswell .... i also contemplate the fact i have no social life outside... Hmmm

These games are the only way a lot of guys feel that they can innately leave their mark on society. This is why it's such a strong majority of a community. Just like RPGs. I myself play MMORPGs for the fact that people look at me and aspire to be just like myself "In Game" and it feels GOOD to know that someone does. I feel that's a big reason as to why a lot of people play these games.

thats a very good point. i remember the first time someone of a lower level (reaver) said to me that they wanted to be just like me, wanted my exact steps as to how i got to where i was. i wasnt even level 50 yet, so i was still looking up to others. as sad as it may sound, it felt really good.

Well, I always play computer games.
Why would I prefer a MMORPG over a basic game, easier to find groups and...easy to COMPARE and work on achieve more and getting info and all (bad bad me, I am a cooperative competitor if such a thing can exist).
Do I prefer to be the best soloer and show my ubah toon(in a non-aggresive way, lot and lot of bragging on soloing the Diaku Supplier pre-LDoN)) or do I prefer to group with folks, I dont know, I really do like both of them.
--- Grouping with folks is fun and easy.
--- Kind and cooperative competition is fun! (you can easily understand why I lose interest if raiders get all and I dont raid). I would always HELP or IGNORE another player, I will never willingly hamper them, as instead of hampering them I should work on my toon and IMPROVE myself before a third party gain more ground! Yes, I come in awfully rude bitter clash with any PvP stuff, as I would just want to ignore them and be ignored! (usually help, but ignore in the case of someone I distate or that I feel to involve in *beating*, and this is purely selfish, helping improve competition, which I am craving for...)
MMORPGs have both!
Group and competition are there! All I need!
