I agree with the one of the above posters about the CPU. Dual core simply isn't as good for gaming. I can think of only one game that properly utilizes both cores (and it's faster with single core anyway). In the future, yes, but Vanguard isn't one of those games. Vanguard will enjoy more processing power from a 4200 single core than the latest multicore processors out there.
Dual core is amazing for productivity and multitasking, or for games that specifically support it. Not for single-process games like Vanguard. Vanguard doesn't support multicore. You'll get faster framerates with dedicated single-core processors. And you'll find this in 99% of DX9 applications.
Geez dude. Stop posting such BS. When you don't know what you are talking about don't post. It's obvious you have never used a dual core, why do you post about something you have no idea about ?
Search the web or wikipedia to educate yourself. Both cores are used. The game is not optimized for dual cores yet, but this does not mean that both cores will not be used.
When I run the game on only 1 core I lose 5 to 10 FPS. And it also often starts to hitch, when this happens the FPS drops down to 3fps. This is the same hitching problem single core users have been posting about all over these forums. This never happens when I have both cores enabled. With both cores it does not hitch and never drops below 20fps on my system.
Furthermore, all over these forums here, and also on the VG beta forums during months it has been known that the people with the most hitching problems were running single core CPUs.
Please stop misleading people with wrong information.
Edit: do you really believe that a game as huge as VG is using only 1 thread ? Do you know the difference between a process and a thread ? That's the most funny post I have seen today.
I have a simular computer to the op. I normally get 25 fps on balanced or high. The only time my fps dip is when its trying to load up from the hard drive. Which is normally in large towns will loads of textures and npc / players.
Btw i dont care what anyone thinks about this, You wont be able to see more than 40 fps so 100 is pointless. It's the hitching thats the problem. For me hitching is coursed by the hard drive. It's probally the same with you.
I think once ppl get vista, dx 10 and 4gb of ram. there wont be any (at all) performance problems.
For me vg only ever runs on one core. Is there a way to optimise it so it runs on 2? I also thought its impossble for vanguard to run on two cores as most the information is connected in someway, so it has to stay on one core.
Again, if it was smooth, I wouldn't even question it. Problem is that it's not smooth at all. And whether or not I need the 100 fps isn't really my point. I'm concerned that on a setup like this, I'm only getting 5-15 more FPS than on the old set up. The new setup should be leaving the old one in the dust. Something just isn't adding up.
Is there a memory leak in the game? That might be part of the problem.
Its the game not anyone's system. Just change the REZ 1024 -1650 and fps dont change much at all. The game is not SMOOTH for anyone. Can anyone say EQ2?
PLEASE people..... DO NOT buy hardware for this game. The engine is simply totally broken at this point. You can tell very easily from the TYPES of problems people experience. It isnt a framerate issue, its the pausing/chunking/stuttering anytime there is a texture load. Sigil is BANKING on ignorant misinformation keeping peoples wheels spinning a while as they replace their whole PC.
Just look on the official forums at the guidance on 'random crashes'. They have the audacity to say "disgard your router". Next it will be, drive to your nearest backbone provider and plug directly into a backbone switch. They are stalling b/c they know the game is broken.
Anyone claiming CONSISTENT FPS (like the guy on this thread), I need to see real proof (like a video of you running in and out of cities with the frame counter on), or I call total BS and, probably, fanatic fanboy in holy defense mode. There are THOUSANDS of posts on the official site now with people having the same issues. Most of the idiot time wasting "buy new power supply, turn PC to face the East, clean out your attic first (crazy, but it worked!), change the oil in your car" etc etc is now over and most people are now just accepting that the game has a deep flaw. The Unreal 2.5 engine has issues with modern hardware as it is, and Sigil went and TWEAKED it. I doubt they'll EVER unravel the mess as Epic is moving on and they prob have no clue what the hell they did towards the end as they RUSHED it out the door.
People can hope and pray and wait for fixes (ahem EQ2), but Im going to be that they will NOT be forthcoming. A "fix" would need to be a "rewrite" of the rendering code.

Bigmango you should go do some reading cause Recant is right and your full of BS
VG is not am MMO, its trick by Nvidia and ATI to fool people into upgrading ther video cards.
I am no fanbois, but Nvidia sponsors so many games and ATI only does little. In reality, it's all about marketing and there are only a few "good mens" who create and develop good games, they don't put Nvidia or ATI marketing ploy ahead of people lives, instead, they harness both graphic cards to its full potential (ATI and NVIDIA), hell, even Nvidia demos kick ass and it's even better than Vanguard, without any performance drop, regardless of your memory or CPU rating - it matters only on your card. I just love seeing the full potential out of these cards by displaying those demos that Nvidia and ATI made, seperately of course.

There are obviously many kids on these forums. There is no point in arguing with teenagers. Grow up first then we can talk again.
And get yourself educated, learn the difference between a process and a thread.
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. As for the game, go to the archived beta forums if you have access and learn about the problems of this game, and how it works ona single core and dual core systems. There have been discussions for months about this.
As for these forums here, search for the posts of all these people with dual cores and the G15 keyboard that monitors CPU activity in real time, and you will see that both cores are used. But anyway, this is only pure logic and this game OBVIOUSLY uses more than 1 thread.
Another suggestion I would give you would be to first use a dual core at least once in your life. It's obvious you have never used a dual core, so stop being ridiculous.

Stop trolling.
Once you grow up you will learn that you are not alone in this world and if something does not work for you it this does not mean that it does not work for everyone else.
As I have posted above this game runs good for me (my card will soon be 2 years old (x1900xt-512), but I am fortunately running a core2duo). Many people have posted that even on systems with lower end cards like the ati x1300 it runs fine (but then at balanced settings).
Yes many people have problems. There are performance problems with this game when using older computers and also higher end systems with some hardware combinations like the nv8800 (sometimes).
Geez If we could not play this game we would still be posting that it is running smooth for us ? Stop being an idiot.
To the OP : many people have reported problems with the nv8800. So there is probably something wrong with the nv drivers or with how the game works with this cardin certain situations.
For me vg only ever runs on one core. Is there a way to optimise it so it runs on 2? I also thought its impossble for vanguard to run on two cores as most the information is connected in someway, so it has to stay on one core.
The game should run on both cores by default if you have dual core.
If you want to make it run on only 1 core open the task manager, right click on the game process and set the affinity to only 1 core. You can also check this to see if both cores are enabled for this process.
But if you are certain that the game does not run on both cores, what CPU are you using ? Because on core2duos it runs on both cores by default.
Once the game is optimized for dual cores it will run even better.
I agree with the one of the above posters about the CPU. Dual core simply isn't as good for gaming. I can think of only one game that properly utilizes both cores (and it's faster with single core anyway). In the future, yes, but Vanguard isn't one of those games. In response to your edit - hehe yah I guess VG would use a "little" multi-threading. But is that how duel core works? I have not done any reading on it but logically would think that unless programatically the developers instruct the application which cpu to run a new thread on - the system will simply run the new thread on the cpu with the least work?
edit: which may or may not be on the same cpu as the thread that created it. hence showing a need for optimization by design and not trusting system default in future games using duel-core

Yes you are right on the ball here
The game is not optimized for dual core yet, some threads are using more load, so we see at some times some more load on one of the cores. Once it is optimized we should see full load on both cores most of the time.
Again, if it was smooth, I wouldn't even question it. Problem is that it's not smooth at all. And whether or not I need the 100 fps isn't really my point. Yes during the past months many people have experienced memory leaks with this game. Many have reported that they crash after 30 minutes to 2 hours after the memory fills up. But even with this problem the OP should at least see good FPS at the beginning.
There might also be some problem or leak with the nv drivers with this game when using this card.
Okay, so I was playing VG with this Setup: 2.2 ghz AMD 4200+ 2 Gigs Ram 7600GS NVidia I was getting around 15-20 FPS on Balanced. So, I decided to upgrade. I built a whole new system last night consisting of: MSI P965 NEO Motherboard Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 ghz w 4 meg L2 Cache Strider 600W 4 Rail Powersupply PNY Nvidia 8800 GTX Performance Series 2 Megs Dual Channel DDR Ram Sound Blaster Audigy 24 bit Soundcard 160 GB Segate SATA II HD Windows XP Pro I log in and on Balanced, I'm bouncing between 27-31ish FPS on freaking balanced out of town. I have read here about people hitting 100 FPS in the wild, but I'm not seeing it. So, if any of you have a comparable system to mine, how are you getting better frame rates? What's the secret? Is anyone really hitting 80-100 FPS or are they just blowing smoke?
HI My computer:
Nvidia 680i Motherboard
Intel core 2 duo E6400
Gefore 8800GTS
2GB 667mzh ram (OZ)
X-fi XtremeMusic sound card
I don't know what your problem is but i have game on highest quality @ 1680x1050 resolution with almost everything else also turned on or on highest and i get average of 45 FPS outdoors and 25-30 in city. and sometimes I do reach 80-100 FPS in the occasional outdoor area with no fighting.
and this is on highest quality. My video card is smaller than yours as well as my prossecor... i dunno what the problem is with that lol.
I do know that My motherboard has a faster FSB though... dunno how much that helps...
Current MMO of interest: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes MMO background: EQ, UO, AO, SWG, PS, EQ2, L2,EQoA, WoW, WWIIO, and AC2

OH PLEASE. I run Vanguard on my TANDY 1000 with 80 FPS. The game is fine and runs great on any computer, which is obvious because they released it! You are clearly just trolling go back to WoW.

Lol nothing worse than someone who thinks they know it all , when in fact they dont know anything, where you getting your facts bigmango Your wrong only a few games right now take advantage of Dual core and vanguard isnt one of them In fact i dont think any have even came out yet that do but this year maybe
I stand by mt post Recant is right your wrong ,Am not some kid am 43 and retired and just had my two friends that own there own computer shop build my system. theve been playing MMO's and building and benchmarking computers since they came out Thank god they dont rip me off cause i can afford any computer out there right now but they dont let me waste my money Yes i have AMD X2 4800 in my computer but i could have put a Core 2 extreme in there like wanted but guess what i only play games and they wouldnt let me cause its a waste of money for the average gamer At least for now it is in the future all games will take advantage of dual core and quad core
DX9 applications on Windows XP will always run a single-process application faster with a single core processor of equivalent price than a dual core processor.
This is not supposition, this pure fact. Your hyperthreading can do a good job at using both cores, but at the end of the day, single core for gaming is still the way to go.
No amount of denial is going to change this 100% pure fact. Feel free to argue till your faces are blue. I'm not going to bother arguing things like this. It's like arguing that the ocean isn't wet.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Could you elaborate some? Seriously, I have no clue either way and I've got no way other than a coin flip to decide which who's unbacked story is correct. Care to give any references?
First off I love this game. that being said it doesn't take a computer whiz to see that this game has performance issues. There are to many people running the game on a multitude of setups on multiple different settings ingame that are having the performance issues. Hopefully they can optimize the game some more or just figure out in general what the probblem is.

I'm so sorry for you. Because you "think" something is true it does not necessarily mean it is reality.
Nice to hear you know better than the dozens of people with Logitech G15 keyboards that monitor CPU activity who have posted all over confirming the game is using both cores. AGAIN because the game is not optimized to use both cores does not mean it will not use them.
It's also nice to hear that you know better than the Vangard developers themselves, who have posted several times about this on the Vanguard beta forums.
Furthermore, instead of trolling around like you do, I have posted hard facts a few posts above, showing how the game is running FPS wise on 1 core and 2 cores, and how people are getting the hitching problems more with single core CPUs.
It is always so funny to hear how some Joe Forumdude knows it better than the developers who have worked on the game.
You guys are a real pain. If you don't know, don't post.

I have posted facts, you are trolling with things you do not understand. Regarding directx9 yes, but this is not only directx9, it is a complete game which is more than "just" directx (other components, speedtree, etc...), you also need to take into account the type of CPU; current CPUs are the next generation, you are talking about CPUs that are 1 generation older (single core2 cpus are faster than your older generation cpu, I have posted FPS with 1 and 2 cores a few posts above), etc... etc... I don't have the time to make a course for you now, sorry. As I said search the web and educate yourself.

What I have posted above also goes for you:

Edit: I also see what you are posting about hyperthreading. This just shows that you don't even know the difference between hyperthreading and a dual core CPU. It will certainly surprise you to learn that there are dual cores that do not support hyperthreading (P4D 805 for example). Anyway I won't waste anymore time here, this is just nonsense.

This never happens when both cores are enabled.
Bigmango you should go do some reading cause Recant is right and your full of BS

^^ What BigMango said.
So there is probably something wrong with the nv drivers or with how the game works with this card in certain situations.

The game is not optimized for dual core yet, some threads are using more load, so we see at some times some more load on one of the cores. Once it is optimized we should see full load on both cores most of the time.
Is there a memory leak in the game? That might be part of the problem.

Sorry for posting off-topic. Also tell me to shut up for prying.

No signature, I don't have a pen

What I have posted above also goes for you:
I'm so sorry for you. Because you "think" something is true it does not necessarily mean it is reality.
