From a purely personal point of view, the two i find the strongest on their own are the Shamen and Rogue.

Shamen are very strong (even hitting 2-5 levels above their own weight from early on), very well protected by armor and can heal while dealing great amounts of damage at the same time.

Rogues on the other hand rely on speed, surprise and poisons to deal great amounts of damage, whilst using their agility and skills to dodge the damage to them. Rogues also have multiple escape skills (Vanish, Blind, Sprint)to get away if things get too hot.

At higher levels there are other classes that will do just as well on their own like Warlocks and Mages, but if you are looking for characters that can do it all the way through, the top two would be my personal recommendations.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Got to be hunter, at lvl 8 you get to tame pets (almost all animals in the game) such an owl, cat, bear, boar, goriller, raptors, giant bird... and so on.

These pets are more or less the same in stats (over the last 2 years blizz have made all pet stats more or less the same) its more down to what pet you want to have, although pet families do have unique skills, like boars get charge, cats get stealth etc  you can also boost your pet by spending training points and increasing their health, armour and spell resistances.

The pets are used almost like a 2nd player, used to pin and enemy while you attack from range, with a pet you can do things other classes cant, you can solo mobs others can only dream of.

For me Hunter is the most fun and most diverse class. But watch it my pet Boris is more known than me on my server/guild :p

Heres a video me *hunter lvl 60* soloing a boss (and the trash mobs) in a 5man lvl 60 dungeon (no other class can solo this guy) www.youtube.com/watch Soloing rattlegore is kinda like a rights of passage for most lvl 60 hunters.

Warlocks pwn solo. No problem at all to go complete quests and kill mobs 3-4 higher levels constantly.

    WOW,eq2,Vanguard,WAR,LOTRO,AOC,Rift Aion, SWTOR, TERA.

    Currently playing GW2.

Hunter for sure is the best when ure solo at lower levels , though at higher levels the Warlock has about the same downtime but is more fun and does more dps...

I don't know much about hunters but the downtime on warlocks can be minimized. Don't drink just soultap, bandage and heal pet during combat. Probably some hunter pets are better tanks though.

Just my oppinion on the matter:

    1) Hunter: As everyone else above has said, probably one of (if not THE) best solo classes in game. With mid to high end damage, pets to tank for you, range, leather and then mail amor at level 40, all of this makes the hunter a great calss to solo with and have lots of fun with.

Some of the cons: A little weak in PvP due to the killzone (which is anywhere inside the ranged dmg distance the hunter can hit you with), Theres tons and tons of them on just about every server and 41 point talents are a little weak.

    2) Warlock: Again the mix of a pet class and high damage does well to solo with, no surprise there right? A large selection of pets make the "Lock" a really great class to both solo and group with. In a solo situation you can act very much like a hunter, letting your void walker demon tank for you as you dish out the damage and in a group situation you can switch to a Sucubus for crowd  control or an Imp for more damage. It's all up to you.

Some of the cons: While Locks do have the most HP (hit points) of any of the casters, it's still a clothy which in turn means your squishy. That isn't to say they suffer in pvp because of it, they are actually quite good in pvp, but it's something to keep an eye on.

    3) Mages: I know it's not the class anyone thinks about being a good solo'ist, but they really are. A frost mage can do lots of damage, has amazing crowd control and can get out of almost any situation alive and well. With food and water spells, mana regen spells, your downtime is kept to a minimum and your a force to reckoned with in almost any group situation.

Some of the cons: Squishy, squishy and even more squishy. Your just squishy, hunters will one shot you, warriors will try and warlocks will quite often laugh at you when they bolt you have your HP... well they'll laugh untill you crit them with a frostbolt, then they shut up pretty quick :). Lack of escape spells means that alot of the time, your kinda just left out to dry, it's one of those things you just get used to.

    Final notes:

Rogues are good too but I really don't know enough about them to say anything intelligent, although from friends I've spoken with all say they level fast and solo easy. Here's the thing though, almost all classes in WoW solo relatively well, it's only the speed at which they do so that varies widly.

This is is so because the designers made the game this way, it's supposed to be easy to solo. So I would suggest that while you of course pick a class that will go along with your playing habbits, also pick a class that interests you on several levels, especially if you want to be playing over the long haul.

Any class can solo well in WoW, really.

If it's less downtime you're looking for, then choose Hunter like everyone else.  Around 25-30% of the total game population consists of hunters precisely because it is the easiest class to play well solo with the least downtime.  Honestly I find them kind of boring to play, but it gets the job done if you're looking for the easiest class to level.

Well maybe ppl will call me a noob for saying this but i think the druid is a pretty good solo class.

As a druid in cat form you'll be able to DPS almost as good as any rogue and you spend like 4 seconds and be ready for another fight (druid form, healing touch, back into cat form). This way you can EASLY kill groups of monsters 2-3lvls above you very fast!

Druids are also EXCELENT escape artists due to high speed in cat form (trough talents), dash, prowl, travel form, aquatic form, and  2 quick self-heals.

Ofcourse u wont be lvling as fast as warlock or hunter but if you are looking for something different tht you can lvl up very quicly if used on the correct way druid might be the class for you

If you are starting and want to get an easy to lvl character which perform well in raid DPS and PvP, I'd say you want a hunter or a warlock!  They are, at this moment, the 2 most overpowered classes in WoW.  Marksmen hunter and Affliction Warlock are 2 of the best DPS + they for more range then other classes.  Then again the both have pets///demons  to help them to keep their ennemi far from them while questing or grinding mobs! If you have any question on the talent builds I might post my hunter and warlock ones on this forum later tonight!

Theres a reason the bot scum use hunters, their so easy to play even a dumb script can do it.  So hunter if you want easy...

If you want something more advanced that you can't play while semi-afk; try shaman, rogue, druid, priest or warrior (warrior probably being the hardest because of the demand on them in groups, and their crappyness in pvp).

hunters are the best for soloing because of one ability, feign death.  Combine that with having a pet and ranged damage and then you got the tools to do stuff like solo bosses and such.  If warlocks could feign death they would unquestionably be the best class in the game... for soloing.

Shamans suck for soloing unless you have a bag full of mage water, then they kick ass.  One thing I noticed with a shaman though is you kind of have to respec for certain strategies, burst damage is one spec, ranged damage is another, survivability is another.  It's like the talents make you what you are as opposed to improving what you can already do like most other classes.  Maybe a paladin is the same way I don't know.  For me farming gold was easier with a melee/resto spec so I could have uninterruptable heals and then melee stuff to death, with mana damage i'd run out of mana too fast and not be able to heal out of a bad situation (2 enraged scarlet myrmadans or whatever with no mana isn't cool, but with melee/resto style you have mana to spare, a lot longer fights though)

Warriors are alright for grinding (green mobs) and such because they arn't mana dependant, and a rogue in the same way cause the energy recharge is good enough for soloing.  My warrior was in all blues and I could grind on the dragonkin in azshara and burning steppes by using sunder x5 and devastate.

Mages can get you a lot of exp/hour, but 70% of the time you're drinking so it seems slow, even though it's not.

actually any class with mana can kick ass soloing if you have a lot of water (not sure about the paladin though, never played one, alliance sucks and I quit right before BC)

i never got a druid past lvl 27, but they're pretty fun to play.

Hunter, although I hated being the ezmode class after some patches, gotta say is a good solable class..

You can also go for a lock (Which in mho is the best to solo), you'll be able to take enemies 4-5 levels above yours..

Let me warn you, warlocks are "thought" to be overpowered, so you might suffer a nerf

    So to summarize, either Hunter/Warlock

I pretty much solo'd to 60 a Pally, Mage, Lock, Druid, & Priest and they were all pretty much the same...and I had no difficulty in the upper levels except with the Pally...he couldn't be killed...but took him forever to kill anything.... so it was slow leveling towards the end  w/o a group.

and then I quit to avoid more of the same in BC

    Agree 100%

Rogue probably 2nd easiest followed by druid 3rd, then warlock 4th in my opinion....

however, it's all about knowing how to play your character.. i leveled a warrior to 60 in about 3 weeks playing nights/ weekends playing mostly (85-90%) solo...

I would say the Hunter or the Rogue, and maybe the Warrior!!

    Hunter

Altho Druid can solo alot of elites with ease

I would say rogue, myself.  I got to 60 doing a lot of soloing compared to other people, but that was a while ago.

    Hunters. Easy class to play.

  • AntipathyAntipathy Member UncommonPosts: 1,362
All classes in WoW can solo. However some are easier than others. Here's my view:

    Easy classes to solo:

Hunter (beast-master spec is good for soloing)

    Warlock (especially affliction spec)

    Feral specced druid

    Rogue

    Medium soloing:

Shadow priest (possibly easy, not sure)

    Arms or fury specced warrior

    Mage

    Retribution specced paladin

    Shaman

    Relatively hard soloing:

    Holy specced priest

    Prot warrior

    Restoration specced druid

    Holy specced paladin

Out of the above classes, hunter is probably the easiest for a beginner to solo with, but could cause you problems if you later decide to join a group. Playing a good hunter who can contribute to a group is difficult due to the variety of group roles you may have to perform  (pulling + healer protection + crowd control + dps). I should also warn you that hunters are probably the weakest class around level 8-9. The ability to acquire a pet at level 10 makes a huge difference (don't worry - these levels pass quickly).

For a class that solo's reasonably well and is also easy for a beginner to play in a group I'd recommend rogue or mage.

I believe aggro generation is broadly similar between hunter pets and voidwalkers. Maybe the voidwalker holds aggro better on groups whilst the hunter pet is better at single target aggro. However any pet (even a dps pet) from a beastmaster specced hunter can take alot more damage before it dies than a voidwalker can.

I know from experience. A while back my priest used to regularly adventure with a warlock who insisted on taking a void walker to dungeons (most warlocks use imps or succubi in instances). Worked ok until Maraudon, when the void-walker started taking damage at an astonishing rate. Far too fast for my reflexes to heal. Keeping the hunter's cat and the dps warrior standing was hard but doable.

I disagree - I've played both and a resto (healing) specced druid solos alot worse than a holy priest
