    I didn't read this whole thread, but I loved the first page;

Posters discussing a review they could not read about a game that could not be played.

    Classic.

Reasons why the review is not credible:

    - He complains about the size of the game. it's an MMO, and a new one at that. Vanguard is a huge world with lots of stuff in it. That stuff has to be on your hard drive somewhere.

    - He then complains about having to make room on his hard drive. That has absolutely nothing to do with Vanguard, and he'd already complained about the size.

    - He then complains about the time it took to install. Is this guy new or something? He's still on the same topic, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the game. It's a big game, get over it.

    - He couldn't get the game to install, hard to tell if that's the game's fault or his.

    - His "account problems" sound like he just screwed it up. He tried to do some free gift thing from a 3rd party instead of just installing and using the CD key he was given.

-He says he was expecting immediate charges to his credit card, when he should have known that wouldn't happen.

    - He just gives up and smashes the game. If he was a credible journalist, he wouldn't have had a temper tantrum like a small child. He would have gotten the issues sorted out and trudged on. Sounds like someone doesn't want to work too hard.

I didn't even get to finish the article cause it looks like it was removed.

His review highlights the exact problems a first time player or non techie would have with the game, and as such is fair.

Never saw any vanguard retail boxes saying that you need to have 5+ years with computer hardware and driver debugging experience to play this game!

Actually it is completely unfair considering that a PR DID in fact e-mail him back with a solution... they were obviously just under the impression that he was actually a professional reviewer and not some noob playing his first MMO. They no doubt would have given a more user friendly reply to the average customer!

And PS i think they did indeed take the review down, probably resulting from the comments they got from their readers...... and i fully agree, that "review" wasnt worth hosting. If the guy can't install a game and register an account (which are both pretty standard procedures in vanguards case) then he shouldn't be reviewing games IMHO.

Damn, I missed that review, its gone.

In this thread I think it brings out one of the main problems with Vanguard. The system specs are to high. I ran it OK on my system throughout beta but it still requires a pretty beefy system.

Expecting gamers who may only have an interest in the game to run out and possibly drop several hundred dollars on hardware upgrades just to give it a try seems unrealistic. Especially in light of its lukewarm reception by the industry. I am completely on the side of the consumer on this. I'm all for improved graphics and all that but like EQII at its launch, its system requirements are to high and they did a poor job of getting that info out.

The minimum requirements printed on the box are not going to realisticaly work. Not unless you don't mind playing a power point presentation. They really need to revise that.

This game could be very good, I just wish they didn't shove it out the door half baked. I hate to say it but its going to suffer for it in reviews.

So the person that wrote the review didn't even play the game? Holy crap, in all my life I have never heard of such a thing. That is just plain ridiculous. Has he been crucified yet? Lmao, whoo boy, I bet there's already Vanguard fans at his house now ready to burn him at the stake. Such a shame.

I also agree that this person must be some kind of computer novice or something.

Computers get better everytime you leave the computershop with your new rig - nothing new here.

A newly game deveoped for the CURRENT computers t release is a progressing automatically since computer progress on a daily base.

That is a different from developing computer games for a generation of computers simply not available. Besides Vanguard isnt really targetting uber-computers, its simply bad designed and "unoptimized".

Your "logic" is the big "no no" many make:
The first impression is the most important one.

Get out a game not running smooth on the most machines and you will face a shitload of complaints, rants and flames - exactly what happens here. Such badmouting and ultrabad reviews are simply KILLING a product, and it is very very hard to get rid of that again...

This is a basic-economy knowledge, no need to be a rocket scientist to know that.

YOu can talk it nice all day and night, but the fact wont change:
    1.
The majority of customers have HUGE problems running Vanguard.
It is TOTALLY irrelevant why, relevant is THAT it is this way - cause this is causing the big problems for Vanguard and its sales.

No1 cares if you need a 7900 or 8800 or a flying toaster to run it.
Important is that it isnt running smooth on most computers, that the servers are crashing constantly, that people cant login since days (weeks?), that serverboundarys are causing freezes, etc etc etc.

Its your personal problem if you are ignorant.

But this is only a fantasygame - but no fantasyforum.

    BTW:
Im running a good computer, but this isnt affecting the serverside and clientcode problems in any way. They are present till fixed, no matter what uber-super machine you are running.

The fact stands that he claims to be a professional journalist, but after the game gives him a bit of trouble (and I've seen computer novices install this game with no problems), he gives up and smashes the game like an angry child.

How can he claim to be a professional when he a) complains so much about the space, and b) gives up very quickly and has a temper tantrum?

Any reviewer worth listening to knows that there has to be a certain level of professionalism and patience when given a project to review. It sounds to me more like this guy just became a "game reviewer" so he could get free games. On any of the "real" game review sites, had they encountered the same problems, they would have waited until they got it working to do their review.

The guy is just an idiot, whether or not Vanguard is good.

PS. Do people realize how stupid they sound when they try to call someone a "vanboi"? I mean, they even add the emo 'boi' typing. Pretty sad.

    Vanguard's a terribly rushed-out, buggy game.

    It deserves to get trashed.

    As a side note.

http://www.gamespy.com has a review of Vanguard on it.

3/5 it gave considering the bugs and performance issues. Pretty right on the money if you ask me. They said there is potential when the bugs get ironed out though :)

    Enjoy

One of the major lines for me is:

With all our details maxed out, we were still unimpressed by the game's bland textures. Vanguard takes a realistic approach to graphics, shying away from World of Warcraft's more cartoony feel, but the realism seems to have stymied the creative direction of the game's visuals. What should be gloriously impressive fantasy architecture instead looks uninspired. There are a few interesting set pieces to discover, but much of the game has you exploring muted backgrounds and boring environments ad infinitum. It feels like an awful waste of the 17GB (if you can believe it, the minimum system requirement is 20GB) that Vanguard is currently occupying on my hard drive.

Exactly my feelings. While Vanguard claims to be so "uber" in graphical aspects, i find it "fair" at best.

The texture tiling is awefull, the spread from normal to detailmaps is visibly flawed, the distance renderer is to hard, the SpeedTrees are a story on its own, there is no detaillove, no little gimmicks, i miss the "love" of a designer putting little things here and there.
ALl i see is a fractal map with a bit grass and layered textures with bad tiling.
The structures are done loveless and there is no atmosphere in it at all.

Even guildwars already has its very own atmosphere, which is transported to the player.
Oblivion has amazing gfx, causing "ohhs" and "aahhs".
The citys of "CoH/CoV" got their very own atmosphere.

But Vanguard ? Is ok, but not more.
17 GB for "Its ok" ?
