It really depends on your personal tastes.

With that said, I am thoroughly enjoying EVE and Vanguard (ffa server) at the moment, more so than any MMO's since...uo/ac1. Though both these games take same time to get used to and aren't as easy to pick up as WOW or COV.

WOW is extremely easy to get into and may still be worth a look. Though like you commented there are lots of kiddies in there and my ignore list did fill up pretty quick. HOWEVER, if you can find a good guild you should find the game enjoyable; seeing it's your first MMO

COV is also fun and well worth a look. I had no problems with the community in this game and found it quite enjoyable.

You didn't give much info to go on but honestly people on this forum don't take people's preferences into accout anyway, they just refer them to whatever game is in their sig (whatever they like to play).  Just going on mature player bases, Everquest 2 was probably one of the better ones I've played in that respect.  The gameplay is nothing like a nice hack-n-slash Diablo 2 though, it's quest based.  I love a fast paced hack and slash but they are all filled with kids and I can't think of a good one thats out at the moment anyway.

It's hard to give a recommendation without more information. I'm going to try to guess what you like based on what you've said.

Both Diablo 2 and Guild Wars are games heavily oriented around character building built around a highly customizable skill system. I'm hard-pressed to think of any MMORPG that really gives you that level of character customization. Chronicles of Spellborn will be implementing something interesting in that regard, and I think you might like it given your past choices. That said, it's not going to be out in the near future.

Edit: As far as WoW goes, the average player is about twenty-eight. Most publishers are not as forthcoming as Blizzard, but from what I can see, other games have similar demographics. Really, you can go to any MMORPG and find young kids who don't take the game seriously. You can also find people in their early twenties who take the game way too seriously. Neither are fun to play with, in my opinion. People who have been around the block but still have fun are out there, but they're sometimes hard to find among the vocal "hardcore" players, most of whom are twenty-somethings with a lot of time on their hands.

People on this forum do take other people's preferences into account, and it isnt all about the sig. People stick up for the games they play when offensive comments are made. The fact that it is off topic or not im sure the Original Poster can read between the lines. Many people with signatures with a game reference have many constructive things to say on the whole.

    Love

Designed for even 12 year olds? a 12 year old would be able to understand it, yes. Not that thats a bad thing, they are games after all, not exams. Gears of War can be played by my nephew of 9, yet that doesn't mean the game is aimed for his age category.

Amen I hate when people generalize games as being for kids..usually because they can't do well in the game themselves.

Honestly in 4 years of playing WOW I've grouped with maybe 4 people who admitted to being 12 years old.. its very easy to avoid kids in an MMO they usually don't get far and join their own groups... it's not like 100's of bad playing children are running around and you're forced to group with them!

Then again, I know 15 year olds I'd raid with over some people I know who are 20-29 and play like total crap.

WOW is very satisfying for us grownups, and it's easy to find the right mature group of people to play with. Thats one thing I love about the game.

EDIT: And whats with that sepiternal guy? Dang what an angry person. .. Maybe thats what happens when you play Roma Victor.. I know I'd go insane.

There's a certain way things work around here, Aquakitty. When you keep your eyes peeled, you start to see some patterns emerge.

    Example thread:

    Subject: I love cheeseburgers

Random newbie OP: Man, I really love cheeseburgers. I could sure go for a cheeseburger game right now.

Sempiternal: I recommend you check out a little project made by a little company called RedBedlam. It's called Cheesa Burger. In this game, you can make cheese in a brutally realistic Roman world. Then you can put it on a dynamically cooked burger. If you know how to maneuver yourself politically, you can even put those two things between a bun.

Aelfinn: Well, there's a new game coming out which promises dynamic cheeseburger making. It's called Burger of Cheesan. This isn't another stale fantasy cheeseburger game--to Hell with the Burger of Cheescraft kiddies--this game promises realistic burger making for the next generation. Most importantly, it's set in rich Cheesan universe, giving it a rich and mature lore to enjoy while you make burgers. If you look at my sig, you can see my clan which is built around these new cheeseburgers. We haven't actually tasted any, but we're sure they're delicious.

Gameloading: Well, the game which I think is the best out of the ones being made right now is Cheesado Burgerada. It's an Asian game, but it has so many great things in it. The new MMC allows you to have multiple slices of cheese, plus it has great visuals. I even made this blog just to get into the beta.

I know about 10 guys IRL that play EvE like me and all are between 25 and 35.

The monthly pub meetings cost me more then twice the subscription fee.

Hey all, thanks for the replies.  I didn't mean to start an online war.  To clarify some of what I said, and to answer some points others made, I am not against a monthly fee.  I can live with that.  As far as drops vs. crafting, I definilty prefer drops like in D2, (the crafting gets on my nerves).

I'm sure you can find a good game of adults in WOW, I just didnt like the cartoon feel of it.  That why I loved Diablo 2, it was so grim, lol.

One point another thread made about one of the newer games, out, they said it was "hard for a first time MMORPG'er."  Something about being hard to get into.  What makes one game hard, and WOW and Guild Wars easy?  Low player base?  What’s that mean.

    Thanks again for the help.

Well basicly every MMORPG is easy to play, you don't need any advanced gaming skills or whatever to be able to perform well in an mmorpg's, But some MMORPG's are harder to get into then others. Everquest 2 and City of Heroes, for example, take you to a seperate "tutorial" space apart from the main world. In this place, it will explain the game in great detail, it will explain what you can do, and how you do it. A game like Roma Victor or Silkroad online just drop you in the game world without guidence. It can be a bit overwhelming to start in a big city with tons of people walking around, talking, tons of shops, and many NPC's.

a Low playerbase means that the game has very few people playing. Not only makes this the game less fun (imo) because the fun part of MMORPG's is to see other people play the same game as you do in the same world, but it also reduces the lifetime of the game. a game like Roma Victory probably won't keep going for years and years and years.

You shouldn't rush to make a decision, best would be to wait for this years releases (tho they may require a mid-end to high-end system to run well) like Lord of the rings online, Age of conan, Warhammer online, The chronicles of spellborn and others which may prove to be a treat.

Oldies (titles already on the market for a few years) usually tend to put an extra pressure on new players that jump into a half-fought battle.

To make a good suggestion we'd have to know what you're enclined towards, PvP or PvE, sci-fi or fantasy.

I reccomend these titles under the current circumstances

                                 PvP : Guild wars, Daoc

Eve online is in between (also City of heroes/villains)

PvE : Saga of Ryzom, Everquest 2

    Free trials on almost all.

There are other titles, all worth giving a shot, but time is money! so don't try them all unles you've got your mind set on it

    Cheers, chose wisely.

If you want a mans game play WWII online. it's the closest thing you will get to a real challenge in a PvP game world. More like squad vs squad. There's a game where the players really do determine the outcome. Excellent and not for everyone

Roma Victor, i wouldn't recommend.  Very slow paced game and not  at all indicative of what's out there.  If you were experienced I'd say give it a try but get another game under your belt first.

You don't like the graphics in WoW  but there is an older guild called the Geriatrics, see what their members play besides WoW.

Vanguard, I'm trying it now. I wouldn't recommend it for a few reasons. I'll just say wait and get a game that's been out for a while, then try it.  Wait for the free trial or at least til it's more stable and bug free.

Lord of the Rings, I like this game it's polished and I can play at my pace.  Very nice fleshed out graphics rich world. Player base seems to be mature and understanding.

City of Heroes , here's a game I really enjoyed but sadly, it was way too repetitive. Played with 2 others in Euro. time. i left that to play WoW.

Saga of Ryzom, a unique game. Try the free trial you may like it. Interesting people in that one.

That's my take anyway. If you're like me you'll try them all. Then you'll know for sure.

I just read about Age of Conan online.  That looks pretty good, and I used to love those books as a kid.  Its going to eb rated mature, so hopefully that keeps the number of kids lower.  I guess it doesnt come out for a while.

Maybe I'll finnally play Oblivion until AOC is released.  Anyone here have thoughts on this game?

  • AquakittyAquakitty Member Posts: 310
You might want to think about LOTR online seriously, there are a lot of mature people playing it, and the graphics are very realistic.. at least until AoC comes out :)

Cool, that was my fav book growing up.  I didnt realize the game was out already.  I thought it was still an upcomign game.  The character classes looked a little weak though.
