Originally posted by mehhem Originally posted by Az2002ro Originally posted by mehhem Originally posted by Deathstrike2 What is it with the people on this board? We seem to feel the need to stomp on one game to make ours look better. What does LoTR have to do with Vanguard? Other than being 2 new MMOs, absolutely nothing. I think we all need to understand that it's okay to like two or more MMOs at the same time! For example, I play Vanguard and I'm in LoTR beta. Both are great games in their own way! And here's a dirty little secret...I LIKE WOW too! If you limit your MMO tastes to just one game or type of game, you are really going to miss out in the coming months.
I totally agree. People on these forums are just too subjective. Sure an large part of an mmo is subjective as far as liking it, but I try and give objective reasons why I don't like it.
I do think players should play more than one mmo. Currently I play Vanguard and CoX. Vanguard when I want to think a bit, diplomacy and crafting are different than other games I've seen and I play CoX when I just want to kick back and grind grind grind. Others may feel like Vanguard is a grind, and that CoX is not, but thats how I feel.
Objectively I don't like LotRO for a few reasons. 1 It reminds me too much of WoW and for this If I wanted to play this type of game, I'd just play WoW. 2 While I beta tested it, I didn't really enjoy the combat. It was not interesting. 3 The graphics are on par with WoW and WoW came out 2 years ago. I don't want 2 years old graphics. I want cutting edge. Thats why I game with a PC instead of a console.
Im hoping you decide to explain your thinking here, because without it, you have lost a TON of credibility. To say LOTRO graphics are equivilant to WoWs is crazy. Same style? NO. Same quality? NO. LOTRO graphics are far better than CoX, so using these graphic claims as a reason to play it, yet saying you play CoX on a regular basis, makes no sense. LOTRO graphics are comparible to EQII. They are comparable to VG on Balanced. And the water effects in LOTRO outdue VG by a mile. Maybe its my x1300 512m graphics card, but the water in VG looks like watered down milk. with no reflections. Somehow, they put reflection on everything other object in the game, but left it off the water. Maybe there is a Reverse Reflection option I forgot to check in the UI Settings menu. The quality of graphics between LotRO and WoW are the same. Not the same style yes, but quality yea its the same. You said LotRO graphics are comparable to EQ2 graphics, well guess what EQ2 is 2 years old! Hence my comment about 2 years old graphics.
The water effects in VG are awesome on my 8800. Maybe you use subpar hardward and thats why you need to play these games that have subpar graphics.
Im happy to see your life is now somthing better now that you can play with an 8800. Do you even realise how arrogant you sounded there lol.
Vanguards graphics are nice yes and i like vanguard, but i dont find the graphics interesting at all. LOTRO on the other hand has a more interesting art direction, it hasnt gone so much for the bleeding edge realism look that always tends to end up with the character models looking like they are made out of play dough. Also LOTRO can be played by more people who dont have super computers which is good, Vangaurd on the other hand is badly programmed and runs sloppy even on high end machines, you cant deny that to many people have said so.

Graphics are a strange thing and appreciating them is also a strange thing. I am not an expert on graphics but I am a college art instructor (One of the classes I teach is art appreciation) I also am a showing artist. It is all about taste but it is also about appreciation, two very different things. Some people love good anime art and some love The "Mona Lisa" both are great art but they are very different. Trying to comparing WoW to LOTRO is pushing it a bit. Both have a unique look both do it well. However they will not appeal to the same people. There are people like myself who like both. Trying to argue WoW is better then LOTRO is silly. They simply are two different monsters.
In simple tech issues LOTRO is leaps beyond WoW. WoW uses simple old tech to make a colorful, consistent, and singular world. LOTRO uses new tech to create a complex, ambient filled, living world of light. They both work for what they are trying to present artistically. Say what you want about either, but they BOTH work end of story.
Now for the thing you were all dreading my opinion about LOTRO's look. I will not talk about WOW since it is old news (see above). LOTRO is a visual masterpiece. Turbine has created a beautiful world inhabited by amazing creatures. With that said they do drop the ball on a few creatures and npcs. Very rarely, but on an occasion I can see some creatures did not inspire their artist as much as others. Those that say LOTRO looks flat or bland are simply seduced by the colorful style like WoW offers. LOTRO is a colorful amazing world but unfortunately some players need to see with better eyes. One thing people miss a lot, that does not happen in WoW but does in both EQ2 and LOTRO. Is the constant color change as light changes in the enviroment. The sublte change in light as the time of day changes in LOTRO is amazing. Totally lacking in WoW. The artist at Turbine are well trained and know their stuff. The same is often said about EQ2. Simply put some people just do not get it. EQ2 and LOTRO are amazingly beautiful world. Ok, for you Saga of Ryzom fans, SoR has a great art style too.
Those that claim LOTRO does not have good graphic either clean your glasses and the dust from your monitor. Maybe, get a better computer and turn up the graphic levels. Beauty is easily recognized and LOTRO is a beautiful, rich, alive world. Come take my art appreciation class ( I actually talk and show screens from GW, WOW, EQ2 in class) after it you still may not like LOTRO graphics but I damn sure know you will appreciate them. Turbine is not completely successful with everything in LOTRO artistically but they get an A+ for effort. It is a wonderful looking place, that is deserving of your appreciation.

By making it even less possible to die while fighting mobs around your level. I was fighting level fives, at level one, and winning. Can i see a movie of your mad skills?, go grab demo of fraps and post it on youtube
I claimed, and continue to claim no "mad skills".
My point was that its dissapointingly easy, with how fast the health regeneration is set.
Not realy wanting to continue this much more (reason why below) because you know ya talking crap, but mad skills or not can i see a video of a lvl 1 (any class) soloing a lvl 5 mob which you claim you can do?
Also you only regain HP out of combat unless you use a Pot or healer class uses a heal spell.
If you prefer to restsleep for 5mins after each kill then yes stay away from WoW, but if you want to get back fighting fast then WoW's ya man.
Now the reason I came back on this is becuase there are enough half-truths, outright lies and rediculus exagerations about WoW, and I dont want to see this exageration added to the list.
Well, LOTR is not the game for me, however I agree it is quite well done and smooth for a closed beta.
It blows away Vanguard in the playability and smoothness department.
It will certainly appeal to some people, but for some reason I find it rather bland.. maybe I'm not giving it enough of a chance, but i couldn't be bothered to get over L 14 in the beta I'm in now.
I wont get into the bugs (there are still many, but I know its still in beta), but somethings wont change. Im a rather big tolkin fan, and am a long time gamer (beta tested realm and UO, been active mmorpg-player since then). But this game has almost nothing to do with lord of the rings except for the name, similar like DDO. They just exploited the name to lure fans. Also, leveling, adventure, locations are designed to be very fast-food like, sometimes even shallower than WOW.
A big Tokien fan who can't spell his name.
QQ more IMO.

Garrik, maybe you like the games with subpar graphics too. I don't know, but I do know I like the art in Vanguard and WoW more than LotRO. I'm disappointed about this game and I'm voicing my opinion. You can voice yours too, we know you like the art and style of LotRO. Good for you. I'm glad this game does it for you. It doesn't for me.
Great post by Eccoton too, his post sums up all this crap we are arguing about.
At launch once the high res files are available to download it will be pretty clear which game has better graphics. Also LoTRO won't be launching in alpha state asking paying customers to fund the rest of development because they couldn't secure enough funding.

So his credibility is pretty much non-existent.
Yeah and we all know how DnL pwns LOTRO. DnL doesn't have any bugs!
All this talk of WOW vs LOTRO - but in my opinion, they're both top-notch in terms of graphics, as far as artistic vision and quality. WOW's cartoon style isn't to my taste, I actually hate it -but I can still see that they have skilled artists putting thier world together, from the level design, to the modellers, animators, and skinners.
LOTRO may be ahead in terms of technology, and much more to my taste in terms of style, but artistically - I'd say they're just both just damn well done. As such, no point in even comparing, any more than comparing a great Chinese restaurant to a great Italian restaurant. Plus they both show that good graphics don't require pushing technology to its limits.
Vanguard, on the other hand, is like a really expensive French restaurant, using all the finest ingredients, often to the point of inept excess, because they're thrown together by cooks who should be flipping burgers at some greasy spoon diner.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Thats a very bad screenshot of WOW Funny... I thought that was one of the best screenshots from WOW. Every other shot I've seen looks like it came out of a modern saturday morning cartoon. Bleh.

The only problem i have with this post is the line "maybe you like the games with subpar graphics too" the graphics are NOT subpar by todays standards no where near. The 8800GTX is a great card and i know i can run anything with it, but i just prefer how LOTRO, so maybe to you it is subpar but to others it isnt. You cant simply pass off other peoples opinions as them liking subpar graphics. I could say you like the subpar animations and subpar character models of Vangaurd.
Anyway each to there own i guess, we will have to agree to disagree .

Its simple, there are just different taste preferences- Some consumers prefer fast food (wow), some like gourmet (vanguard) some others like dog food (LOTRO).
Vanguard is gourmet? mmmmmmm Somehow I don't think your statement is always true unlike your moniker. Vanguard is like a huge bowl of oatmeal, a vast sea of blandness.
