Hehe it's almost disturbing Jackdog, seeing you actually supporting a game!
hey dude I supported UO, DAoC and EQII. I could even tolerate WoW and never really slammed it although I never made it through the free 30 myself. CoH was ok also and damn good in some respects, however it was too much of a grind after level 20 for me.
This is the first game to really grab me hard since DAoC and although it is not for everyone, I think it is going to be a pretty big hit. Not that Blizzard needs to start planning on shutting severs down, but I can see it hitting 350 to 400K just because it is a very solid game. It's not that it is a great game, but it is the best thing to hit the market in a long while in my opinion.
I dunno..i was kinda thinking this was the game DDO should have been. Its a fun game..nothing more. It lets you look at the world and gives some feel that your are part of the story. As far as the WOW, eq2 type games..i enjy this one the most
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
LotRO is a good game. It's solid, the graphics are nice, and it's reasonably fun to play. Having played the beta, I can see that Turbine is shaping up a solid experience here. I personally think it's very Middle Earth-y and think that they've done a fantastic job with the atmosphere.
However, I don't think it's one I'll be paying for. I (unlike, it seems, everyone else in the community) still look at Turbine through rose-colored glasses because of AC1, and I've been waiting for them to do it, or something like it, again.
I know, though, that there are people who enjoy it and will be playing it, and to those people I say that I'm glad you found a game that you like and enjoy playing!

The level of Turbine bashing has reached insane proportions. I honestly think half of these Turbine bashers this time around have not even played the LOTRO beta for 1 second, much less 5 or 10 minutes.
Turbine is not Limitless Horizons folks. Lay the hell off of them a little for Jesus H Christ.
This game has great quests not ot mention the story driven ones!!! I have only positive words for this one except for a little lag here and there but that is fixable....
anyway someone here mentioned grinding in this game and overall grinding in mmorpgs...cmon you can be rly touching that subject in this genre ....can you? I mean its silly.....besides there r SO MANY QUESTS in this game that you dont even feel like grinding

The amount of Exp gained from quests kind of makes grinding useless too. I got over 800 exp from one quest while it would take about 20-25 monster kills on average to reach the same amount.

Will said dude. I copmletely agree with you .
One thing I have to say is that how does Turbine suck? D&D was a fine game... sure wasn't worth a subscription I admit that... but the fighting and graphics were excellent. Now LOTRO is just amazing. Great game and I pre-ordered it today because it is THAT great of a game. I have never pre-ordered a game until now that is how kickass this game is. So If you hate Turbine because of D&D you are retarded first off, second off don't diss LOTRO if you havn't even played it for an hour.

I've gone from a 5 star member here, to 2 star over 2007 due to my (growing) lack of interest in this genre, and I do have a very extensive hobby thankyou. Photographed a surf carnival this morning. Was good fun.
There's a big difference between a game with the draw and content to captivate an audience, and one that is just a pointless grind for pointless grind's sake (ie two 'big' games with SoE's fingers in the pie) - ie the second job you talk about.
I'm just over this linear "go here, grind, quest, go to next place when you outgrow this place" setups. Guess I was hoping LotRO would deliver an immersive, sandboxish game.
Confirms one thing for sure though. I'm not touching anything Turbine put their men-in-suits focused fingers on from here on.
How do you know LoTRO isn't a "sandboxish" game if you havent even made it past the tutorial levels and even gotten out to SEE the game. Wakeup Clown.
If you're going to comment on something atleast have the experience behind you to support it.

There really isn't any grind in LOTRO, and while not a full sandbox game there is a LOT of stuff to do. For details on the 'stuff' read some of my other posts, don't feel like typing it all.

Turbine, are you guys over there for real? This is exactly the same game as DDO except there is no static dungeons, same items, same everything...more lag, hopefully this is your final attempt at making an mmo...GET REAL! This game doesnt compare to all time greats like SWG (pre-pub), AO, WoW... Definately not buying this garbage...
LMFAO...."greats"............
I don't think this guy tried the beta, he's way off on every remark. I hate DDO (I mean I really really don't like like it.... really really, in fact its not even an MMO IMHO) and I can't find anything similar to it in LotRs

lol i agree completely its NOTHING like ddo...NOTHING!!!! except the graphics but i still think they r great. Face it the guy played it for 5 mins saw the grapchic and what not and quit....and starts bashing the game like crap...get real
Think you and your family will have a great time , it is a really fun game that every age can enjoy. Though the game is not based on the movies but on the Tolkien book The Silmarillion . Not sure if you know it already but you can check out the wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Silmarillion
LOTRO isn't based off The Silmarilion at all, infact you can look at the archives somewhere at LOTRO to see that they weren't given permission to use anything out of the Sil at all. LOTRO is completely based off of The Hobbit and LotR trilogy books and only lore that is mentioned in there. I wish LOTRO did used the Sil as well, that would be awesome. Then LOTRO would be more thorough as Middle Earth should be. But it isn't....."YET"!!!
Maybe when Turbine proves themselves with the public release of LOTRO, then maybe, just maybe Tolkein enterprises will let them have the license to use the Sil.
As for the OP and Arremus with their so called review of how this game is. I have one MAJOR suggestion. You don't really have the background and the knowledge of LOTRO to even start considering giving your opinion. Unless you have not only made it through all of Bree-Land, but have experienced the Old Forest and survived it. In addition to understanding what not only the traits are and how you achieve them, but also the lore book Aka... Deed log as they call it now.
I've been playing in the beta ever since Alpha phase ended and I have seen this game come alive in so many ways I am amazed at what the progression has been. I only see a great path shine brighter and brighter as each change gets applied.
To people like me and other testers that have put in more than a measly hour or so. To us you only picked up the book, looked and the front cover and back cover. Then put the book down and spoke out to others that have read a few chapters or more and told us that the book sucked.
Give me a break, with the time you put into LOTRO I am surprised that you even made it out the gates of Archet. Let alone even ever seeing Bree-Town. I am sure even Combe is an unknown location to you. You are in NO position to judge LOTRO whatsoever. Now, just go get over AC2 being canceled, or DDO not living up to your standards. Or the delusion of the "men-in-suits" coming to get your wallet/purse.
I suggest that you both request prozac from your doctor and go on with your lives. Maybe then you will see things in a different light and not see things so pessimistically.
Maybe when Turbine proves themselves with the public release of LOTRO, then maybe, just maybe Tolkein enterprises will let them have the license to use the Sil.
Actually, Tolkien Enterprises doesn't hold the license to the Silmarillion. That license is still owned by Christopher Tolkien, and he'd sooner have bamboo shoots driven under his fingernails than release the license for any entertainment property (other than audio books apparently).
And having played DDO myself (okay game, just not my style), LOTRO is nothing like DDO. In fact, it's like saying Guild Wars is exactly like WoW.

Good info here , I though the game also was based on the Samarillion. Hmm I read the hobbit , but not the Lord of The Rings Trilogy so I think I will start working on that so I can get a better aspect of the time line . I feel like they are going to do a City of Villians type thing and release a big expansion like that , has anyone heard anything about the longevity of this game ?
OK, so I've played since beta 2, I'm in a great kinship and I had a level 14 guardian and 7 minstrel.
Yet, when faced with the choice of a bug -ridden Vanguard and a super-polished beta LotR I keep going back to Vanguard. I've played/tested LotR about 2 hours last week.
Does it get significantly different after say level 20? I've been a Tolkien fan for over 20 years and there are aspects of LotR that I really enjoy but so far there's no hook. In fact, I'm even considering quitting the kinship and just not buying this game
I don't actually feel I'm part of a persistant world in LotR and I've never played a game with so liitle co-operation or even general chat. At what level does this change, when do folks talk, when do they group?
all time greats such as swg? wow? and ao? LOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLO The only all time greats in MMO are Ultima Online .. and Everquest.
lol I know right!
But you forgot Asheron's Call. Which was made by Turbine. Turbine just needs to make an AC2 that is AC1 with more content and better looks. Damn that would be an awesome game.
I don't actually feel I'm part of a persistant world in LotR and I've never played a game with so liitle co-operation or even general chat. At what level does this change, when do folks talk, when do they group?
Thats not a problem with LoTR, thats a growing problem with most MMO's currently available.
The newer crop of MMO players seem to want to solo their way through MMO's and only group when really neccessary, maybe its because games like WoW and Guild Wars have attracted more the FPS crowd, but personally i find it disapointing and a loss to the genre.
I like and enjoy grouping, I like and enjoy co-operative play but it seems to be a diminishing trait in the current MMO playerbase.

Well said. Hopefully RP servers or something like that will give people intentions to actually stop the questing, and talk to the other players surrounding them. This is MMO, not a single player game with loads of verbal NPCs running aside you.
Anyone who has played an MMO for only 10 minutes and then makes their judgement is lacking the vital organ needed to correctly judge: THE BRAIN.
MMO's are notorious for being time-consuming. 10 minutes of any MMO is like turning on your new Xbox360 game, looking at the title screen, judging the entire game, and then pushing the power off before it even says "To begin, press start."

Not played the game. But son is a huge fan of the movies.
So I got 4 per-order copies today...
At 10 bucks a pop if the game turns out to be crap then you get to see before you buy the retail version via the beta
If you love the game then you get to pay less then people who wait and get in game stuff
Wife and kids loaded the beta on their pcs today hoping to play it soon.
Me I jus hope for something that looks nothing like SWG
