"But today the game is far better than it has ever been - for the first time it's organized, playable and fun"
I can not disagree with this statement more. I had played SWG from beta up to the NGE, and I believe there are probably thousands of players around that laugh reading that statement. I was one of the first master doctors on Valcyn, leveled my character by sitting in the Coronet Medical Center healing players whose adventures didn't go over that well in the wild.
I would take the elevator up to the third floor and sit crafting my own meds till I had enough to get back to work below. This game will never see days like that again. No grinding, actual players counting on other players to get by.
I am not saying anything about this game post NGE. I have tried it and it is not to my personal liking, but I do see how others can enjoy it. But to say the game now is far better then it was in the old days has me sitting here just shaking my head.
The game had plenty of critics from day one, because even pre-CU it was broken and lacked goal and depth. The reason it was far more popular back then is that it drew many Sci-Fi and SW fans who could live with the redeeming features of the game, because it offered a unique and popular universe and because many people had great social contacts in-game. The whole reason for the extreme changes like the CU and NGE was a declining number of subs. So n o, pre-CU wasn't paradise at all.
About the timeline, they chose the worst possible setting, because they figured the movie era would be the best marketing choice. Short term it was fine. But long term it was a disaster. The movies fixed the entire storyline in stone, so they couldn't install any decent end-game, they couldn't correctly use Jedi in the game, they couldn't even allow individual server evolution -something even Asheron's Call had-. When they noticed people weren't content anymore having their grind go nowhere, they started making dire changes like the CU and NGE, both very bad idead implemented in a disastrously awful manner.
They should have went with the Kotor era or the New Republic era .They would have had room for interesting storylines and content, they could have used Jedi in a way that didn't offend the SWU, etc.

I think timelines in a game are bad.
Too many players want things added to the game even if it goes against the timeline.
Timelines are too restrictive.
