I was looking at the classes, no healer in this game?, or i have bin looking at the wrong place maybe... shame there are only 4 classes, but wow had 4 aswell, well 8, but 4 on each side, was hoping for a healer class in this game, love being healer :-)
Well, my only actually play experience was this past weekend on the open stress test, and I had a lot of fun, some might compare it to WoW, but WoW was never this much fun, though I found WoW quite boring.
Also, with the size comments, I think, if you compare it to the books, then yeah, it's really small, but when compared to othe MMOs, it feels just right.
So welcome to the community and I hope you enjoy your stay.

You have to get a "good guy" character to level 10 before the monster characters open up. Then you can create as many monster chars as there are slots for it.

You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.

You can try to get one of the 10,000 CVG beta keys being offered (they may already be out of stock).
But ANYONE can have a FREE TRIAL of LOTRO starting April 6. You can download the client and play it.
Those who pre-order, however, will be in the Open Beta starting March 30. For those who have pre-ordered, they will be able to keep all characters (this has been recently announced) made on all servers available (up to five per server) for RETAIL RELEASE (this is a pre-order bonus). (Also a couple of bonus items -- a regeneration cloak and an agility ring.)
The level cap limits characters to Level 15 in the Open Beta. But, if you pre-order, you can make and keep as many Level 15 characters as you wish (again -- up to five per server) for Retail Release. (This is also good for "reserving" character names.)
Pre-order customers also lock-in a $9.99 monthly subscription price -- as long as you never cancel your subscription. The alternative is to pay a one-time $199 Lifetime Fee and NEVER pay a subscription fee again. You WILL need to purchase any expansions released ($30-$40) but you will never have to pay a monthly subscription fee if you take the $199 Lifetime Membership Option. (You have 30 days to elect the Lifetime Membership Option. After that it will on longer be available to you -- so choose wisely.)

So far my experience is that this is a good game for the casual player as you can accomplish something in just a short session. And on the whole I like the gameplay. The graphics are decent, better than WoW, but I like Vanguard graphics better. I also think LOTRO graphics are too "cute", the world should feel more menacing and threatening. But grahpics are something you get used to in a game and not something that bothers me if the game is fun, two things that turns me off though.
First, I hate that you can't enter more than a few houses, this is a real immersion breaker and was one of the reasons I discarded AC2 almost immediately, a possible game breaker to me. Second, I find the combat uninspired and pretty dull.
But on the whole a promising game and set in the very best of settings.

I still don't understand why players insist on going into every house. Quite frankly, I would be all for players going into every house if the NPC's can call the local constable on you.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
It is not that I would actually enter every house it is just that I should have the ability to enter them! If they put a house in a game it should not just be a pretty looking obstacle but an actual part of the game.
And I would love it if the constables came running and throwing you into jail for breaking and entering, that would be super and quite the opposite to immersion breaking!!! This happened to me a lot in Daggerfall if anyone remembers that wonderful game...

Now why would they take the time to make a bunch of open houses with nothing important to do inside of them when no one would go into them? Like you said, you wouldn't enter every house, so why make them able to be entered?

This is the crux of it.
It takes so much time and money to create these game assets that it is not realistic to create a city full of houses where you "could" enter them, but there is nothing to do. That would be a waste of the game maker's time.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Now come on, I would say in most MMOs you can enter the houses they have in game. To me not being able to enter is an immersion breaker that simply makes the world feel less like a living and breathing fantasy world.
I can't remember houses in WoW I couldn't enter, the same I think is true in EQ2 (not 100% sure though), same in Eq1 and in Vanguard and as far as I remember SWG too. Even in AO I think you could enter if not all so at least most of the houses.
Perhaps not a game breaker, but details that makes the illusion of the game world feeling real is very important, at least to me.

You can enter many buildings, but not all of them. What the one guy said was that he wanted to be able to walk into every building. So that would mean all the slums in the poor district of bree, every hole in the shire, etc.

I remember eq2 had vert few houses u could enter, myself like it to, when u can enter a house if u wanna, maybe u dont need to enter it, but just the abillity to do it, but its nothing importen, but a nice feature
My friend and I tried LOTR the other night :- Dull as dishwater, sadly. He is a LOTR fan, I'm not but I do enjoy MMORPGs.
1. Graphics were 'nice' but the running animations spoiled it, your charcter leans left and right when you turn and performs some fairy like action when jumping making the whole thing appear rather cartoony.
Some really nice effects in place, the opening story part for instance. But overall the whole enviroment didn't feel right -- to ME --
2. ZzZzz sorry to all you screaming fanbois but this game did not inspire my friend or myself. Speak to NPC > run here speak to NPC > run here speak to NPC > kill stuff while sleeping at the keyboard > run here speak to NPC. Pretty run of the mill stuff, and no real difference to any other MMORPG I know but for some reason it seemed even more dull than usual in LOTRO. Maybe it was the feeling of a complete lack of exploration and feeling spoonfed along the way. Again, no different than normal but it felt much more apparent here.
First impressions count. And for me LOTR failed to inspire me to level further and perhaps enjoy some of the 'awsome' content that is to come.
Different stroke for different folkes. On the flip side we tried Vanguard and had a blast. /shrug

If you like VG it's unlikely you'd like this game anyway. Although I will say this... I've never been able to decide one way or another fairly on an MMO in a day. If that's all it took for you to judge it, based on beta content when animations are still being worked on (the real bugs are more important), than I don't think you really ever intended to give this game a real shot. The second you start doing the story-line quests and the mini-instances that drive them you will see that there is no other game out there that can touch the quests here. But that's my opinion, take it for what it's worth. You're fully entitled to your own.

Granted, as I said I'm sure there is 'awsome' content ahead but a game is supposed to be fun as is any leisure activity but for me LOTRO failed to provide me with enough fun in the first few hours of play. That for me is a failing. I didn't get enough enjoyment from what I tried so therefor I wont be playing it.
As far as animations go and from what I have read LOTRO is fully polished. These weren't missing or broken animations, they were styled animations that I found detracted from the hard work that went into some of the other enviromentals. A mix of realism and Toy Story.
I have played many MMORPGS;
AO My first, enjoyed
Neocron enjoyed, great PvP fights OP fights
SWG enjoyed, Pre F**K up. played @ release
Lin2 not bad, some pretty nice themes/areas etc
Ryzom enjoyed, but was a bit under populated @ the time
Eve online enjoyed, 3 accounts but now cancled
EQ2 enjoyed for the time that I played, but got bored after a while
City of X great game series prefered Heroes side of it
DDO was good in places, guild didnt stay long so moved on after a short time
DAoC tried it not long ago, but didnt enjoy the GFX/feel of it
MxO Fun for the first few weeks but got reptitive quickly, under populated, nice GFX
guildwars Disliked -- boring. PvP was ok, if full of complete asshats
Auto Aslt a nice change in style and fun to play. But a bit lacking
WoW still subbed and playing, took years for me to finaly try it turned out to be pretty good.
WW2 great combat game. requires some serious time. played in last campaign
Planetside great game played for a few years on and off
FoM tried it twice, loved the concept but I couldn't get into it
2nd life was bored so tried this one day.. no comment
There see above
A call in the Desert couldn't get into this either
LOTRO breif trial, failed to inspire
VSoH enjoying -- for now time will tell
So statements like " If you like VG it's unlikely you'd like this game anyway" although well meaning, aren't always good ones. The above is a good mix of most of the "best titles" and some obscure ones.
And the list in no way lends any weight to any comments toward any game. I was pointing out that you can't always pigeonhole people.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

/peace and enjoy LOTRO
