Honestly, I have'nt signed up for either game yet.. just been following them, watching them. But overall i think i PREFER Vanguards although it's far from complete and way underdeveloped compared to LOTR's; why ? because of..
1)BOTH MMORPG's look like they are using Speedtree propagating software in thier clients(remember Oblivion, yea' that engine)(very pretty) 2)LOTR in my opionion has gotten ALOT more TLC and time placed in their world to maximise that beauty but it only means it's MORE developmentally along(Like a finished single player game is)(also heard you can walk across LOTR in about 10 minutes, so alot smaller) 3)Vanguard has been so overburdened developing ALL thier games features, and working out bugs and problems they haven't had the TIME to figure out or create world beauty on that scale(every TLC art angle)(Will take forever, but it might come around)(the TLC development) AND they are going for KEITH PARKINSON's art look. They are pretty darn good for the amatures they are~!! :} 4)Playing a game with overbright color and TOO PERFECT world will ruin and annoy me eventually.. (playing WOW or Oblivion)(something NAGS at me, this GENERATED world is little TOO contrived) the MOOD of Vanguard appears better, the realism is more to my likeing.
It's my opinion, but i lived in the countryside and nature IS stunning and amazing; So anything remotely resembling it; THAT i can appreciate and gets my vote..
Honestly I have not seen a game that has impressed me as much as the enviroment in VG does. It's not the prettiest, but something about it is just amazing to me.
I was on vent talking to a friend while I was playing and had to stop to explain to him how when I look around I'm impressed by the number of not just trees I can see, but DIFFERENT trees I see. And not just different types but different shapes of the same type of tree. Not to mention I haven't seen a tree yet with a jagged trunk, they're ROUND. Might sound silly, but that's something that impresses me. Round tree trunks.
The character models don't impress me in any way really outside of the fact that they do have the same style as Parkinsons art, but then I don't spend my time staring at my character anyways. One thing that isn't translated well in the screenshots is the detail in the characters. There is accually a lot of fine detail on the character models that gets overlooked because the animations are so crappy that I think people overlook it. Then there is the horrible lighting on the models when your indoors that make them look plastic. I thinkthey went a little overboard on the specular, but there is a lot of detail in them and even with the limited hair and face options I don't see the same people running around. The same may not be said for NPC's but as far as player character go, I have not seen any 2 that looked alike outside of the hair. And having only 4 face options doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me because of the way you can change each facial feature.
Only game I've played that I enjoy getting on my horse and just riding around to see what I can see, and after a month I'm still finding places on Kojan that I haven't been before. Kojan is the smallest of the three continents and I'm impressed with the amount of different enviroments I've seen there; I'd say I can't wait to see the other continents, but I'm having to much fun running around Kojan.
Someone mentioned earlier that they think the water might be bump mapped; it got me to thinking and I checked it out. It's not the water it's the terrain under the water that is bump mapped and makes the water look like it is to.
VG run on the right rig, in my opinion, is one of the most amazing looking MMO's I have ever played.
