WoW hits 8.5m subscribers
Wednesday 7-Mar-2007 10:54 AM Blizzard's success story continues, The Burning Crusade unsurprisingly selling rather well

The MMORPG has already touched the hearts of millions worldwide but its campaign for world domination doesn't look like ending anytime soon.

Latest subscriber numbers for World of Warcraft have topped a staggering 8.5 million users. Wow, indeed.

That's almost as crazy as this bloke accused of stealing women's undies from a shop at knifepoint believing he was a female elf after playing an RPG. That's a warning to you all that is...

Accompanying subscriber figures is news that expansion The Burning Crusade has sold approximately 3.5 millions copies total in WoW-powered territories since its launch. TBC sales hit close to 2.4 million units worldwide in its first 24 hours of availability, and it's "now established the new one-month record for PC game sales", says Blizzard.

Puzzling, it surely would have taken a bigger hike with TBC with players returning. And only 3.5m TBC sales?

TBC was only avaliable in NA and europe, and according to blizz last press release the number of subscribers there were 3.5 million (Source: www.blizzard.com/press/070111.shtml),  so selling 3.5 millsion to 3.5 million potential customers is rather good.

I'll also post up the blizzard subscriber definition, ready for the guys who dispute the numbers. In summery these are subscriptions (not characters) and only active ( non banned/cancled or trial ) accounts are counted.

    World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

Blizzard sucks. 8.5 million alot? Haha, just look at the "Scions of Fate" add on this site. 70 million registered players. Blizzard is nothing against that.

Looks like World of Warcraft is still going strong. Gz to Blizzard. I guess they can start wiping their bottoms with dollar bills now.

Yep, that makes sense, padded on another .5 million with players returning to play TBC.....

but...some are leaving already....  we'll see how the numbers look in the next quarter....

The day a pay to play game can match a free korean farmfest game with players that just create an account and don't log on it, then the world has gone far (no idea where to tho...). Comparing Scions of Fate with WoW is just ridicolous, it's like comparing how persons that got Sony Vegas Pro with how many persons that got Windows Movie Maker. The comparison doesn't in anyways work. Better luck next time!

That's always mentioned after numbers are released, and in the following quarter it's always bigger numbers being anounced.

Commercially it's been very succesful.  3.5m is almost 100% subscriber buy rate because TBC was made available only in NA and Europe where there are about 3.5m subs ... so quite impressive in that sense.

Performance since launch ... less impressive.  Massive nerfs are arriving due to PvP arena, and many people are annoyed.  It makes WoW vulnerable for other games like AoC and most likely WAR later this year.

8.5 million users?? guess they are making so much now!!! but i think that they just counted the accounts made..in which some gamer has at least 2 accounts. so i guess 8 million would do..but that's still huge!!!

Its active subscribers not accounts or charcater (excluding old/banned/canceled/trial accounts), think of it as 3.5 million people sending in a cheque to blizzard for £8,99 every month (discounted asia subs as they pay differently).

Ah that would explain it, not being released in Asia. Though, is 3.5m good? There are subscribers, and there are many more sales. I think it's said WoW has 19m sales I can't verify this. But then surely it should be perhaps a bit higher. Though,
Not every WoW player currently is going to buy BC especially as they might not have levelled that high. So that 3.5m would not be a direct fit to existing customers. More, it would be applicable to a number of returning customers. Which could be 0.5-1m perhaps. Perhaps not so bad then.

The number of BC figures should carry on increasing as the existing players will level up to the level when they need BC and also maybe a few more returnees. Though, ultimately, I think this could be the start of the decline especially with LOTR Online around the corner.

    Just my ramble.

OMG another post on how WOW doesnt really have the active subs they claim to have! These posts have been going on for 2+ years now. And yet WOW's numbers keep going up. Who cares ? If you dont like the game go play some other shit.

i guess we'll see in a couple months from now...

Well if WoW holds true just as many join than leave.  Im not goona leave WoW, for the simple fact nothing is better IMHO, but last week I got my full Dungeon set and that was my goal, now that goal is reach Im struggling to find another, I think i'll max my professions, but I no longer log in every evening unless its my turn in karazan.  Purhaps when the black temple opens ill be back on full power... but I think im just bored of MMO's in general.

I wish blizz promoted Halaa more, at 66 i had an great battle there, about 25 allaince against 25 odd hord, we battled it out for over 2 hours, was the best PvP experinence I ever had since my first week in WoW where horde/allaince fought between ashenvale and barrens, sadly Halaa is not that active any more.

WoW stil is the supream commander of the MMO army... but it needs a massive PvP content patch, if only to complete with WAR.

People leave MMORPGs all the time.  If you've ever recruited for a guild, you know it never stops.

You cannot draw any conclusions from the few people you know to be quitting.  And in my experience, the ones that are always threatening to quit are the ones that play the most and don't end up quitting.

    Blizzard aren't lying, move along.

listen here fan boi. i'm not talking about "the few people i know from my guild" i'm talking about mass numbers of people i know. i've seen more hard-core wow'rs quit recently then you can shake a stick at. not only that but several of the top guilds on my server have gone to hell due to this. the most incomming people i see are server transfer toons or the same old people playing new toons with the introduction of the drenari and the blood elfs.
