That's a nice outcome, I didn't vote for the top contender but I can understand why it is on top. Even though I am an avid EVE fan I find this poll more believable and realistic than the awards where EVE won just about everything (even best PVE... WTF?)
Still I find Guild Wars a prime example of how an MMO should NOT be but this is a personal thing.

Lol EQ2 being top, i quit the game some 4 months ago now, you only had to rwad every section of their forums to see why the population on servers were getting smaller and smaller. If its so good, please explain to me why their subs are falling and falling? Even when i was playing it, max they had were around 500k subs.

You have to remember that this site is for MMORPG refugees, people who keep looking for their next fix, the next new game to play, who are LOOKING for games rather than PLAYING them (funny enough I don't fall into this category, I just like argueing :P)
Therefore any esteablished MMO out there will be considered crap, otherwise people would play it and wouldn't lurk around here. Secondly, people are so insecure they have to bash other things to feel superior and on top, it's a human thing.
Thirdly (as I've stated somewhere else before) WOW caused an influx of new players, not MMO players but people unknown to the whole MMORPG concept, this might have a very worrying effect on the state of MMO's to come as developers are/will be trying to make carbon copies of WOW, which worries and frightens a lot of the 'old' MMO players. It's a valid concern imo.

Exactly what im on about, this site full of nothing but haters and trolls, people know their own game is crap, so they hate another game for taking thier subs, and then come to forums like this and bash World of warcraft non stop. Also i have noticed that people just jump from 1 game to another constantly, trying to get their fix, if you want something to feed your addiction go get some drugs.

Sure, if I were Blizzard I wouldn't even notice a site like this but the other stuff you mention is very much open to personal preference. When EQ2 came out it certainly wasn't perfect, I started playing on release, kept playing for 3 months but went back to DAoC because I couldn't stand having to kill another 5 million scarecrows and gnolls, apart from that there were a lot of other issues. Now EQ2 has changed, matured and has grown into a very nice proper MMO. You don't have to like it on a personal level (I still don't) but I CAN understand why others do.
This poll is a democratic thing and thefore there will be a lot of people who won't like the outcome of these polls, tough luck imo (no, mine didn't win either).

Im not basing the games on quality, but the facts are that all the games that are so called listed as favourite, have been for months bashed on their own official forums or others, leading to falling subs due to nerfs or dissapointing expansions or sequals.
Fact is the other games could be superior or not, but simple fact is why do they have in the 100s or 10s of thousands of subscribers? Please dont start saying it due to marketing, the other games have been around for along time, so i presume the majority of haters on this site like 95% would have played them, yet each game listed has a measly section of subs.
If the so called games are so superior to wow, then why do they not play them? Please dont give the crap its about marketing, only so much marketing can do, people played wow and play it beacuse it is recommended by other people as being a superior game to other already out.. All the other games are still out there that they can chose to play. If the other so called superior games were great im sure people would be still playing it. The simple reason why all the other games are flat out on their knees waiting for the KO punch is that at the time when they were worund there was not much variety and people were stuck with what they had, now all of a sudden variety and a market leader, and everyone is a so called expert, i know lets go back to the time when there was no money spent on mmos, and nobody even knew about online gaming, and you were stuck with 2-3 games max of a choice. that souds good, hell why not even go back to black and white Screens.
I for one and glad blizzard and wow has opened up a whole new door, and has given millions of new people the abiltiy to try online gaming, oh sorry some of you people might not like this, wow has allowed for companies now to invest millions of doallrs intoonline gaming and sites and commuinites, in the hope that they can get some of the pie.

Personally I play games a lot, I don't play a lot of games tho. What I mean is that I pick one quality product and stick to it till it has run it's course. I've played DAoC for almost 5 years, I've played CoX for a long while and now I play EVE online for more than a year now. It took me a few tries to find these gems though. To me these 3 are at the top of what MMO's should be about. Funnily enough each of these 3 is very different from the other, they can't be compared to eachother at all yet I like them equally.
The ONLY similarity they have is this; they are/were ground breaking.
- DAoC for it's seamless integration of PVE and PVP with a story to it; you loved to hate the other realms. The amount of options it gave you, the fact that it took skill, preparation and planning to compete. This wasn't done on this scale before in any other game, heck it STILL is unsurpassed PVP wise.
- CoX because it's funky, it doesn't try to be sophisticated, it's made to be fun, the graphics are great and the degree of customization will probably be unmatched for a LOOOONG time.
- EVE because.. well, it's EVE. Can't be explained, only experienced heh
WOW isn't groundbreaking really, the only groundbreaking thing about it is that it really has no faults; it worked properly at launch, it delivers a smooth gameplay. Still to me it lacks a lot, it lacks the highs and lows other games give me. It's aimed for the general public, it is in fact like a big mac; a quick and tasty fix if you feel a bit hungry, but you shouldn't make it into your daily dinner as it's not high quality enough and the taste get boring since it's one big mash of different stuff garnished with strong, overpowered chemical sauses.
It's fun, but only for so long. As such to me it fails at being a long term MMORPG prospect.

No mmorpg is a long term prospect, thats why most games listed here have a few thousaund players still or 100 thousand still. Its obvious wows subs will fall as newer and better games get realeased, thats the way of the world all games will die eventually. Reason is due to the fact they once were, and to a certain extent they still satisfy a handful of players in mmo terms, but they are not going to satisfy new gamers wanting more. I did the Eve tutorials but after a hard day at work it just seemed like more hard work. Ended up falling asleep.
you have to see through that, EVE is a very complex game with a more than steep learning curve. Most people will tell you that EVE is about mining and missionrunning, but I think we already established that the majority of people aren't always right
Personally I've never done any more missions after my starting period, and I can't (and won't) mine even if my life depended on it, yet I make cash easily enough to be able to fund my modest desires in the game. Simply by being smart about things and by seizing opportunities when you see them.
As a starter you can make your first 15 million in a few hours and make some 5-10 million on a daily basis without really working for it. i know this because I started a new character, properly playing him instead of twinking him using my 'main'. All it takes is the willingness to read and find out stuff rather than just followign the pack and not being bothered by trying to find your own things.
EVE has many different layers of gameplay; there's the miner/mission runner/manufacturer who never sees low sec, conflict or proper gameplay, this is the boring part of EVE yet a ton of people do it and like it. Then there's the small scale conflict/rivalry where you try to push ahead by winning over others, and those others try to do the same to you. at the end there's the grand scale of things where it's anarchy, politics and deceit which rule the universe (literally) with all the drama, problems, highs and lows that come from having only a handful of leaders shape the gaming world for thousands of their followers.
It's grand and unsurpassed, the trick is to not be caught in the "high sec miner/mission runner/manufacturer who has no graps of the rest of the universe" paradigm. This can be difficult even more when peopel tell you that's what EVE is all about, it's not and they're very much wrong.

You have to remember that this site is for MMORPG refugees, people who keep looking for their next fix, the next new game to play, who are LOOKING for games rather than PLAYING them (funny enough I don't fall into this category, I just like argueing :P)
Therefore any esteablished MMO out there will be considered crap, otherwise people would play it and wouldn't lurk around here. Secondly, people are so insecure they have to bash other things to feel superior and on top, it's a human thing.
Thirdly (as I've stated somewhere else before) WOW caused an influx of new players, not MMO players but people unknown to the whole MMORPG concept, this might have a very worrying effect on the state of MMO's to come as developers are/will be trying to make carbon copies of WOW, which worries and frightens a lot of the 'old' MMO players. It's a valid concern imo.
Exactly what im on about, this site full of nothing but haters and trolls, people know their own game is crap, so they hate another game for taking thier subs, and then come to forums like this and bash World of warcraft non stop. Also i have noticed that people just jump from 1 game to another constantly, trying to get their fix, if you want something to feed your addiction go get some drugs.
Lol vanguard forums for motnhs were full of people before it was relased, and majority no doubt from this site, were saying that vanguard was the game EQ2 was supposed to be, lol how times change, before vanguard was released EQ2 offical forums were bashing it non stop, and no all of a sudden its the greates game ever, lol dont make me laugh. Why dont some of you actually go play that game before if scoring it. LOl and as for asherons call 2 being up there, lol once again shows you how crazy this site is, peopel have been bashing it for a damn long time now saying that turbine really fucked it up etc etc, and now all of a sudden its peoples favourite game.
Lol if blizzard or any company actually read or took anything serisuly from this site, they would all be bankrput or near dead now. Oh sory most are dead or are on their 100th expansion now trying to keep the game alive with the 5-1ok subs they have.
Now i can see why blizzard has nothing at all to do with this site.

UO circa 1998and 1999 were the best years of my gaming life.
Next closest was the first few months of WoW but unfortunately having no penalty/reward for dying/pking it got boring and meaningless. I stuck with it for 2 years cos there was nothing else.

Sure, if I were Blizzard I wouldn't even notice a site like this but the other stuff you mention is very much open to personal preference. When EQ2 came out it certainly wasn't perfect, I started playing on release, kept playing for 3 months but went back to DAoC because I couldn't stand having to kill another 5 million scarecrows and gnolls, apart from that there were a lot of other issues. Now EQ2 has changed, matured and has grown into a very nice proper MMO. You don't have to like it on a personal level (I still don't) but I CAN understand why others do.
This poll is a democratic thing and thefore there will be a lot of people who won't like the outcome of these polls, tough luck imo (no, mine didn't win either).

McDonalds sells billions of burgers, a fine quality restaurant serves a few thousand guests every year, this doesn't make McD superior in quality.
millions and millions of people like stupid TV programs like Big Brother or any other band wagon 'reality show', this doesn't make it a quality product.
"The general public" has a way to not be bothered with quality but with shiny, short attention span stuff, the fact that WOW has 8 million subscribers doesn't make it a quality product, it just means they have quality marketing. Mind you, I'm NOT saying it's crap but if you start basing the quality of a product on how many people use it, you're in for some odd results
Im not basing the games on quality, but the facts are that all the games that are so called listed as favourite, have been for months bashed on their own official forums or others, leading to falling subs due to nerfs or dissapointing expansions or sequals.
Fact is the other games could be superior or not, but simple fact is why do they have in the 100s or 10s of thousands of subscribers? Please dont start saying it due to marketing, the other games have been around for along time, so i presume the majority of haters on this site like 95% would have played them, yet each game listed has a measly section of subs.
If the so called games are so superior to wow, then why do they not play them? Please dont give the crap its about marketing, only so much marketing can do, people played wow and play it beacuse it is recommended by other people as being a superior game to other already out.. All the other games are still out there that they can chose to play. If the other so called superior games were great im sure people would be still playing it. The simple reason why all the other games are flat out on their knees waiting for the KO punch is that at the time when they were worund there was not much variety and people were stuck with what they had, now all of a sudden variety and a market leader, and everyone is a so called expert, i know lets go back to the time when there was no money spent on mmos, and nobody even knew about online gaming, and you were stuck with 2-3 games max of a choice. that souds good, hell why not even go back to black and white Screens.
I for one and glad blizzard and wow has opened up a whole new door, and has given millions of new people the abiltiy to try online gaming, oh sorry some of you people might not like this, wow has allowed for companies now to invest millions of doallrs intoonline gaming and sites and commuinites, in the hope that they can get some of the pie.
Fastest growing sector on gaming is online PC MMo gaming, want to know why beacuse blizzard opened it up for all. If 95% had your way we would still by in the days of only a few people playing online gaming.
Fair points, as I've stated before people will bash stuff to feed their own ego, it's best to ignore those morons as much as possible.
Personally I play games a lot, I don't play a lot of games tho. What I mean is that I pick one quality product and stick to it till it has run it's course. I've played DAoC for almost 5 years, I've played CoX for a long while and now I play EVE online for more than a year now. It took me a few tries to find these gems though. To me these 3 are at the top of what MMO's should be about. Funnily enough each of these 3 is very different from the other, they can't be compared to eachother at all yet I like them equally.
The ONLY similarity they have is this; they are/were ground breaking.
- DAoC for it's seamless integration of PVE and PVP with a story to it; you loved to hate the other realms. The amount of options it gave you, the fact that it took skill, preparation and planning to compete. This wasn't done on this scale before in any other game, heck it STILL is unsurpassed PVP wise.
- CoX because it's funky, it doesn't try to be sophisticated, it's made to be fun, the graphics are great and the degree of customization will probably be unmatched for a LOOOONG time.
- EVE because.. well, it's EVE. Can't be explained, only experienced heh
WOW isn't groundbreaking really, the only groundbreaking thing about it is that it really has no faults; it worked properly at launch, it delivers a smooth gameplay. Still to me it lacks a lot, it lacks the highs and lows other games give me. It's aimed for the general public, it is in fact like a big mac; a quick and tasty fix if you feel a bit hungry, but you shouldn't make it into your daily dinner as it's not high quality enough and the taste get boring since it's one big mash of different stuff garnished with strong, overpowered chemical sauses.
It's fun, but only for so long. As such to me it fails at being a long term MMORPG prospect.
I wish I was back to those old days. BLizzard may have opened online gaming but its a totally different MMorpg product to what I like.
What they do they do very well. That is scripted repetitive quests aimed for people who don't want any mental stimulation or challenge.
I am sick of grind fests. Give me excitement, give me a chance to change the world, give me risk v reward when I leave a guarded town.
I will give PoBS a shot but I am waiting and praying for Darkfall.

No mmorpg is a long term prospect, thats why most games listed here have a few thousaund players still or 100 thousand still. Its obvious wows subs will fall as newer and better games get realeased, thats the way of the world all games will die eventually. Like i said if any of the games listed as so called superior to wow, then why are they not still the high quality meal filling millions of peoples stomachs?
Reason is due to the fact they once were, and to a certain extent they still satisfy a handful of players in mmo terms, but they are not going to satisfy new gamers wanting more. Like i said also before, most of you would want it that only a handful of people could still play these games. Sorry to burt the majoiry of your littles bubbles, but the days when 100k subs satisfied gamers or companies are over. maybe we should go back to the days when you had to type /quit to actually quit a game. Lol and im sure most of you so called haters will say yes lets go back to those days, well those days are still upon you in Daoc, yet only 2-3k people play it. Fcae it these games were high quality meals in their time satisfied with a handful of subs, but blizzard opened the door for new investment and opprtunities for millions.

you have to see through that, EVE is a very complex game with a more than steep learning curve. Most people will tell you that EVE is about mining and missionrunning, but I think we already established that the majority of people aren't always right
Personally I've never done any more missions after my starting period, and I can't (and won't) mine even if my life depended on it, yet I make cash easily enough to be able to fund my modest desires in the game. Simply by being smart about things and by seizing opportunities when you see them.
As a starter you can make your first 15 million in a few hours and make some 5-10 million on a daily basis without really working for it. i know this because I started a new character, properly playing him instead of twinking him using my 'main'. All it takes is the willingness to read and find out stuff rather than just followign the pack and not being bothered by trying to find your own things.
EVE has many different layers of gameplay; there's the miner/mission runner/manufacturer who never sees low sec, conflict or proper gameplay, this is the boring part of EVE yet a ton of people do it and like it. Then there's the small scale conflict/rivalry where you try to push ahead by winning over others, and those others try to do the same to you. at the end there's the grand scale of things where it's anarchy, politics and deceit which rule the universe (literally) with all the drama, problems, highs and lows that come from having only a handful of leaders shape the gaming world for thousands of their followers.
It's grand and unsurpassed, the trick is to not be caught in the "high sec miner/mission runner/manufacturer who has no graps of the rest of the universe" paradigm. This can be difficult even more when peopel tell you that's what EVE is all about, it's not and they're very much wrong.

- First you state that everyone who says WOW is bad is an idiot because WOW has 8 million subscribers who can't be wrong, I dispute that idea and you drop it.
- then you state that every just hops from game to game and that they're morons because of that which opinions shouldn't be valued. I state that I play games long term and give you examples of the games I play using that 'strategy'. Suddenly you change your mind again and you bash me for not wanting new, revolutionary and ground breaking games just because I play a select amount of games for a long time if I find that they suit me.
