40K w/o the space marines

bebopdrumsbebopdrums Member UncommonPosts: 168
ive been thinking alot about how this game is going to be handled, and an interesting idea came to me. Any one who knows anything about 40k knows that the entire universe of 40k is defined by the armies that u can play as. be it the tau or eldar or space marines or whatever u prefer. what an interesting twist it would be if we werent allowed to play a space marine or a tau fire warrior. because as an mmo, 40k is being given an oppportunity to  flesh out a huge part of the lore that is somewhat lacking. Id like to create a sickly diseased ganger in the underground wastes of necromunda, struggling to get enough credits to buy my own ship and maybe fly to valhalla, or Mordia. instead of forcing every aspect and character of the 40k universe to be some kind of alien super soldier meant only for war, alllow us to see what LIVING in the world of 40k is like. all i know is massive battles, and of course thats the point, but there is so much lore in the books that can be opened to us in a medium like this. i thought how cool it would be if u cant just choose, space marine, on the character screen. i doubt that this would ever happen, but i think it would be a great intelligent way to bring the 40k universe to new light.

Most probably you ll be able to play the 2 races (plus new ones), but not the respective professions.

In short Marines and Chaos warriors would be NPC's.

    I guess

I don't know much about the Warhammer 40K universe but aren't Space Marines the staple of the whole thing? I mean, yes there are other races and classes but, from my understanding, without the Space Marines there would be no Warhammer 40K.

Besides which, who wouldn't want to play a kick ass Space Marine? Why would I want to play as some "sickly diseased ganger in the underground wastes of necromunda" when I can't play as a total badassness that is the Space Marines?

I can't stress this enough: without Space Marines I won't even touch this game.

hmmm i couldnt disagree more. if all you want is to play a space marine than play dawn of war. explain to me what kind of sandbox type roleplaying goes into to being a space marine? All they do is fight and die. thats all there is to it. if thats the route that they go with this game im going to be really bummed. i probably wont buy it and ill just have to wait for a mature presentation. again, we have dawn of war. we dont need another all out massacre of the 41millenium. ive been playing the tabletop game as a spacemarine for 18 years, maybe its time to give us a dfferent perspective of the 40k universe.

The whole W40K universe revolves around conflict and massacre, why change it in an MMORPG? I would be greatly dissapointed if instead of PvP-centric game we get another raid-fest set in a W40K universe.

Edit: I guess we both have different opinions on the matter but Warhammer 40K without space marines is like Warcraft without the orcs.

i wish i could play space marines for like their uber armor saves...or tau fire warriors for their range..would be lame to have a 40k game without em.

i dont disagree that space marines are a staple of the universe. my only point is that weve already been given the opportunties to play these characters in that way. by no means should space marines be omitted from the game world, i just dont think we should be able to play them. and if we are, it will say ALOT about what kind of its going to be. MMO supersoldier FPS yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy.....so original. not.

obviously i highly doubt my point would ever be carried out . its simply ridiculous from an iP stand point. but it would still be really cool imo

those elements could be easily added to the game with out playing the role of an actual space marine or tau firewarrior. power armor and pulse rifles SHOULD be loot and gear that our characters can equip.

the thing is you dont understand original. it would be original since it would be based on the 40k system  with hopefully all the playable races that everyone is attuned to. i wouldnt play it if i couldnt play as  my favorite race.

Oh yeah, I'd love to be a sickly diseased mutant hobo, instead of an elite battle trooper.... haha, NOT. Dark Angels Space Marines forever, bitches! Repent!! For tomorrow you die!

you are misinterpeting what im saying. im not saying that u shouldnt be able to play as tau or ork or eldar or what have you. im saying u shouldnt be forced into playing a SOLDIER. pretty much all we know about 40k is how each races army is constructed...the name of their ranks and vehilcles and such. Im ALL for these elements being in the game after all ive been a 40k fan since a child. but this is the first edium in which they CAN add more than just a races millatry statistics. for example id like to play a tau air caste member or maybe an eldar crafter. because of the nature of 40k everything is about war, but there is so much in the books about what else is going on in the 40k millenium. id like to be a part of the other part too.

If you just started the game as a simple human, eldar, etc... And could work towards being a terminator, marine, inquisitor,  farseer, howling banshee, whatever,  that would be pretty cool. But if I could never become any of these because that would break a sandbox, well, I think that would break the game... I don't want to play a civilian that crafts until the planet I am on gets purged... I want to be a hero, not a serf. I can get paid in the real world to work in a factory, but I can't smash genestealers no matter how hard I try.
  • bobblerbobbler Member UncommonPosts: 810
oic....well if i could work my way upand eventually be a terminator...i would play lol

It will be interesting to see how they do it. They can get away with it in Warhammer (WAR) playing whatever race and class etc from a RP perspective. However in 40k if your talking RP a space marine is basically an automaton programmed to kill due to extensive condtioning and training. Also there are numerous chapters how will they handle that, or if they do allow space marines will a clan/guild become known as a chapter (I hope not). Space Marines are extreme zealots they make paladins from D&D and other fantasy games look like heretics.

If they allow people to play Space Marines and do what they want then it destroys the lore.

exactly my point. which is WHY i hope we cant play as "space marines"...because if we can then it will limit the game to pretty just another mmofps. any for anyone who knows more about the 40k universe than just dawn of war, this would be a shame.

My thoughts exactly. Warhammer 40K is about war, plain and simple.

Burn the Heretic, Kill the Mutant, Purge the Unclean!

thats what its all about, fighting for the Emperor, or fighting for the gods... Or just a bad ass Necron or Eldar bitch..

they have so much potential, by going with all out violence, blood, gore, and lots of warhammer Lore.. that will attract the core audience and interested mmo'ers.   If they could include all the races that would be awesome...    even be able to work ur way up to Librarian in Terminator armor ... or  Chaplain of the 13th chapter Space wolves....40k just rocks..

oh please. spoken like a little kid with your little final fantasy picture in the corner. why play an mmo then? why are you even this site? mmoRPG...RPG...ROLE playing...if you cannot roleplay its just halo 3 with more people. you all are acting like i am trying to ruin the 40k world. heck, ive been playing 40k for longer than some of u have been alive so cut me some slack and drop the crybaby emo attitude. you'll probably get what u want anyway. games are being geared for children these days after all.

sounds just like another game...what was it called...hmmm...oh yea!! dawn of war!! ever played it?

whats the POINT of making an MMO like that when there is already an incredible game under the same IP that offers exactly that and more??

obviously i know that youve played DoW, didnt mean to be overly sarcastic >_<

'. I had the first edition rogue trader, there were no army lists, you rolled on tables to determine gear. It is normally children that call others children. I imagine the game will be more inline with what I want than what you want. However it would be good if you could achieve your objectives within the game, but just because you don't want to be a space marine, no one else should be able to, is weird. Fancy playing Warhammer 40k to be a Space Marine, these kids today, it's the drugs I tell you!

Dawn of War is an RTS... does anyone think the playstyle of World Of Warcraft and Warcraft are one and the same?

the sims 40k? come on...please...was SWG the SIms starwars because you couldnt play as a stormtrooper? was it lame because it gave u all the options ever in mmo to do what you wanted in the starwars universe, despite the fact that the entire series centered around civil war? to assume that im part of a"sandbox crowd" of morons that likes our games boring and dull is an offensive presumption. plus the wrong one to make on a site dedicated in a large part to games like that.

You speak of SWG like it is poster child for "Wanna make a successful MMORPG, do it this way"... Make a niche game, and then change it so it alienates your niche. This is an "agree to disagree" discussion. You want to save up to buy a space ship, so therefore everyone else must do the same thing. That's the part I don't like. I don't want to be Hans Solo a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. I wanna be an Eldar from the Ulthwe Craftworld who can, if played the right way, become a Farseer (that may be aiming too high, but you get what I mean). I'm not an SWG refugee looking for a new home, I'm a Warhammer 40k fan looking for a home.
