The 18th Legion (screenies)

Felipe_LFelipe_L Member Posts: 5

The 18th legion, the largest Roman roleplaying guild in Roma Victor recently had a muster of its forces at an in-game event (market festival) to provide protection to the shoppers from any barbarian raiders that may have decided to come ruin the festival. Quite a few people asked me to post screenshots of it on these forums so here they are:

The brave soldiers of the 18th legion in formation before the opening speech.

A salute to citizen Marius for his initiative to organise the in-game event (market festival).

Every soldier in these screenshots are real players with their uniforms on consisting of segmentatas, pila, gladii, towershields, helmets and Roman caligae.

You see, now this is why I love this game!

Despite countless flaws (sorry RBL), you can't do that kind of stuff in any other game.

How much of that equipment was made by player crafters?

A few months ago such a screenshort would have beheld blokes in tunics with spears and wooden bucklers. Nice to see the game progess.

I am not in the 18th but I am going to say:

All of it, most of it can't be bought anyways, and the ones that can be, are very expensive.

Very nice post Felix and glad u did it instead of Me ...

Anyhow to the people who seem interested in RV, this is the reason why RV is just so much differant then all other MMO's...  Although there are still needed fixes and bugs, RV does have a great concept to it...

Very impressive, I wish the free population of Caledonia (barbarians) could count those numbers.

So if anyone is planning to join the game, go free! To even out the sides, we got mudhuts too.

Yes, all armor, and weapons were crafted with the exception of 2 hamatas which were bought at quite great expense. They all have a standard uniform code which they are equipped with depending on their rank. If you look closely at the right flank, the men there have different equipment, they are the legion's Auxiliary unit (Cohors I Britannica), and the rest are regular legionaries as you can see from the difference in uniform.

The game got off to a slow start and every man fought in barbarian-like equipment, but just as every civilization starts out small and weak, in time we grew as the game expanded, recruiting, crafting armor and equipment to be to where we are now. But we are far from finished our tasks, weve still got a long way to go just like the game itself does.

Did Romilus have to do laps for not saluting?

As I have been preaching on this site since game launch, Roma Victor is a game that serious MMO types can sink their teeth into and enjoy for a very long time.  Yes, crafting can be a grind at times and the more complicated items take a long time to make, but the huge feeling of accomplishment when you complete something makes it all worth it.

What's behind the photos posted above is the many months of work that the miners, blacksmiths, carpenters, and armorers of the 18th Legion put in to master their respective skills, build up an industrial infrastructure, and then carefully craft all of the items you see worn and carried by their proud soldiers.  Vlad, Felix, Glorious, Artimus, and others have done a fine job leading this legion.

Not shown in the photos was the 25 or so civilians, guarded by the legions, who set up "shops" in the town forum and commenced buying and selling of goods for a couple hours after the speech and ceremony.  There was some serious server issues at the start which delayed things for about a half hour, but things cleared up and the activity commenced.  My own guild did some very brisk business and we had a great time talking with everybody.  Later that evening, there were gladiator matches in the Arena with open betting going on.  I think a record was set as one match up had more than 10,000 sesterces wagered on it.

It took us quite a few tries to get them all to salute at once but Romilius wasnt paying much attention, his reputation as a trouble-maker and foul-mouthed legionnaire shows quite well here.

Not very many currently, but it is increasing steadily, and I'll bet a huge chunk of old players will return with the escalation update (since RB will be sending out mails to all their customers, which they haven't done before).

I attended the festival of Renewal today, and had a great time! So it's definitely still a fun game. :-) The free for all brawl was my favorite!

It's your choice. It's a choice if you want realism and historical authencity or the standard mmorpg (with some twists of course).

Well you obviously have not checked out AoC yet, because if AoC is anything, its not a standard mmo; its going outside box for current mmos, especially with combat..if you like Roma Victors combat you should love AoC's 6 point combat system..

Also when you use that word authentic does that mean roman legions fought naked? Because i know not one of those players wearing that segmenta will wear that armor into actual battle...I can list sooo many things that RV is missing to unwarrent its so called "authencity"..

Roma Victor was just "a few" years ahead of AoC regarding combat. ;)

And that's one of the reasons I started playing RV and still play it. And RVs system is still more realistic nonetheless, they've just added a touch of mainstream on top of AoC.

I just love it how you make those assumptions on how their legionnaires fight! It's brilliant!

Indeed, brilliant!  He hit the nail right on the head...

But SWG it is useless argueing with them, especialy Zakke, he is KFR's buddy he defends him and trys to promote the game for them I "think" mabe he was one of the original investors or testers.(you know the only ones RB listens to)

But reguardless I can assure you we will be seeing them in AOC because eventualy they will want to play a fun game.  One where you actualy use the equipment you buy, cuz it is not considered a waste of time and money.

More assumption, I love it! It's not only brilliant to make arguments based on assumptions, it's genial!

I think I'll just return to my hunting trip in RV now, I'm having great fun! And from all these wolf pelts I'll probably ask some friends to make me a set of nice fur clothes.

yeah from reading the RV forums Zakke is KFR's byatch. He also talks a lot for someone who isn't active in the game. All i've seen him do is promote this piece of lard game.

Wouldn't it be more fun if their were other players out there with you tho? lol

Or mabe you run into a NPC bandit group now and then?

I am sure it will be a handsome fur tunic too, let me know when the get it done would like to see it... what about 3 or 4 days is all it will take right?   If that player plays like a normal person that is.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could drop off your furs and the guy could say, "It will take 30 mins for a QL 10 will cost ya 50ses, 1hr for a QL 50 runs 150ses and 2 hrs for a QL99 that will cost ya 300ses.

    jdag,

I haven't played much due to my priorities lying elsewhere (University), but I still love this piece of lard game as you so nicely put it and enjoy spending much of my free time discussing it. But now it's easter holiday - so I can finally play.

Anyway, questioning my credibility does you more bad than good, it's a cheap tactic when you have nothing more to come with. Sorry, but RV is still a good game and will become much much better in the future (because there are still some major improvements on the horizon) however much you hate it. ;-)

Well, the other players were in Erring, I'd much rather hunt alone and have all the furs for myself. As long as I can handle the dangers that is, so far I've been fine.

I'm sure we'll have more varied npc encounters in the future, KFR has implied that it is to come. Just wait!

Actually, I was thinking about a fur kilt, fur boots, a hide shirt and a fullkilt made of fur. Tunics are for Romans.

Since my long lasting friends in the tuatha (a guild) allready have a large stock of most items I'll probably get it all as soon as I'm back in Erring and can pay with my furs and some money. So yeah, you described how it is pretty well.

Otherwise I'm fine with waiting, I'd much rather have quality clothes than rags.

I'll be sure to post some screenshots when I got my new clothes!

I am actually kinda looking forward to you being disappointed in another game, as I am sure you will be by AOC...so you can go flame their fourms
