600k pre orders for LOTRO?

lotrovault.ign.com/View.php

As far as these guys are concerned, Friday, Open Beta, is launch day… and they are psyched about where this game is headed. With a possible 600k heading into Open Beta, and 1 Million beta keys expected to be added over the course of OB, this team is looking at one of the largest playerbases that an NA-based MMOG has ever seen. Unlike several recent MMOGs, this OB will be an actual Open Beta. Not an Open Beta … for the first 50,00 people. . Not an Open Beta … for whoever is a subscriber of service x. . Not an Open Beta … for … well, you get the picture. Want in? It’s a few clicks away. No strings. One of the game magazines’ upcoming issues will even have an OB CD packaged with it, as well! When asked about servers, the answer from the devs was that they’ve got plenty, and they’re pretty much a flick of a switch away.

How they get that  600k number? pre orders? If they already have 600k pre orders for NA servers this means this game will beat WOW numbers on NA servers, on next months.

    Shocking if true.

LOTRO is the #1 best seller on Amazon's PC Games.

I would have expected most of the sales to come after release, but I guess the founders discount is generating a lot of sales.

I can't wait to see actual sales figures.

Yeah, been #1 at Gamestop/EBGames as well for a long time (as far as PC titles go).

I think this one will challenge Turbine and skyrocket upwards, leavin git in the top 3 mmorpgs of all times :)

But I have been called a fanboi, so I'm probably blowing my own horn or something like that... :)

I'm not surprised, it's a solid game that improves on WoW's game mechanics, has a few interesting new ideas and most significantly, has the best IP any game could ever ask for. It's not with out a problems, content is a bit on the light side. I would hope they are prepared to deliver expansions fairly soon - free add-ons would be nice too. The game is reasonably bug free for a new launch too. Although I still get a few client crashes, more than I would tolerate outside of beta.

maybe they get the magic one million subscribers at release.

Heh. Way more than I expected. I was hoping for around 250K so that it was guaranteed longevity. I am pleasantly surprised, though not shocked. I bet all the naysayers "predicting" 15oK subscriptions are sitting down to a nice helping of crow now, heh.

Unfortunately this might just be a flash in the pan scenario, with no true end game(or so I've been told) the inevitable powerlevelers will fly to max level and wonder what to do from there. Then again this might be the silent majority wanting something more than just the standard raid until you drop end game that most current MMOs provide.

I'm actually quite surprised. I think it has the worst IP of all time - It WOULD be the best IP IF it had a New Line License. I just found playing BETA terrible - running into Elrond only to find out 10 minutes later that this NPC actually WAS Elrond (sure didn't look like him).

Without the locations, characters and music as it appears in the movies the game simply looks awkward to me

For the older crowd maybe a small impact on sales. For the younger crowd, I'd be surprised if they even were taught or read Tolkein in High School these days. The schools seem more interested in pushing them out the door with a free diploma rather than actually teaching these days.

I hope they have a lot of servers sitting in standby, otherwise the frustration of the ques could have a bad effect on future sales.

Ironic...WoW gets over a million something players the only excuse anti-WoW posters can come up is that majority of the people are either kids (Narrow-minded generalization) or Asian Gold farmers. (Racism)

Yet, LotRO is rumor to have 600k subscribers and the fanboys (most of them whom dislike WoW) can't even conceive the notion that the majority of people making up their game could be kids also. WoW is allowed to be consider a kiddie game with immature population and LotRO isn't? So what facts or number do you have to support that the players over the age of 18 and are mature-minded?

Expect a lot less people to buy the game in retail because they will constantly feel theyre lower class customers than the others and get shafted on a variety of things, the main one being the subscription price, which will be an absolute no-go for many people if they know half the population pays less each month than them (or nothing at all with lifetime accounts)

I guess having read the book half a dozen times before Peter Jackson even started making the movies gives me a different perspective. I don't filter my expectations through his imagination. Turbine has done a great job realizing Middle Earth, the scale isn't realistic but the art direction captures the essence of what is in the book. (For what it's worth they fixed the land-surfing Elrond.)

    on Edit:

I believe EA holds the game rights to the movies. They got the last dollar out of me sometime before the turn of the century.

No way are 600,000 people going to be playing on 7 servers. That's 85k+ per server and I can't see them handling that level of load. If Turbine had 600,000 perorders right now, they be scrambling to add a lot more servers. My guess is they have 7 * 12,500 for 87,500 preorders. I mean, they only had 300,000 people sign up for closed beta and I can't see 2-4 times more people playing open beta. Heck, of the 100 plus people in my Guild who played closed beta, only 5 have expressed interest in open beta.

The article from which that number (600k) from seems legitimate. Also in that article is the statement from Turbine that they have plenty more servers ready to go at the flick of a switch. Games companies get reports on what their current pre-order numbers are, believe it or not, and the smart ones plan accordingly. Just because they have given the names of 7 servers does not mean that those are the only ones they have ready to go.

I dont see them making WOW's mistake..................

WOW underestimated the popularity of the game and didnt have enough servers at release so they spent a bunch of time and money playing catch up. Knowing they will have at least 600k players already will help them determine the number of servers they will need to accomodate all of us without waiting in long ques.

Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

That's the FIRST....FIRST.  seven servers. NOT all servers.

Announcing the First Seven LOTRO Servers!

    Greetings everyone!

As Turbine's Open Beta draws ever closer, we’ve heard you say you want to start getting organized for the big day! Now you can pick which servers you’ll meet your friends and kinship members on. Although this is not a complete list, here are the first seven servers which will be available to our players when Open Beta begins for players in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The first seven LOTRO servers are, in alphabetical order (drumroll please!):

    Brandywine

    Elendilmir

    Gladden

    Landroval

    Meneldor

    Silverlode

    Windfola

There is a completely different mindset that the powerlevelers are going to have to wrap their minds around.  See in wow, if I remember right, the quickest way to level was to do quests from like 1 to 20 or so then grind mobs til the lower 50's.  Of course while you were in a quest hub you would take whatever quests involved killing in the nearby area just to add a bonus on the xp and maybe an item or two.  But for the majority of a player's time in wow it was faster to level by grinding.

In Lotro grinders are going to find a bit of a surprise.  you get squat for xp for the mobbies you kill.  Its the quests that actually pay off the big dividends.  And unless you know the areas well you will end up doing a helluva lot of running around and backtracking.  The Open Beta for lotro is level capped at 15.  So you are kinda limited in what you can do and what you can experience before the actual release date hits.  Those that have been in closed beta will obviously have a leg up with hitting the cap within a day or two on at least one character.  Those that havent been in the closed beta will assuredly take a bit longer with their first characters.

Now with Amazon and other places I do not doubt that there are at least, if not more, than 600k preorders made... but a good number of those people will probably cancel their preorders at some point.  Either way, against my expectations, LOTRO seems to be the next sure-fire hit in the mmoscene.  And thats not a bad thing at all.  It is a solid and entertaining game and they have done their best to stick to the canon.

I'm not sure what to say to such a low-brow comment like this.  You do realize that the movies were based on BOOKS!?  Try reading one sometime.
