I'm sorry to say, but when I played it (3 weeks ago) it was glitchy, complicated, and annoying.
The game had many promising aspects, including a variety or races and classes, but what disappointed me is that all the races couldnt be all the classes. The character customization was also pretty low grade, unnoticable stuff, like head width. There were only 3 different skin types, most of it was miniscule adjustments. Also, the movement of the avatars seemed to be really blocky and detracted from the gameplay.
Now, the combat was also fairly lame. WoW is the only game I have played that has made the same reptitive button pushing into something mildly entertaining (If someone knows why this is, tell me).
The UI, frames for windows and such also detracted from gameplay. The text and everything almost exuded an aura of unrefined unpleasantness.
But, the two things that were hugely entertaining. Diplomacy and Crafting. Diplomacy was like some sort of card-playing crack for me. There was something basely pleasing about masterfully (well, sort of) throwing around cards that imitated a conversation. The crafting was also really in depth, if somewhat ridiculous. Too many problems arose, and the crafting process took way too much time to be an actively fun thing to do. It was tedious, but somehow gratifying.
I didn;t exactly get past that spot, everything else was the typical wind and grind. Anyone else have something to say about this that should probably belong in the Vanguard forum?
I cannot hear you over the SHUT THE FUCK UP!

And I don't want to hear anything about "I don't believe in vampires" because *I* don't believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes, and what *I* saw is ******* vampires! "
I have no idea what's going on at Sigil right now though.
One day they make a change that drives away casuals, and the next day they add a change that drives away vanbois.
They're screwed if they do, screwed if they don't right now. Not sticking to the target audience they originally claimed (the "core") and releasing early have pretty much damned the game though.

Life sucks, buy a helmet.
your poll is a little inaccurate.
SOE's only involvement in this game is server hosting and technical assistance.
If you wanna blame a company on Vanguard's failures, blame Sigil.
Im not defending SOE in anyway (good lord...not after what they did to SWG) but you gotta blame the right people
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
The second option in your poll should read "Vangaurd, Sigil and Brad suck. Never again will I ever buy a game from Sigil, SOE or some dev named Brad."
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

Looking Forward To: SW:TOR
What I think completely destroys the game is trying to make it too detailed. XD
I only hope that this incident causes SoE to lose alot of future customers in other games too; They are without a doubt the worst company to date, even worse than EA, atleast EA releases a quality game every now and then, SoE has really gone down the toilet, its completely about the money for them now, no other company has abandoned their customers and their sense of quality for profit like SoE has, not even EA.
As for why grinding is "fun" in WoW; It's because its so damn easy, the game practically throws exp at you by mmo standards. After awhile though, you realize that your character isn't really progressing all that much per level, they just made it easier to get each level to give you a false sense of accomplishment. EXP is obviously important, but as far as progression goes, it takes a back seat role in WoW, and believe me, it is extremely easy to level in that game. Compared to most mmo's, you actually gain very little progression per level, but you level alot. Hell someone hit the new level cap in BC what, a day after it's release?
I found it a bit insulting really; It's like the took a normal exp gain system, gave you 1/5 of the bonus from leveling, but made you level 5 times faster. So essentially, your character isn't really progressing per level very much, they just did it so you can easily keep getting the leveling sound and see the number for your level increase more often, make the game pat you on the back more often to make you feel better or something, but apparently it works.
Just think about it, what if it took 5 times aslong to level in WoW as it does now, but you got 5 times the bonus per level? It be exactly the same when it comes to how long it takes to actually progress, but you would get bored because it seem to take longer to you, only because you don't get to see the game do a little dance for you all the time. (yes thats a metaphorical statement). Thats why people call it so noob friendly, take the same old tried and true formula, but make it clap and dance and look pretty to satisfy the easily amused. If anything the level cap in WoW should be 100 or maybe even more for how easy it is to level, it should take a very very long time before ANYONE hits the level cap and runs out of things todo. I guess they just want you to reroll so the game can start clapping for you all over again. WoW is about as "softcore" as it gets.
For how fast you level, you would think they would have put alot more focus into high level content, as in, that would be their main focus, but eventually you will realize that WoW was made to attract new players in droves, but does very little to hold on to players in the long run. It's aimed at the "casual" mmo crowd, because they won't play much so they don't need tons of endgame content. It's the first MMO i have played that actually ends up punishing you for playing alot, because you get near the end and have nothing intresting todo anymore. The more you play, the faster you run out of content; There isn't all that much content at all, it just paints what it does have really nicely to make it seem diffrent, just like the exp system.
I agree totally. If they would have stuck to their original idea they planned 3+ years ago they would have a loyal player base. Sure it wouldnt be as bigs as WoWs but it would have been better than what they have now. You cannot have a successful MMO by trying to cater to everyone. I couldnt even make it through beta because I knew they would screw it up and the "core" gameplay changed way too much from what was stated a long long time ago. Screw you sigil. Thanks for misleading a bunch of loyal fans.
If you dont think SOE has a hand in this game, your are surely mislead. Money talks and money takes control. Everyone knows that. Dont believe anything Brad or sigil said about the deal. They were just doing damage conrol and further misleading people.
Enigma you are so wrong. SOE is funding them. Hence, they have a big say what direction the game goes in.
welll.. I played since launch, and its on the steady upwards. Even the gms are invovled. When there was major problems we've had the lead GM come into craft chat (a player made channel) and talk with us for a while about problems were having and what the gms can help with and what they cant.
Silius(Crafting designer) at first was rather closed minded about "his vision" about crafting, but is opening up and some really good changes are being made.
Diplomats are getting new stuff every patch, its stupid rates. Every patch they have some new aspect to play with, and on the horizon they have some diplo only rewards to make leveling a diplo worth while.
umm... The stability has gotten better, one patch a while ago I gained over 10 fps, which was nice that my little paper weight was able to hit 30 fps on not quite the lowest settings, the memory leak is killing people but every patch it seems to be getting better.
its deffinatly on the way up in terms of quality. Boats are fun.
I think Vanguard will turn out great. If you really want to play Vanguard at its finest, and your a picky person, Id wait a month or two when more is done and then you might not be able to find as much to complain about.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
I've stopped playing mmorpg for a while. I've spent years playing mmo's that are all the same. I just can't be bothered with anymore. Vanguard is a nice mmorpg tho.
I got up to 268 skill diplo and now i just cant see any point playing.
30+ Million Dollar AAA Budget requires it to appeal to a mainstream audience.
Everquest these days, and original EQ'ers are in fact a small percentage of people playing MMO's. (550k top subscriber numbers compared to over 15 million people playing MMO's now, and more than half the people playing WoW)
Not saying that VG need 8 million subscribers, but with that kind of a budget, I dont see how it can possibly be a success as a niche game, which is why I see things getting pared down, and why it's going thru many of the changes that it currently is. (As long time followers would say that the "vision has been changed")
Salvaged? Sure, it could still turn out to be a very solid game, but I think it's release killed any chance it has of becoming a mainstream success, with a million or more subscriptions. Especially in the face of the WoW juggernaught, and other A-list titles that are due for release, and promise to offer stiff competition for the mainstream gamers dollars.
What the hell is wrong with you people. The game hasn't even been out 6 months yet, and people are "done with it". Funny, but did any play WoW. It had one of the worst launches I've ever been privy to. Buggy as hell, log in waits of 2 hours.. why I even remember the fact that the loot bug last almost a year. Now it's one of, if not the most popular mmo on the market. It even took them about 6-12 months to get shit straight.
Jesus jumping ficking christ. Give the guys a break. Give them some time. if you don't like it, don't play it and shut the fuck up. Why does some jack off leaving the game have to be such a big drama.
I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just saying, I have been playing the game since the first day, it's changed a lot since then. I now get frame rates over 40+ (up from about 15 at launch) and the game is running much better. They have had some big ass patches and have obviously been working their asses off to make this right. Give Sigil some time.
The only major problem that stopped me from playing WoW when it came out (please note it wasn't my first MMORPG, EQ1 at the time Velious came out was) was the waiting times to actually log into a server because there were so many people trying to get in. The game played great right away. NO frame rate issues that I can remember, it was crowded yeah but it has just came out.
NO ONE should have to give a game "6 months" or any amount of time to get its shit together. Once money changes hands it's fair game. Bugs is one thing, waiting to get into a server is actually a interesting if not good thing since it shows a LOT of interest. Not being able to actually play a game is something else.
These people had 30 million dollars and several years to create this game. People don't have to give them jack. They had all the time they were allowed during the development of the game and all that money. Its not the players, buyers and potential buyers fault they didn't deliver and there is no reason at all anyone should give them a break.
This is business. They are providing a game, a service and it isn't up to par. They should be called on it and constantly until they get their act together. If not only for that but so other developers and those thinking of making mmorpgs get the message that this type of thing isn't going to be tolerated any longer and should never be.
As I said in my post. If you don't like the game, don't play. It's that fucking simple. So you're right, you don't have to give them jack. I play the game for a few hours a day. I don't crash, don't expeirience a ton of issues and end up having a great time. So I pay them for that good time. If the game was running like shit, I wouldn't play, but you know what else I wouldn't do? Bitch about it. I would cancel my plan and move on.
What I'm saying is that if you believe the game has some promise but needs to work out the bugs, give it so time and come back. If you're not happy, leave again. It's that simple.
No game is perfect. Far from it. Head to the forums on any mmo and you will find the greatest bitching you have ever seen. Even in the golden shit bowl of games (WoW) you will find MAJOR bitching in every class forum about balancing issues. You will find bitching in the tech forums for performance issues, you will find bitching in the .......well, you get the point.
Vanguard is not much different from most other mmo's i have played at release. It was a little more rough around the edges, but very playable for me. Full of bugs and bitching, full of people writting gramatic post about leaving, getting their money back and lawsuits...lol
He moved to wow a month following launch, and two days ago was the first time I ever heard him quietly say, "I found a bug."
WoW and Vanguard are not related in any way other than time line. WoW *never* got a review from a writer who gave it a low score because they couldn't even load the client. You can invoke WoW all you like, but your argument is a red herring, and a smelly one at that. I don't even play WoW, yet I am smart enough not to try VG at this moment, and that is simply based on the idea that I know how to read 3rd party reviews before I shell out $50 for a game. If you pay this for a game, plus $15 a month, you should damn well expect it to be up to snuff.
All WoW had to do was add servers, can V say the same?
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.
I like to point out how bad SoE are as much as any other ex SWG vet that quit with the NGE but while SoE staffers did work on Vanguard surely they were under the direction of Sigil staff and following the Sigil design documents?
If you have been lied to about your game,
And now you totally hate it,
You have to face the facts and realise,
You've probably been McQuaided!
Soo, is Vanguard a EQ2(poor at release but improved and gained subscribers) or a Horizons(flunked but had it's fans never going more than 10k)
