just found out MMOs are quite nice but cant figure out which one to play coz I just got internet recently.

Lord of The Rings - fresh game and friendly athmosphere.

WoW is certainly the most new-player friendly of those two.

    Very different games, uncompareable.

EVE Online, Aliens meets Blade Runner meets Elite for the amiga.

WoW, all the best from older MMO's. Polished and easy to like.

Beginner MMO, WOW is by far the most noobish of MMOs. My 5 year old son can play my hunter for me. Really easy game if you are new. For us who have played various mmos  WOW is the E-Z mode mmo of all time.

Wow is on the decline and LotRO is just beginning.  LotRO is very noob friendly.  LotRO is a PVE quest driven game that does not require grouping till much later in the game.

I would preorder LotRO and get in on the founders deal so you only have to pay $9.99 a month.  Thats a good deal.

personally i would suggest World of Warcraft, because it is the most user friendly has a large player base very polished and few bugs. I personally didn't like The Lord of The Rings Online. but that is just me. i wouldn't suggest EvE online either, because it has a very steep learning curve and it really appeals to only a select audience. what i would recommend is trying out WoW 10-day trial, and EvE 14-day trail, and try to get in to the LoTRO beta, so that way you can make your own decision.

WoW on the decline? In which world? Because not in this one.

For new MMORPG players, WoW, definitly.

I agree completely. I think LotRO is alot easier than WoW and a great starter.

It's alot better starting an mmo when it is fresh, and the community in LotRO is wonderful.

You can dive straight into the PvMP at level 10 and the fun just goes upwards from there.

    Currently Playing: Everything but MMORPGs
Cancelled: L2, FFXI, VSoH, LotRO, WAR, WoW
    Looking Forward To: SW:TOR

Definitely not EVE -- it is a great game, but is one of the least newbie-friendly games around.  WoW, on the other hand, is very user-friendly, but much less deep.  The two games are very, very different.

Any of World of Warcraft, Guild Wars or Lord of the Rings Online should be fine for beginners.

However you should be warned that the starting zones of many beginner level games tend to be dominated by loud-mouthed kids. Just grin and bare it - you will eventually find more worthwhile company.

Well, I play two mmos that their theme is about dance.... but I don't know if you like this type of games.

The one is at www.nexon.net and the other at http://dance.acclaim.com . They are both in OBT so you can try them

Yep - it's easy to play a bad hunter in easy mode. Any hunter can chain pull green mobs and let the pet do most of the work as the XP rolls in. But there's more to playing a hunter than that.

Just out of curiosity, which of the following hunter roles has your five year old mastered:

    - Safely pulling enemies in dangerous territory using tracking skills and feign death whilst minimising risk to fellow party members

    - Protecting weakly armoured fellow party members (such as healers) from mobs when the tank loses aggro

    - Chain trapping in order to crowd control elite opponents.

    - Successfully killing high level elite opponents by means of kiting

    - Killing experienced PvP melee opponents such as warriors and paladins 1 v 1 by means of kiting.

    - Executing a jump-shot (allows shooting backwards on the run if done right).

    - Defending a flag single handed in WSG against repeated capture attempts by enemy rogues (without time to fully recover from one fight before the next rogue turns up)

Playing a poor hunter is easy. There are an awful lot of them around.  However playing a good hunter is just as challenging, if not more so, than any other class.

I havnt had the best experiences with free MMO's, I know many people enjoy a variety of them, but I never really found one that was all that great.  Out of the ones that I tried Rappelz is not so bad though.  If I remember right its fairly colorfull I suppose.

If you do like lots of lighting effects EQII has about the best IMO (I have not yet seen LOTRO so I cannot comment on that).  If you download the Play The Fae trial you will see what I mean.   There are some pretty good spell effects as well.  Assuming your system can handle it, the lighting is rather taxing on any system in that game...it looks fantastic though.

City Of Heroes is probably one of the best MMO's for someone new to the genre. It's easy to pick up and play, has a much more mature and helpful community than some other MMO's and isn't as much of a time sink as others.

Guild Wars is another alternative as it doesn't have monthly subs

Beyond that, I would say WoW is ahead of LOTRO for new players as it's so much easier to find answers to anything you may want to know about. LOTRO is also a new MMO and will have server problems, population problems, etc when it goes live as well as the rather nasty 'nerf everything' patch that has gone in just before it goes live

EvE is probably not one for someone new to MMO's though.

Overall, CoH is definitely the one i'd go for as an intro to MMO's though.

    CoH/CoV - D-Zol/Kinslayer
    Auto Assault - Slayer
    WoW, LOTRO, DDO - Kinsul
    Matrix Online - Tempest

I'd say give Ryzom a try! It does have a pretty steep learning curve but at the end of the day you feel like you have accomplished something and have not been lead around by the hand. The community in game is very mature and helpfull too so don't be afraid to ask about anything, and there are almost always CSR's ingame to help too. But be forewarned this game is not quest driven, it is a sandbox game meaning that the player makes a lot  or all of content of the game.  There is a free unlimited time trial for the game that does have a level cap of 21.  You can get the trial version here www.Ryzom.com ! I hope this helped!

For new MMORPG players, WoW, definitly. How old is WoW? How many people are posting on these very forums that they are bored of Wow?  It happens in every game.  Do not be shocked.  People get bored and move on.  You don't need to get defensive about it.

I'd suggest LOTRO instead of WoW.

WoW can be an easier game, maybe, actually I haven't got any higher than 25 in LOTRO, so I can't really say, but aparently it doesn't seem to be much more complex than WoW. The thing is, that WoW is somewhat old already, full of 60's and now 70's, while LOTRO is just starting out. And it's always more fun to start in a new game (or new server), and to advace with all other players.

LOTRO doesn't have open pvp tho, it's restricted to a sort of a battleground, where some players play orcs, trolls and some other fiends while the other players play their own characters. WoW's open pvp can be fun while you don't turn yourself into a instance freak, but that's all up to you to decide, those two are your best bets, I'd guess.

And games with a monthly fee are always better, remember that, more content updates, usualy a better community and better customer support.

    Ultima Online 98~04
    Dark Age of Camelot 03~07
    Final Fantasy XI 04~06
    Guild Wars 05~08
    World of Warcraft 04~05

    MMO for Beginners?

CoH/CoV is what my children started on. My son moved on to WoW.

Personally, I think LOTRO is a better choice:

    1) Preorder and you will only pay $9.99/month

    2) You can complete deeds just by exploring.

    3) The Shire quests are so much fun.

    Disclaimer:

All of my friends have left WoW for LOTRO. I am a biased because I played WoW for 2 1/2 years and just got tired of it.

WoW right now is the better choice for a beginner, but I think LOTRO will quickly become the better choice.

Not the more popular choice, WoW will still continue to grow it's number of subs.

Out of all the games ive played i would say Guild Wars is the best starting game for a few reasons:

#1 If you find out you dont actually enjoy the game there is no sub fee, you only have to buyt he box. Its free to play.

#2 No griefing allowing you to move on with the quests at your speed.

#3 Here if you can find a good guild which is not o hard. You can do alot with them. i.e grouping and such.

#4 They have a good PvP system

#5 Lastly there is no "elite" characters in the game, its not a gear dependant game.

Blizzard GAINED 500k subscribers in just 2 months. Despite popular belief on anti - WoW forums such as this one, WoW is not declining. WoW is growing. in fact, WoW is growing faster then ever. If you count all the "I'm quiting!" posts on this forum, then you still won't even have 1000 posters.

I'm not defensive, I'm simply tired of people making things up and spreading silly rumors instead of looking at the facts.
