To the OP, could you list the type of single player games you commonly like? Do you prefer the slower methodical gameplay that comes with rpgs and turnbased strategy games or the faster more reactive gameplay of fps, fighting and adventure games? If you prefer slower gameplay then to a degree "World of Warcraft" and "LoTR Online" are acceptable. They can be played slowly since they sort of follow rpg mechanics but in reality they are far more reactive in general if you try to maximize your game play. If you prefer faster games period then look into "Gods and Heroes" or "The Chronicles of Spellborn". Gods and Heros is a squad based game and if you played games like Mechcommander or Star Wars Republic Commandos you'll know how engrossing managing multiple units can be. Spellborn itself is an fps game with a sword and sorcery bent.
Are you a graphics whore and if so what are you system specs? If you love graphics TCoS is the best followed by LOTRO, GnH and dead last WoW. But from my observations LOTRO is dead last when you consider other things that enhance graphics such as sound and animations. The atmospheric effects in WoW are pretty cool while I find LOTRO to be quaint but fitting with the backgroun material. The animations in Gods and Heros simply blows away all the other games but TCoS offsets that with better special effects and better sound (which you can sample). WoW is an older game so by default it has weaker graphics but the art direction is very nice. You said you like bright colors and WoW and Gods and Heros fits this requirement the best.
Well, my favourite games are rpgs, and most of all, the final fantasy tactics, and the FF series in general, plus chrono trigger and vagrant story (i know all from squaresoft but they are the best ). i really like the turn-based system, strategy is the key in this type of game. the graphic style is also the one i prefer, cartoon-like, cause i am quite an anime fan as well
my problem for playing games like WoW or LOTR is the computer i have for the moment: not powerful enough for LOTR and just over the minimal for WoW.
A friend told me about a game called dofus, i might give it a try, i will let you know if i like it
ive had a go at LOTRO and i didnt like it; it was pretty much WoW but with a LOTR theme: while WoW still being better (by far)
for begginers i would recomend a free MMO or one with a trial to see if you like the concept of the games, the once you have dicided; i think that WoW would be your best bet; but if you are into massive story lines and an almost never ending plain of a playing feild, FFXi i loved this game and partying is really fun, but you can also play it by yourself (to an extent, e.g. you cant really fight dragons by yourself at the quest lvl you are suposed to do it) but partying is (in my view) a must for MMO games, if you dont, why are you playing an MMO?
Obviously, as i am a FF fan, i'd like to give FFXI a try, but getting the game is already expensive, not including the subscription.
I think ill stick with Dofus for now. the game is free to play on the UK server, so it is perfect for me! I got addicted straight away to the chara designs and the colours, it is really different from all those dark universe MMORPGs ive been looking at.
Personally I think looking at an MMO as a "beginners game or advanced" is a mistake. You need to examine your playstyle and personal taste in games and find an MMO that matches that.
Do you like easy or complex mechanics, heavy grind/easy grind, fantasy/sci-fi, levels or skill systems, mechanics based gameplay communities or role playing comminuties and whatever else you can think of, hopefully you get my drift.
Basically pick a game that sounds appealing to you and research it (researching it does not mean asking on a general/generic forum like here, what they think of it, that is seeking an opinion) and understanding what the game is about, find out if it has a free trial then give it a go.
The idea of a starter MMO is silly, you either play them and immerse yourself in the game or you don't. There is no MMO designed to be a "starter MMO" they all have longevity if you enjoy it and that comes down to making an informed choice. If not, you are gonna end up hopping from one MMO to another based on a bunch of other peoples opinions wasting a lot of time and money.

What else do you like about the game ? From what I've seen, it's not really well-known, but the website says Dofus has over 2,750,000 players.
Any other players who would like to give their opinion about it ? Is it worth it ?

Imho Dofus is definitely worth testing, among the MMOs its turn based battle system is something unique and diffirent, and at least I had a blast for a few weeks. After that you'll start to realize that most of everything in the game is just a huge grind, but if it feels too much grinding for you then you can quit before it becomes boring.

OK, thanks for your input. I'll try it, I've just taken a look at a few other websites and am interested in the look & feel of the game.
