Its open beta and they can only fill 11 servers. So this is not going to be a popular game. Its gonna have 150k subscribers max
Well I think it's hard to project peak player numbers based on current participation in an open beta. There are all kinds of statistical reasons why this is not a reliable indicator, but to avoid boring everyone to death I'll just say that a lot of people actually don't like beta testing. If I try any new game, this will be it, but beta testing isn't my cup of tea.

Sniff you forget about the Europeans.
We have 6 servers when our prerorderperiod start 14th April.
So that's 17 servers just for those who has preordered it.
And i think you are in for a big surprise if you think the numbers stop at 150,000 in total subscribers. From what i have seen from these servers I would almost think they are running that many people per server. They are using some damn good net code and only opened up 4 new servers for the 700K US, Canadian, Aussie beta testers thqt came in Friday. I think a low ball guess will be 500K subscribers at the end of May, it may break a million but that would be a stretch imho.
So, if I were to go preorder the game from my local EB Games, I'd have to plunk down $49.99?
Last thing I preordered was the WoW expansion for a whopping $5 or $10, and I never even bothered to buy the game. Come to think of it, I think I switched my preorder over to WAR, but I'm not sure, really. I never got a call to come pick up my copy of TBC, so who knows.
Its open beta and they can only fill 11 servers. So this is not going to be a popular game. Its gonna have 150k subscribers max
Well, over 775,000 players in open beta are trying it out on US server alone right now, according to the world tour on lotro.com, with two weeks to go until release. After giving it a go myself, I'm pretty confident that the world wide player base will exceed your predicion of 150k subscribers max.

WoW Didn't have a real open beta. There was a weeklong "Contest" inwhich the top level people of each class/faction/server got into the closed beta. (Let me add that this went on during the middle of the schoolyear)
WoW Launched with 88 servers (http://www.warcraftrealms.com/realmstats.php?sort=online), and there was instant outcry for more. I believe I still have a screenshot of a 3000 person queue to get onto my original server, Blackrock.
Actually it depends on the store. Some are charging $10 some $5 but most online retailers are charging the full price.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
Everyone seems to forget the target is the casual customer, which is what WoW got. Not to say Turbine or anyone else is necessarily foolish enough to set a goal of drawing Blizzard's customers away but the bottom line is there are thousands, millions of casual players out there who have no idea about LOTRO yet, if they do they want to see it on shelves not a pre-order box, and they certainly don't want to download all night for an open beta. They want to insert the dvd, install, and play, not be some tester on some scary complicated experiment. The knowledgeable gamers like us who check all the forums, know in advance about upcoming MMOs, and jump on the beta offers are not the targets -- they already know and expect a decent portion of us will subscribe, even if only for a short time.
Turbine added some extra servers the day open beta opened, and they'll likely open more as they see fit once they get initial purchase data. I'm not expecting an 88 server WoW quantity, but they'll probably have more. If there's a huge influx of buyers suddenly that was unexpected, then we're going to have login issues the first few days, so I am expecting that.
Yeah, the target is the casual gamer, who prior to WoW's unexpected success, had no idea what these wacky MMO things were. There's still a sizable portion of the population that don't have a clue what these MMO things are, or are all about. They may have heard a friend, or someone at EB talking about "That WoW game" or whatever. And on their own, no, they wouldn't download it. But I bet a whole truckload of people have been in EB to pick up this or that, or just window shop, and had the salesperson club them over the head with a LotRO preorder FOR ONLY $5!!!!111
Because god knows, I can't ever go there, and buy something without 20 questions about whether I wanna buy insurance for the disc, or preorder this, that, or the other.
The big question, though, is of all those casual gamers, be they fans of the IP or no, how many will balk at paying a monthly fee? Yeah, it's only $14.99, or $9.99 for the founder thing. But that is a bit of a jump for someone who hasn't necessarily made the move to the online arena.
Then there's the lifetime sub. On one hand, I don't see many of them opting for the lifetime option, but then, on the other hand, I can see it. Hard to say, but I hope they release some numbers on how successful the lifetime thing is. Real numbers, not some PR fluff piece, either.
Went to best buy and slipped them $10 a couple days before pre-order beta opened. Inside the box were (2) beta keys. My 12 year old son and I have been playing since then. It seems the farther I get into this game the more enjoyable it seems. Up til 2:00 in the morning doing quests with him last night. LOL....bad daddy. Anywho....at this point there is no need to purchase the pre-order disc when you can download it for free and play until the 24th. Only thing you would gain from pre-order now is a couple in game items that you level out of, the ability to carry over your characters when the game hits the stores on the 24th (If you choose to purchase the retail game at full price) and the $9.99 a month fee or $199 lifetime membership costs. (Apparently it will be $14.99 a month for non-preorder customers...you do the math)
As far as the subscription numbers, best seller........all of that.....it is quite simply speculation. Lots of opinions running around this place and we all know what they say about opinions. If you get the inkling, download it and try it out. If not.....then don't. At this point your only investment will be time.

Originally posted by Salvatoris You Vanboys are so jealous.. it makes me giggle every time I see one of you try to draw parallels between the two games. You guys only have a few more weeks of "wait and see". I'm sure that LOTRO will eclipse Vanguards sales the first week. It isn't the greatest game ever made, or the end all be all of MMOs. But it doesn't have to be either of those things to be better than Vanghuard... which is only marginally better than dark and light. I understand that some people are capable of overlooking Vanguards piss poor performance, it's overabundance of bugs and it's barren empty world... so good for you guys. If you like Vanguard so much, why are you so threatened by people having something positive to say about another game coming out. I personally think you guys are just waiting for a bunch of unreasonable trolls to come in and start flaming the game... just like the big conspiracy of people have against Vanguard... proving your point that it's just a bunch of shills for WoW or Eve or whatever it is you think motivates the hate for that game. Since you don't see that happening you have to flame it yourself. Fortunately you don't have a lot to complain about. LOTRO is a polished and professional game. Something no one can say about vanguard with a straight face. I'll be sure to make the time to post all the reviews of LOTRO in the Vanguard forums once the game comes out. I guess that won't matter since you guys also insist that the game reviewers are in on the anti-vanguard crusade ass well. It couldn't possibly be as simple as a lot of people just not liking that game. If you guys don't get over it soon, you'll start getting left behind in your grind-fest. Those rats aren't going to kill themselves. I guess you guys have plenty of time while you wait for sigil to code some high level content... I'm sure they will get right on that as soon as the figgure out how to add helms to their game.

and in the top five at Amazon.com almost as long
