If you do you will be disappointed. Wow and now LOTRO show the direction of new mmorpg generation, easy to get into, casual gaming proof, low frustration by making it linear. Adding console compatibility to mmorpg illustrates the objective of this game, ie aimed at the mass, no niche game, they are trying to develop a fat cash cow. Diablo hacknslash-type true and true with some gimmicks here and there. This is not a critic, people will like it as they like LOTRO, just posting this as I can already see people being disappointed.

"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
Thanks.
I can answer this with certainty.
Both.

No, it is for the masses. The average age (arithemetic mean) of mmorpgers is 26.6. The share of of gamers who are 16 or below is relatively small.

So the masses is now considered a small sub division of gamers that average 26.6 or did you mean the target audience which is gamers 17+ which is what it is rated for?
Wait, how did the average age of 26.6 = Masses?

Other source (Jupiter Research):
• 55% of gamers are between 25 and 44 years old.
• 70% of all video games are purchased by people over 40 years old.
• Gaming is a preferred activity over TV, movies, the internet and sadly, books.
• 87% of console game purchasers are over 18 years old
• 97% of PC games purchases are over 18 years old.
• The average age of the MMORPG player is 26
• 25% of MMORPG players are teenagers
• 50% of MMORPG players have full time jobs
Arithmetic means are sensitive to oultiners, yes, and a median would be better, but I dont have any statistics illustrating the median, do you? Then please share.
Now, because their rating is 17+ that means that they have built a game to try and woo in gamers who are 17+ so the fact of the rating and your statistics means that the niche they are shooting for ( Gamers who are of age 17+) is going to encompass a good few gamers. This means that they are in fact not going for the masses ( All of humanity) but instead a niche (17+ years of age gamers) .
No, a mass does not encompass all of the human population, just a large number
"A large number of human beings, collected closely together or viewed as forming an aggregate in which their individuality is lost. "
(Source: Oxford dictionary)
It's perception... You could lose your individuality at 1 other person, I could lose mine at 5000... Whats the magic number? This threads gone off track partly due to me for too long... I'll leave you with this...
If you were a game developer making a game that could spell disaster for your company... Would you not shoot for masses? While throwing in some non linear gameplay, sandboxing if you will? Complexity is once again perception....
The argument at what point a mass becomes a number is pointless, I'm not exactly sure how you can argue against a point that says "Rated for Ages 17+" with a Mature rating could not be hitting its niche market... Players 17+.... Frankly, I barely remember what we are arguing about?

Hehe, was nice discussing with you while it lasted Rarely are discussions this constructive
Anyway I just wanted to state that I do not think that placing a +17 badge on a game does not make it a niche game

Let me rephrase it.
If you want to make game for masses number one rule DO NOT RESTRICT AGE, couse even if only 10% (but its a lot more) of WoW players is under 17/18 thats almost 1.000.000 player loss its not wise. The second rule would be make it simple and same as all other popular MMO's do not implement something new like real combat system couse it can bite you in the ass.
The latest release game for masses is Lord of the rings online, nice graphics and very simple to play, even 7 year old can master it easily. ( Dont get me wrong, i dont have anything against lotro and market need that kind of games, especially to get new MMO players that will eventually want to play something more complex )

The KIDS will be all over AOC,all this crap about M rating is bullshit and you all know it.How many mothers/fathers have gone out knowing GTA is M(might even be adult now) BUT still bought the game for there kids. How many kids get there older brother or sister to buy it.
All this shit about lotr-wow being easy mode is true but dont think AOC wont be EASY to play after a few hours practice. Sorry guys but you need to come to terms that AOC will be flooded with ages ranging from single figure to double.
There is nothing you can do to stop this and if the truth be known i bet the devs don't give a toss either. The M rating is there to warn people of the content not to hinder the profits.I am waiting for WAR but i am fully aware of kids wanting to play, its just the way it is now and will only get worse.

WAR IS COMING
Ghost Squad..
"Find your own world within Hyboria gather friends and enjoy because there is always ignore" did you read that sentence in my post FFS.
As for WAR being a WOW clone, well i am not even going to answer that.
WAR IS COMING
Ghost Squad....
The game can play on a rail for all I care as long as it is FUN to play (no button mashing for the love of God!!) and the pvp/sieges are intense and enjoyable. Sandbox style games (VG and others) just don't motivate me to go cut someone's head off. Team warfare (PS, WoW BG's, DAOC) are much more my speed!
