making the first 20 levels single player is stepping out of the mold which we knows as these mmo games and letting you get into the story of the game without having to worry who has better armor or higher level. this game should be very different and if you are going to make something different there is a higher chance to fail so i dont think they made this game to be a fast cash cow just made it to make a great different game then what we are used to and bring new ideas to these boring mmorpgs that have been coming out
This just makes me laugh/cry because people thinking that AOC will have nothing but mature adults are talking out of their ass.M rating mean above the age of 17,if you ask me there is not a lot of difference between 14-17 maturity wise these days.
The KIDS will be all over AOC,all this crap about M rating is bullshit and you all know it.How many mothers/fathers have gone out knowing GTA is M(might even be adult now) BUT still bought the game for there kids. How many kids get there older brother or sister to buy it.
All this shit about lotr-wow being easy mode is true but dont think AOC wont be EASY to play after a few hours practice. Sorry guys but you need to come to terms that AOC will be flooded with ages ranging from single figure to double.
There is nothing you can do to stop this and if the truth be known i bet the devs don't give a toss either. The M rating is there to warn people of the content not to hinder the profits.I am waiting for WAR but i am fully aware of kids wanting to play, its just the way it is now and will only get worse.

I totally agree!!!!! I know i am 13, but i have seen tons and TONS of kids in my class get their parents to buy games for them because it is above their rating. And this is first hand information. I think there shoulden't be ratings on games, just a brief description of the games so that the parents can decide whether they shjould buy it for their child or not, because ratings don't prevent ANYONE from buying a game.
Originally posted by Fion Considering Funcom's previous games. It probably couldn't get any less linear and dumbed down.ALL the games Funcom has made have been non-linear and exceedingly complex. So much so that a lot of people don't play them, because they simply are to complex.Unless you have some kind of inside information (which I doubt,) your just blowing crap out of your arse because you believe that if it's on a console, it'll be linear and simplified.Let us form a bet. I bet it'll be complex, non-linear and quite deep. You bet the opposite I suppose? Let us see who is correct.
Pretty much says it all.
p.s. Who said there wont be any kids ingame, all I said if you want to make MMO for masses don't rate it M ... I hope WAR turn out good, I like the concept and if AOC turns out bad (not likely, i hope) the WAR is my second choice. Its nice to have some alternative.
If you want to make game for masses number one rule DO NOT RESTRICT AGE, couse even if only 10% (but its a lot more) of WoW players is under 17/18 thats almost 1.000.000 player loss its not wise.
Age restrictions would actually play a part in my interest of a game. At 29, I don't enjoy the maturity level of a lot of the games out there. Just my .02 credits.
Didn't read the whole thread, but has anyone mentioned Final Fantasy XI?
It was pretty much made for console, but you could never accuse it of being linear or dumbed-down -- certainly not when compared to other MMOGs, at any rate.
So there goes the console argument out the window.
Originally posted by towani Age restrictions would actually play a part in my interest of a game. At 29, I don't enjoy the maturity level of a lot of the games out there. Just my .02 credits.
I know what you mean, 31 years here.
They learned a lesson from DAOC.....people want to fight each other. So you will be able to get at it early and often. Look how long it took Mythic to figure that out and make Battle Grounds.
"In addition to the character class choices, the player will be able to select feats, skills, special attacks and combos. Every two levels, you get one feat point, and every five levels of the 80 max, you get a whole bunch of points to select feats that feats unlock the ability to do attacks, equip gear and what-not. Every level, you get 10 skill points to distribute on skills, and every 10 percent of a level, you get another point. The skills increase the chance of climbing, opening doors, speed of regaining health, etc."
What does this mean? It means that every single level your character will have to make significant choices that not only have an immediate affect, but will significantly affect him and his later choices down the road. WOW and LOTRO in contrast autoassign almost every single possible statistic, leaving a few mostly meaningless choices up to you. And when it comes to skills? The only real choice is which one to train if you can't pay for both this time.
If you will take a look at Anarchy Online's system, it is easily the most complex, nonlinear, and indepth of its kind, and Funcom is doing it again with AoC.

Thats only partly true. Because of the M rating, the game won't be sold in some stores, especially one where the vast majority of games are sold, Walmart. Yes believe it or not Walmart accounts for some 60% or more of game sales. Crazy ah? Also some countries will outright ban the game because of the Mature rating. I think Germany is one of them, not sure.
So profits can indeed and very likely WILL be hindered, at least until (and if) the game becomes successful enough that sales can be generated by word of mouth. The devs have told us over and over and over that the Mature rating isn't just some kind of marketing ploy.
Though I'm sure some children will be in the game, I don't think it'll be as bad a situation as you suggest. The evidence is there, particularly on the main forums. They are far more 'adult' in attitude and quality then say WoW's, or even WARS.
But then again I think your a kid yourself, and mostly just spewing crap because your a WAR fan and theres some kind of kiddy battle going on between the two games in some folks minds. This post is NOT a WARvAOC post, its a post about the M rating and how it really does not mean jack.I am WAR fan but i happen to be an AOC fan as well and if one does not work out then i will look at the other.Because i have an opinion that you don't agree with it makes me a kid lol, you sound like the kid.
Look i will say it again AOC will have KIDS playing and so will WAR thats just the way it is.I live in UK so i have no store called walmart but our laws are different than yours or Germany's in that it will be on sale everywhere with no restriction other than the M rating.
AOC will be like any other MMORPG when it come to learning curve lol.Give a 9 year old a couple of days to figure it out and they will be off.I have not see anything mentioned by the dev saying "THIS GAME WILL BE TO HARD TO MASTER FOR ANYONE UNDER 10 YEARS OLD" have you?.
I been following AOC since 05 march and have been a member of the forums since then so don't think i am some raving WAR fan out to get AOC lol get a fucking grip and realise that Funcom will make a game that WILL attract Plenty of KIDS just like WAR will.
This just makes me laugh/cry because people thinking that AOC will have nothing but mature adults are talking out of their ass.M rating mean above the age of 17,if you ask me there is not a lot of difference between 14-17 maturity wise these days.

Lol, this post speaks the painful truth I always laugh at all these AoC fans that think this game will be populated with all adults. Why? Because I have an xbox 360 with M rated games like Rainbow Six: vegas and many other and its rampant with a bunch of little small frys getting on the game acting all immature it makes me wanna toss my headset sometimes I hate VOIP (voice over IP)
This just makes me laugh/cry because people thinking that AOC will have nothing but mature adults are talking out of their ass.M rating mean above the age of 17,if you ask me there is not a lot of difference between 14-17 maturity wise these days.

Lol, they can always cut some content so it can be sold in Germany. C&C 3 turned the suicidal terrorists into a slightly different version so they could pass in germany and I think Unreal Tournament has no gore in german version
Yeah right why is it I can purchase Rainbow 6: Vegas at Walmart then lol
So yeah, no one that has any experience will console games will believe for one second thats a barrier to preventing kids from getting on. Small frys get on Rainbow 6: Vegas all the time and it always pisses me off to hear those little rugrats cursing and trying to act grown. Its part of the reason why my brother-in-law also hates playing xbox live games cause he also cant stand all these little kids getting on the voice chat talking about their homework and asking ev1 did they get the gamne for christmas just like them (true story)
If you do you will be disappointed. Wow and now LOTRO show the direction of new mmorpg generation, easy to get into, casual gaming proof, low frustration by making it linear. Adding console compatibility to mmorpg illustrates the objective of this game, ie aimed at the mass, no niche game, they are trying to develop a fat cash cow. Diablo hacknslash-type true and true with some gimmicks here and there. This is not a critic, people will like it as they like LOTRO, just posting this as I can already see people being disappointed.
This post has some truth but the reason I think Age Of Conan will be linear because its a Class based, Level game which are always a single, linear path to end game raiding. The only way we will see a depature from this is going all skill based and making it so everyone can acquire skills that they need / want. This way I can always play with friends there is no 'divide' between casual gamers and hardcore, a 'divide' between newbies and veterans. Until we see this barrier come down only then will we see a true open ended game that encourages a lot of complexity and choices.
However I think AoC will still be fun but I can see your point why you would think the controls will be fairly simple but I will reserve my final judgement til open beta
The M rating does indeed serve a purpose. For one, it allows Funcom to put any amount of violence/graphic content in the game without having to worry about parents suing because poor little snot-nosed Timmy got his freakin' sensibilities offended right before he tripped and fell in that stupid well.
Secondly, it allows the fun of rooting out and banning the kids that are too dumb to hide their age ingame, without refunds, apologies, or explanations.
The game can play on a rail for all I care as long as it is FUN to play (no button mashing for the love of God!!) and the pvp/sieges are intense and enjoyable. Sandbox style games (VG and others) just don't motivate me to go cut someone's head off. Team warfare (PS, WoW BG's, DAOC) are much more my speed!
I'm a new convert to Conan. I was warry of it and Warhammer and was an avid sandbox fan. That is untill I realized that most people have no clue how to fill up a sandbox. Oddly enough, Conan offers alot that VG was promising and didn't fufill (Mounted combat, engaging lore, cooler quests, meaningful PVP etc). I've never been much of a PVPer but it seems that AoC and War are thinking outside the box and doing original things while LoTR and VG and others are still following closely in the footsteps of WOW and EQ. I've never been a big ganker but I can certainly get into launching a seige engine at some unsuspecting archer.
Could the people who claim that "Mature games are a niche" please inform a little company called Take 2 about this? You see they have sold more then 20 million copies of mature games, and are in terms of units sold the most succesful game developer of the last years with their bestselling GTA and Manhunt series. Surely they would like to be informed that they are just catering for a niche, despite outselling every competitor on the field of gaming. Upon hearing this they might decide to go "mainstream", rename the title "happy borrow auto" and make it for all ages. Surely Take 2 have missed a huge opportunity making their games M-rated.

When did Vanguard EVER promise meaningful PvP? PvP was always an afterthought, and simply tacked on near the end of the development process.

At one point I seemed to remember them talking about PVP battles with player made ships where you could actually be a real pirate. It was probably scrapped along the same time that the three spheres divided. Originally I believe there was talk that crafters would have caravans and carry goods from one place to next, melee types would be hired to protect them, diplomats would go along to get better prices. I recall EQ2 and Vanguard both talking about controlled PvP at times and then scrapping it as the game developed further and they ran out of time.
A relatively linear game can still be fun if it has good pvp and guild systems - I'd point to guildwars. Besides, a niche game does not necessarily equal good game. As with any unreleased game, we will just have to wait and see.
Buying your 4 year old GTA is one thing. But paying a monthly fee around $15 is quite another.
Lol,come on man, you no thats bullshit.I live in the UK and your BIG $15 is worth £7 lol.Kids get £17-30 paper money each week plus pocket money from parent's.You really need to catch up if you think $15-£7 is big money lol, fucking funny or what.
Who said anything about 4 year olds?dont try and add a little twist to it because you have no real comment to the discussion going on here.We are talking from 8-9 years old playing the game. Now i dont know what 8-9 year olds are like in the US but here they probably stopped playing with action-man dolls ages ago or barbies for that matter.
will they host their own forums, or pawn it off on fansites?
if the answer to the first is "yes", and/OR the answer to the second is "pawn off on fansites", then you can bet this game will suck incredibly
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
It doesn't seem like this game really excels at anything new or different. I have read the reviews for it and it just seems like an mmo with violence added. I don't know if that really makes it any different.
