For you shop lifting types...

EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

Well I just got something from Target six months ago ....it's not a product a bought from Target; rather, it is something FOR Target (the retail store).

We just got a multi million dollar security upgrade.  Over the last six months I have to say I am impressed. We have security cameras that record 24 hours a day digitally into a multi server platform.  Our store is 99% visible to all our cameras (the one percent is the bathrooms but we have a camera in front of those).

These cameras captures everything.  Let say you shoplifted something.  Got away with it?  Not in my store anymore.  If we find an empty box (almost every shoplifter takes the product from the box) all I have to do is digitally back up the cameras until I find the person (even if its hours after he left).  Then all I have to do is create a master record copy and copy every camera, from the time he walked into the store to the time he left the parking lot, on one nice little flash drive.  We will then get the license plate of the shoplifter (its impossible to leave our parking lot without getting the license plate unless they remove it before hand...which has never happened yet).  After the master record copy is done we then send it to the local police department in which they will get the license plate number and then confirm the video to the person who owns the car. Get a warrant and then arrest them.

No longer do we have to catch a person shoplifting because our constant cameras do that for us. We can maintain a 100% visual on you, unless you use the bathroom, at all times without us knowing you are shoplifting.

In the last six months we have arrested six cashiers, four sales floor people, sixteen adults, twenty three adoloscents (stealing games, CDs, and Key Gens from WoW), and twelve soccer moms (half of them even had the stereotype MiniVan with the soccerballs pasted onto the back).  Just last night we arrested two more adoloscents.

This is just one store

In the past six months we recovered over 12,000 US dollars in merchandise and broked a counterfeit ring as well as an Illegal Cell Phone distrubitor.

Do you guys monitor it all the time closely? Or just post theft?

I still think i could type keys in my phone and put the case back in the box, and you guys would be none the wiser. Actually, ironically enough, Target is the store I most often steal keys from. Only idiots steal physical property from places nowadays.

I only steal intellectual property these days. Now, who wants to hear about the adventures of my young, American boy wizard, Harold Earthenware?

How the hell can you catch me. You don't even know where to start looking. I may be in a nazi training camp for all you know.

Cool. Maybe this will result in lower rates of shoplifting. Maybe that will result in stores lowering their prices, as they claim they need to increase prices about 13% the last I read to compensate for shoplifting. I doubt it though.

Well...if you drove away, and if the target has the same system as the one Enigma just described...yeah....

True enough, but one would think that the cost of this system would go down after the initial cost.

A guy who does street interviews on a show here in Oz walked up to some kids out front of a department store and said "So kids how many shoplifting days left till Xmas?"... They were basically speechless.

I thought it was pretty amusing anyway.

Sure they'll cut the 13% off

trhen add another 25% to pay for the over-the-top security

12k in 6months from a MULTI million dollar security system

as i said thats about 208 years for the drop in shrinkage to actually pay that offactually, we are saving money this way.  Our first month alone paid off the security enhancements we received. We recovered over 80% of our merchandise.

All that takes is someone cruising the parking lots. It won't be hard at all to notice a missing license plate, in which case you WILL be caught in the act when you walk out.

It's easy for me to detect a shoplifter in the act by the way they move. I really hate shoplifters in grocery stores. I don't know why stores let people eat and drink unbrought products and think they are going to buy it till you find the wrapper or bottle in the back of some shelf. Honestly someone ate a mozerella ball about 2/3 the size of a baseball and threw the wapper on the floor. I find women stealing more though.

So you're tellin me that all I'd have to do is wear a wig, paste a beard on, dress in unusual clothes, walk to the store with no car or bike, pull off the theft discretely and walk out? I say it's time to hire some security guards too.

It is quite amazing how many people steal. I'm surprised at Enigma's report. I stole once when I was six or seven I think. Ripped a necklace out of a book in a book store. It looked so pretty...

Camera's are basically the same thing as shop detectives. How the hell are they supposed to know when you're stealing when they don't know what to look for? Best defence against shoplifting is hiring a shoplifter.

I'm willing to bet that even with all your camera's I an steal and get out in 60 seconds, without you knowing it was me.

You've caught ~60 people in 6 months. That's impressive, but you make it sound like you have that shit on lockdown. I'd be willing to guess that for every 1 you caught, 5 got away. What if I were to park at a store next door to Target? Or like Draenor said, ride a bike? Or what if I just took the security chip out of the DVDs I stole rather than ditching the case?

Or I could always go back to the easiest method of stealing keys and just buy it, write it down, and return it.
