Maybe they were scared that too many people would complain about the whole hobbits can't swim thing. So if you were to send them underwater, some fans of the literature just couldn't take it. That would be cool if they did the EQ1 thing, where you had a swimming skill. Then just start all the Half-lings at 1, and everyone else at at least 50 or something. I for one would like swimming underwater.
Sadly this is typical for Turbine. You couldn't swim underwater in Asherons Call or AC2. Not sure about DDO but I doubt it. Seems like a theme with them. It used to drive me crazy in AC2 to be able to see to the bottom of these deep pools of water with absolutely nothing in them. I wish we had it to but I would agree it isn't a game breaker for LOTRO
I didn't see that anyone gave you a full answer; as mentioned above, yes jumping is in, it works well. You wade through shallow water, and when it gets too deep you start swimming automatically. Very cleanly done. How do characters interact with the world? Fairly complex issue. You can shoot through bushes, but trees and other major objects block line of sight. Same with running; through bushes, most spiderwebs, etc. but not through major objects. Right click to open doors (which also work very smoothly). You can jump up onto statues in a town square often, slide down hills onto hobbit roofs, and are injured by falling. Usually a sprain that slows you for a bit, but you can be killed in extreme cases.
I didn't much like underwater swimming in WoW, and hated it in VG, so I don't miss it at all.
Thank you for your reply. You even brought brought up things that I forgot to ask about.
So, you slow down if injured in a certain way? That's awesome!

It really is pretty cool when you get injured. One of the first things I liked in the Alpha. The "hobble" draggin' one leg behind you is rather nice. For the most part you get slowed, the more serious the injury the longer you are slowed.
I think the hobbits not swimming might have had a good deal to do with the no underwater swimming issue. The "lore whores" are pretty noisy when they think something doesnt fit the lore. But again I heard on several subjects "too much coding" as an excuse for something not being there...sitting in chairs, still having hair when wearing a hat and such.
Underwater swimming!!! Why why why?!?! Why do developers leave this feature out of most games? The only ones I can think of that have is are EQ1 and 2, WoW, Vanguard, and I think DAoC introduced it with an expansion. There is SO much fun to be had underwater. I know it's not "in line with the books", blah blah blah. But I'm sure alot of other stuff has been overlooked for the sake of being fun as well. It's another whole realm of possibility and adventure to explore, but most developers seem to ignore it completely.
What really weird is they have 3d movement (jumping/climbing & underwater swimming) in DDO so we know their engine supports it.

You can swim but as far i know there is nothing underwater so don't know why you want to swim under water, yes they took a different approuch towards swimming, but you have to agree its nicely done besides everything takes place on land again as far i know
I did enjoy underwater quest within WoW and hoped it would make it in LotrO but thinking about LotrO makes me wonder why shold we be able to dive underwater wouldn't make much sense. But then again i'm not a Tolkien follower so have no idea in how far swimming was introduced in Lore or if it was something that was even spoken of thru story's in Lotro. I do miss underwater swimming or the splash anitmation in Vanguard which i do feel should have underwater swimming. It does but it just don't look that good, looks more like floating in the air the ngetting a feel of swimming in Vanguard. I'm still enjoying Vanguard
LotrO is a fun game many will enjoy it regardless if they can swim underwater or not, afcourse it would be a nice feature if it was added but then again we can't have it all all the time. Turbine has done a great job with LotrO even though i don't play it anymore after beta and not planning to for now atleast i still see it as a very nice game. But thats just me i don't have to bash a game just because i don't play it (...hint...hint)
Not only does it slow you down when you fall but it also makes you unable to block evade or parry for the time you are injured (which does scale with the height fallen from). You also cannot block or parry when you are running away from an attacking mob, though you might have a chance to evade still. So if you happen to be really low on morale, make sure you face your enemy as you retreat.
Underwater swimming is a minor annoyance for something that would be used so little. I would love it if a mob were able to drag you underwater from the shore, other than that, can't really see a need for it. I personally don't even like the fact that every hobbit can swim, we had to make it even for everyone...blah blah ok i'm not even reading this drivel now.
I believe the new area that's due to be released in the next update (north of the Shire I think), is like 75% water. There's a huge lake in the center of it.
I would really hate to think all that space is just going to be wasted. Perhaps they have something up their sleeves?
