As we can see by the thread, voice is an issue. So far, the only things the games have done is ignore the issue, and leave it to the players to handle it.
As we can see by this thread though, it isn't working. People who want to play with those who use voice chat don't want to have to compromise their choices because some refuse to use it. I can understand that. People who don't think it's appropriate don't want to be pressured into adopting an intrusive technology just to enjoy what they buy and pay for. I can understand that too.
What both groups need to understand though is that we can't force others to accomodate our preferences, and if those preferences prevent us from grouping or being a part of each other's game, it means we can't game with each other on the same servers.
That's cool. In fact, that's how we can solve this problem. Set aside some servers as "vent" servers, others as "TS" servers, and others as "text only." That way, players have choices to game with those who share their preferences, and can be assured that nobody will be left out because of something trivial like whether they want to stick a headset in their ear, or not.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?
im sry but voip isnt a "issue". Its a preference, from my understanding the majority in this post who dont like voip like to role play. Thats fine, go ahead and RP if you so wish. If im a guild leader and i say must use vent during a raid, then do it, and if you dont, then il find people that will. If you dont want to then make a guild and dont use it. If your issue is servers just for RP then thats the developers problem.
Actually both groups can force other people to accomodate if its there guild, either join and hop on or leave and find your preference. There is no need to set aside servers, its more or less the guilds you join. Now setting aside RP servers thats fine, but none of this TS or VENT server and these non vent using, its a 3rd party program you can use w/e the hell you want.
Small point against an earlier post above then im jumping back out of this extremely silly thread -
Its not about talking faster than typing. You can be the fastest typer ever and it still doesn't matter.
Its about being able to both talk and keep playing your character at the same time. You stop to type, you are dead in the water, even if only for a few seconds. You can't keep fighting or moving while typing. But if you talk, you can still keep fighting.
Groups that talk have substantially higher survival ratings than those that don't. And even better are the ones that can both talk and fight simultaneously.
You play a FPS like battlefield, the teams that communicate over VOIP well steamroll over the ones that don't. Even in mmorpgs that still applies.
I don't give a rats ass about privacy. Anonymity is why the internet is a festering cesspool of filth. Anything that puts a dent in that is good in my book.
Alright im outa here.
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence. Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

Awfully long and passionate 12 page thread for a "non-issue."
It's an issue around preferences, and how our preferences are affecting one's enjoyment in the game. There is nothing novel about your solution, because it's what we have now. It isn't working though, because if it were, we wouldn't be in this long-azz thread.
Now if you are a guild leader who demands that people log on to your voice software of choice, then wouldn't you want to play on a server where everyone could be a possible candidate for recruitment, and not have to wonder if the player you meet will be a hassle? I mean, having separate servers for voice preference isn't just for those who want text only. It's for the players who use voice, and don't want to have to deal with preference/hardware/software issues in PUGs or guild recruitment.
The bottom line is, if there are people or guilds who demand that people communicate in a particular way, then I would think their interests would best be served by letting them play on a server where everyone communicates the same way. What it gives you are more potential recruits, easier communication, less hard feelings, and a real community that is willing and able to talk in the customary manner.
I mean seriously, if there is no way I am able to game with you unless I adopt your communications method, there's no point in playing with you, or you with me. So then, why can't we just choose servers where people play the same way we do, so we won't get in each other's way?

Lol are you serious? VOIP is a big part of MMO's, to me it's what makes them what they are. I am sorry but yea, I feel if you can't join vent you are being anti-social.
Let me clarify, if you join a guild, and you know they'll be raiding and using vent, and you don't join, you are at fault. If you want to join a raiding guild that doesn't use it, more power to you. The way you are talking is, a guild with 40 people using vent should cater to you because you don't want to use it! of course people will think you are rude and antisocial.
If you don't like it, find people who don't like it as well, don't expect others to cater to you because you want to ignore them.

Wouldn't it be great if you could join a server where everyone was willing and able to use vent? That way, everyone could be sociable to you.
Likewise, wouldn't it be great if everyone who refused to use vent were on other servers? That way, they wouldn't get in your way.

I like the text-only server idea mentioned in another post. I can also see that PvP (yes I'm a DAoC - ranked on my server for a while - and EVE vet) and raids (I started tht in EQ1 when they started) are easier to run and much easier to be competitive in if your team/group/raid/corp whatever uses voice chat.
Voice chat is cool. Not going to argue that. I'm fine with being told that its ok, just have it on .. you don't have to talk. Except, I won't be able to hear them well enough for it to be worth me going on voice chat. See, I'm social *AND* I don't like Voice chat. I know the difference too.
I'm going deaf. Age-related they tell me. Nothing scary, should happen to the rest of you too - if you live long enough. So there. I always thought I'd be gaming as an old fart, I've *been* gaming since games were put on mainframes. Never thought hearing loss would affect my gaming. Hearing aids work sucky with my headset, and I need to not be in a headset so the family can get my attention anyway.
People want a fast-paced PvP or highly competitive raid game with voice chat .. great. I know I'm out. The thing that kills me is that now I join a casual guild and everyone is in Vent, talking and getting to know each other. Doesn't matter what game. I can connect to Vent/TS and ask them to up their codec quality and set my mixer to mimic the tone boost my hearing aids give me, but I still can't hear people well enough to make it worth staying on the server much. So .. I end up hanging out in guild text chat .. me .. and .. the crickets.
I could so go for a text-preferred server designation and a non PvP/Raid endgame right now. Anything coming out like that?
i have to agree with the whole not doing VOIP is being anti social, do you consider writing letters to people social , or talking on aim social, if you meet someone new you prob talk to them on aim, its like the lowest form of being social.
These are MMO's your suppose to be social, kinda the whole point of the MMO factor, otherwise it might as well me a RPG with a multiplayer function.
As for the NO VENT / NO TS server. Unless you have some large population agreeing with you i still say no, you have to find your nitch. With vent and TS i dont want a vent only/TS server cause ya know how many jack ass's i dont want t otalk to, i can be unsociable to people i dislike and sociable to those i do wish to talk to.
See how easy this whole mess can be resolved, with just a bit of forethought?
I mean, you aren't ever going to make people who don't like it to like it, and it's not fair to you to force you to abandon it. So it seems to me that the best solution is to give people choices to go to the server that supports their communications choice.

The great thing about Vent and TS, is the moderator can moderate the channels. We have that power in text chat too.
What earmarked servers do for someone like you is give you the power to talk to those you want to talk to, if you choose, and not have to be confronted by software/hardware/preference issues. It opens communications options to you, and doesn't close them.
I mean, what possible reason could you have for preferring this communications hodge-podge we have now on the servers? All it's doing is creating a lot of grouping and guilding issues that groups and guilds shouldn't have to deal with. Just think about how easy it would be if you didn't have to argue on a 40 man raid with two guilds whether you use Guild A's TS service, or Guild B's Vent service? Think about how many new friends you'll meet, because there won't be a communications issue. Think about the time you'll save, because you won't be kicking out ten folks out of your group because they aren't hooked up.

I appreciate that its easier to communicate with people using voice chat. I apprecaite the benefits it presents to player run organizations and for the social aspect. With all that in mind I personally hate it. The rise of VOIP communications as a gaming component has the potential to ruin MMORPG games for me. My PC is in a common area of the house. I'm a father of a 10 year old and a 7 week old and my wife and I share a room with a TV and said computer. There are lots of times where its practical for me to do a quest or run an Eve mission but in those same times it may not necessairly be as practical to have a headset on.
I know im a dieing breed of gamer and that everyone likes chatting but is there anyone else that shares my sentiment? On top of all of these issues sometimes the last thing I want to do at teh end of the day is talk more.
Am I alone? It seems to me that the future of player run orgs in MMO gaming is directly tied with VOIP chat. Although I fully appreciate the benefits this presents in accomplishing tasks as a group I ask myself is there any other way?
Pretty soon your kids are going to be old enough to read your chat. And then you are going to be one of those people who say to the guild "please can you not swear or talk about adult issues over guild chat".
I've had the same sort of trouble with Audio comms. People swearing and then my neice repeating all the words she hears.
I find the best solution is to turn off the comms until she goes to bed. In fact I don't enjoy playing games when there are children in the room full stop. I keep some other games more suitable for them to join in with installed. Otherwise headphones would work as well.
I like voice comms if the people on the system are fun. It makes gaming more co-ordinated, and if they are friends of mine, it's a nice way to stay in touch.
I don't really bother with great big open channels. It usually just ends up in some god aweful boring conversation about what's better a +3 Axe Of Conversation or page 23 of the Dungeon Masters Guide.
I host my own private servers so I have a system where my friends and I are the only people with access to it if I need it.
I do not want everyone in the game to have audio communications with me. I do not want my home invaded by the conversations of random people. (In fact there a a good few people on every server who I don't even want to have typed communications with me either).
I am trying to relax. Enjoying my quiet time. If I want to have a big party I will go down the pub. Just because you want to talk to me, doesn't mean I want to listen to you.

Anyway. To each their own. What's funy about this thread tho is that believers in VOIP say that those who don't want to use it shouldn't be forcing their playstyle on them (which I agree with). But on the other hand they're doing exactly that. Forcing voip down our throat and calling those who refuse "anti-social" I know this is the internet, and that somehow a lot of people think that posting your opinion on the internet means it's the law, but please. To each their own and all that.
I do agree, however, that if you join a guild which uses VOIP you shouldn't whine and either use it too, or join another one.
The same thing, however, goes the other way around. Don't whine for VOIP in a non-voip guild
Lol are you serious? VOIP is a big part of MMO's, to me it's what makes them what they are. I am sorry but yea, I feel if you can't join vent you are being anti-social.
hmm...anti-social.... or hard of hearing, or English is your second language, or sharing the room you're playing in, or you prefer immersive play, or have an embarrassing voice....
Actually, the most telling thing for me, is that the last two posters who seem to have trouble understanding why some people don't want to use VOIP, both referred to the games as MMOs. As I said earlier in the thread, different people seem to want different things from these games and can have difficulty understanding the others' viewpoint. Personally, I tend to play MMORPGs.
The thing is, PVP in mmo's in my opinion is only good BECAUSE of the inherent RP and immersion in MMo's. The combat sucks ass, if you want good team based combat play Battlefield 1942 or something if the combat is all youre looking for.
The competitive level of PVP in MMO's has been raised beyond that originally intended imo by voice-chat.
I agree. "Killing that evil dark elf with my law loving paladin" has turned into "pwning noobs." It seems to me to be an attitude for another genre of game. I remember when the conversation about role playing games jerked to a halt when someone asked "who won." To tell people that "winning" isn't really the point didn't seem to get through.
I think you inadvertantly hit on the culprit, too. Once you make something "team-based," there are gonna be good teams and bad teams (And then their is going to be the Detroit Lions). I think when EQ required us to maximize the healer, tank, DD, CC model, it was only so long before the "competition" began.
That is funny...I played Asheron's Call for 2 years without ever needing voice chat...and guess what? Me and my groups always did great without it...I wonder why that is...can't be because...voice chat really isn't needed?
And anyways, even if it was...I won't use it...and I will never use it. I don't care if every guild in the game uses it...I would just quit and find a new mmorpg to play.
Actually EQ never intended to force you into the holy trinity IMO. People did it because it was the most efficient want to play and it caught on. A similar thing happened with raiding. Raiding was never intended, but people combined groups to take down mobs they weren't supposed to take down and the devs then developed a group type of interface for raiding to compliment that. Most of what you see in MMOs today is because the players pushed the games to their limits.
Lol are you serious? VOIP is a big part of MMO's, to me it's what makes them what they are. I am sorry but yea, I feel if you can't join vent you are being anti-social.

The thing is the keyboard needs to be used for combat at all time to perform well. You can't type and fight well at the same time, unless you can type with one hand and do all the combat with the mouse. If you can't hear or don't want to disturb other people in the room, use headphones and turn the volume up. If you are so insecure that you really care what random people think of your voice well I guess you are just screwed. You could get a blu-tooth headset too if you need to do other things during down time, you can even get an adapter if you computer doesn't support it.
MMORPG's will keep getting faster paced and VOIP will become more and more nessicary.
Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open. Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.
I only use it with raids or running 5 mans with my guild, but other than that, I generally don't want to hear some stupid kid, bf2, bf 2142, etc. sure i enjoy those games like everyone else, but i don't want to hear you, plus talking in my room by myself to the computer is a low i don't want to experience....
some of my guildmates are on vent all the time though... even when they aren't logged into the game. that seems kinda ridiculous to me... but whatever

Words of absolute wisdom
I wanted to post something like this when I read that ignorant post but I just couldn't find the words to properly articulate my thoughts. Good job on that one
"MMORPG's will keep getting faster paced and VOIP will become more and more nessicary"
Maybe that's the problem. Maybe the MMORpg is evolving into something some of the oldschool players like myself and some others might not want to.
And also while I played DAoC a few months back I had to do some dragon raiding and the leader was in favor of using vent. I listened in but didn't talk. I didn't feel the need. I knew what I was doing and what I was supposed to do but did it to humour him anyways. But like mehhem said there were a few people connecting to his vent that didn't even play the damn game. They would pop in and go "mind if I just hang here while I eat my cheeseburger flavored pizza I just nuked?" and then continue to talk while chewing food and throwing in comments while not knowing the particulars of a conversation.
I don't know about you but I'm being social right now while I type this, post on these forums and the like. We're not using Vent/TS here so by some of your accounts we're all being very anti-social and hate others. I think the massive influx of new players into the genre is changing the landscap of games all together. Pretty soon the way this is going there won't be much distinction between games IMO. It will just be a massive conglomorate called MMORPGFPSRTSMUDspaceSIM with flight simulator peripherals.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Old gamers in their 30's? Get real.. I would hardly consider 30 as being old, considering over half of gamers are around age 30!
You guys are all anti social, MMO is about meeting new people, VOIP is great for that. if you don't like the people you're chatting to, you should join a different guild.
The last time I checked...one didn't need to talk to be social.
im sry but voip isnt a "issue".
I've never met you before, but I can tell you right now that your narrow definition of how MMOs should be played firmly locks you into the group that should be denied internet access.

Sure, sounds fine to me.
/agree with OP

+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_
Siggy under construction
Actually EQ never intended to force you into the holy trinity IMO. People did it because it was the most efficient want to play and it caught on. A similar thing happened with raiding. Raiding was never intended, but people combined groups to take down mobs they weren't supposed to take down and the devs then developed a group type of interface for raiding to compliment that. Most of what you see in MMOs today is because the players pushed the games to their limits.

You could get a blu-tooth headset too if you need to do other things during down time, you can even get an adapter if you computer doesn't support it.MMORPG's will keep getting faster paced and VOIP will become more and more nessicary.

I wanted to post something like this when I read that ignorant post but I just couldn't find the words to properly articulate my thoughts. Good job on that one"MMORPG's will keep getting faster paced and VOIP will become more and more nessicary"
-Madimorga-
