No your not alone. I'm an old school gamer (old skool is an oxymoron.) Talking on a headset while I play my MMOG of choice completely and utterly ruins the immersion for me. Especially when some snot nosed 14 year old is on the other end calling his enemies 'noobs' that he is 'pwning.' How 'ub3r' he is or how 'wack' some situation is. Completely brings me back into reality.
Thankfully the only MMOG I ever was asked to start doing this in was WoW for high lvl raids. I don't play WoW anymore so I don't use any of that crap. My next MMOG is most likely Age of Conan and in a guild that is an old original AO guild, 3305 Local, that mostly consists of old gamers in their 30's. So if we do use voice chat, I won't have to deal with any brain-dead kids. I don't mind kids, I have kids. But when I'm trying to immerse myself into a virtual environment. I don't want to have to deal with kids at that particular moment lol.
I guess for these kids it's faster to talk then to peck out something on a keyboard. Not for me, I type about as fast as most people talk, or near bouts. Accept for my wife's sister.
Old gamers in their 30's? Get real.. I would hardly consider 30 as being old, considering over half of gamers are around age 30!
You guys are all anti social, MMO is about meeting new people, VOIP is great for that. if you don't like the people you're chatting to, you should join a different guild.
The last time I checked...one didn't need to talk to be social.
Lol are you serious? VOIP is a big part of MMO's, to me it's what makes them what they are. I am sorry but yea, I feel if you can't join vent you are being anti-social.
Let me clarify, if you join a guild, and you know they'll be raiding and using vent, and you don't join, you are at fault. If you want to join a raiding guild that doesn't use it, more power to you. The way you are talking is, a guild with 40 people using vent should cater to you because you don't want to use it! of course people will think you are rude and antisocial.
If you don't like it, find people who don't like it as well, don't expect others to cater to you because you want to ignore them.
Symone is just more proof that having a voice doesn't mean you have anything intelligent to say. If you don't use voice chat you're being anti-social? Maybe when you get a life with more REAL LIFE relationships than online ones you will appreciate that the rest of humanity is not interested in hearing me talk/argue about things that don't exist to people I don't really know while they're trying to do things like sleep, raise a child, read a book, watch tv etc. y'know, the things the other 98% of people on earth do inside their homes that don't have anything to do with mmos, let alone voip on them. In all likelihood you are some sort of yougster, or a very ,very lonely adult to believe that talking to people online all day about events that never really happened, involving imagenary characters, in a universe that doesn't exist makes you social. I remember when that made you schizophrenic. Get a life. A real one. With other real people in it. Preferably a spouse and some kids. Maybe then you'll understand its just a game and your judgments made about real people based on something as meaningless as whether they use voip in an online game or not will be thrown to the wayside. its a preference made for many reasons, many of which have been listed here, but this seems to have escaped your notice. Time to get off your high horse and deal with the fact most people have real lives that voip doesn't fit into or simply don't like it.

Lol are you serious? VOIP is a big part of MMO's, to me it's what makes them what they are. I am sorry but yea, I feel if you can't join vent you are being anti-social.
hmm...anti-social.... or hard of hearing, or English is your second language, or sharing the room you're playing in, or you prefer immersive play, or have an embarrassing voice....
Actually, the most telling thing for me, is that the last two posters who seem to have trouble understanding why some people don't want to use VOIP, both referred to the games as MMOs. As I said earlier in the thread, different people seem to want different things from these games and can have difficulty understanding the others' viewpoint. Personally, I tend to play MMORPGs.
The thing is the keyboard needs to be used for combat at all time to perform well. You can't type and fight well at the same time, unless you can type with one hand and do all the combat with the mouse. If you can't hear or don't want to disturb other people in the room, use headphones and turn the volume up. If you are so insecure that you really care what random people think of your voice well I guess you are just screwed. You could get a blu-tooth headset too if you need to do other things during down time, you can even get an adapter if you computer doesn't support it.
MMORPG's will keep getting faster paced and VOIP will become more and more nessicary.
How does wearing headphones make it so that your voice is quieter when you talk on voip?
If the battle you are fighting is so high paced, how is it good RP to be able to be holding a conversation at the same time? Most of the things your character might need to shout can easily be set to hot keys or macros.
If voip is becoming more necessary then the chances are that the games are becoming less RP and more MMOG, so I couldn't agree with your statement anyway.
I don't think it needs to be as extreme as having voip and non-voip servers, but clearly it's becoming an important issue in terms of guild description, in the same way as you would describe the level or RP expected in the guild.
I guess im anti-social as well. In my job I do a few oral presentations every day and have to communicate with clients, and at the end of day when i sit down at my computer I really prefer text communication over voice communication. I am not keen to hear other people's voices I consider them as just a bit more sophisticated NPC's anyway
To all the RP whores out here. I'm not sure what you seem to think RPing is ?
I see alot of people say, RP is not about killing the other guy, but about doing what would racially seen be the only choice! fierce attack and fight to the death!! Well, great for you guys, but does that other person feel the same ? Because he's really not going to wait for you shouting your racial language nonsense about your ancestors and their ancestors and the wrongs they had to suffer under the control of said opponent!!
RP is _quite_ fuzking impossible in any MMO at this given time. RP is being able to fill in your own role, without boundaries set by an invisible wall, created by the game. Pretending to talk like a dwarf when you are a dwarf, is an element of roleplaying, but doesn't fundamentally make you a good roleplayer.
Roleplayers are in-character, always! In other words, 99% of you that say they hate VOIP because of it taking your RP moments away, are straight liars to begin with. It's completely impossible that every single one of you is in-character 100% of the time. I've played on RP servers in WoW, well, make my day guys, but even the most hardcore RP guilds, were more a gathering of "cocky English aristocrats ( you know, the way of speaking) instead of the BUM their clothings gave them away to be. Immersion my ass.
The only games that allow for pure RP, are games that offer an unlimited variety in clothing, skills, way to progress in a game ( basically, maybe other things than killing gives experience) where people can perform a profession that places them in a position in the game, without 100 other people doing the exact same thing, standing around the corner. "Hey look at me, I'm the best blacksmith in the world" * 100 others* "ME TOO!"
I think the only real RP moments, are either Pen and Paper games, or Textbased games, such as MUDs.
Besides, most of you were probably born way past the era of pen and paper. You don't even have a clue what RP is.
If you were absolutely forced to use VOIP then this would be a valid argument. But you can easily sway the leader to let you go without it. Or just be in there and have it muted, heh they won't know the difference.

While I agree that current mmorpgs don't lend themselves to role-playing in quite the same way that MUDs and P&P games do, that's not to say that there is no opportunity to role-play just because you are limited.
I don't really understand what you're saying. If you don't role-play 100% of the time, then you're not role-playing at all? And who said anything about talking like a dwarf or acting like aristocrats? There's more than one way to role-play.
If all you do is only talk about the world you're living in and refer to events in the way your character would perceive them, you are role-playing. If some 12 year old is screaming at his mother to let him play for another 10 minutes, or the guy playing the elf starts talking about a football game, that kind of immersion (however limited that may be) is ruined.
If your profile is correct, then I'm not sure you're in any position to be accusing others of being ignorant because they were born past the pen and paper era.
I'm with the OP.. Voice chat has ruined some gaming experiences for me...
For the while that I played World of Warcraft, it was my experience that only the best of the best guilds REQUIRED voice chat. To me, it was very important to be with the best, because I wanted to access all the content I could.. But in order to do that, I HAD to use voice chat...
I can be quite antisocial, and voice chat is quite consuming. I don't even like using the phone, to 'voice chat' with FRIENDS.. let alone random gamers. I enjoy listening to music, which is nearly impossible on Vent, sometimes. Many times, I would mute all of Vent and just play my iTunes in the background, but there were a few occurrences where that cost me some DKP.
I understand it being a convenient alternative to typing... but what I don't understand is why many people think it's a necessity. Are most gamers that uncoordinated?
Voice chat also ruins the gaming environment for me, because of obnoxious people (almost every competent guild has them). It's a lot harder to ignore an overbearing voice spouting childish nonsense coming from your speakers than it is the text in the corner of your screen. Just to play a game, I'm obligated to listen to the people I was hoping I said goodbye to at the end of high school. It has become just another area where I HAVE TO tolerate idiots in my life, just for a certain reason. Certainly takes the fun out of things.
Needless to say, voice chat has been more burdensome personally than it has been beneficial.
I honestly have to say Voice chat should only stick to games like FPS. I will use them on FPS, Xbox Live, but I will NOT use voice for a MMO. It just kills the whole point of communicating in the game. Plus, I like to run at my own pace, there is no way in hell I'm going to be listening to someone giving me order. I hope WoW doesn't shoot itself in the foot with this one.

Im replying to those that say their RP is interrupted when they use VOIP. Therefore assuming that they RP 100% of the time as it is now.
