I will assume that you didn't mean to be rude just that you're semi-literate. True, there are some SF mmorpgs out there but, as you said yourself, 'there just not all that great'. EVE is a wonderful battleship game but its not really an RPG. I haven't even heard of 'cox'. Did you mean 'CoH' or 'CoV'. The whole point is, there are no SF MMORGs as sophsiticated as WoW and LOTRO - and I wish there were. Specifically, I think a Dr. Who or a Dune mmorpg would be great. That's just an expression of desire, not 'whinning' as you so eloquently put it.

Sci-Fi in the MMO genre is basically untapped.

Im sorry I didnt mean it that way, I should of put a wink in there. But aside from that I dont see the harm in fiction games for instance a futuristic with elements of fiction in it and etc, I agree I get tired of the same old thing to. But iI think TS will be great and Aion might even be good crossing my fingers on that. All we can do is be patient.

Btw have you tried ryzom yet?

I did try Rhyzom but only very briefly and, for some reason, it did not appeal at all. I think it was simply because it did not offer the visual richness that the games brought out by the big, well-financed companies can offer (though those same companies can often screw up a game - like SOE did with SWG). I hope TS will be good too - though I still wish some clever company would mine the Dr. Who or Dune franchises simply to provide their excellent, deep level content and all the possibilities that presupposes.

    Hmmm like who?

Sorry bro, not sure how you came to that conclusion. "What was very briefly"? Ryzom easily holds up to more current games.

Relax - I am not making any point about Ryzom except to say that for a very brief period indeed, perhaps only the length of an afternoon, I played it and did not enjoy it. I have played many - or at least some seven or eight MORPGs - and found that all of them 'hooked' me for longer than Ryzom. That is not Ryzom's fault, it just did not appeal to me personally. I do understand that it has a large and loyal following.

I personally could not get into ryzom eieither it was the skills that bugged me the most I felt them lacking, while they where very creative/imaginative it just didnt feel right to me, but ive seen some videos and the exploration in that game is pretty cool.

I think a Terry Pratchett, Discworld MMORPG would be great!  You could have a field day with character customization,  a really varied and interesting world and a really rich history and story-line.

But most importantly would be to give it that priceless sense of humor the books have!

And where else would you get to ride on a disc on the back of four elephants atop a huge turtle

LOL, agreed  - yes, the Pratchett Looniverse would make a wonderful mmorpg.

Its cool, sorry if it came across in a aggressive manor. I need to be brief at times, I'm at work.

One thing that does put many people off about Ryzom is the art style. As far as a "large" following ....unfortunately thats not the case.

Dune or Discworld would be interesting.

I lean more toward original IP's however as players tend to base their expectations on preconceived ideas of what the game will be like.  Then there is usually a pretty sever backlash when it doesn't turn out how the fans want it. See SWG, DDO and the Matrix. You can even see it in the LotR reactions. Star Trek is another ticking time bomb. They are already up in arms over the design direction that game has taken and its still over a year from launch. Building games on IP's is risky business.

    Dr Who MMORPG?

When you can travel anywhere in time and space, that's a pretty big ask of any games developer!

  • shaeshae Member Posts: 2,509

A Dune MMORPG was in developement some time ago and had gotten fairly far in the process when unfortunately the production team went belly up and plopped itslef and the project, never to be seen or heard from again.

At the time there was no interest (read this as no one smart enough) to take over the project and that was the end of that. Some rumor mills have suggested that a team somewhere has purchased the old code and is working on it again, although rumors are as good as they are credible and well... that's pretty self eplanotory.

  • fansedefansede Member UncommonPosts: 960

Hmm, an interesting concept. However, would it fit a model for a massive multiplayer game? From what i remember of Dr. Who is more or less a solo guy on adventures or the more recent BBC TV series, a few support cast members supporting Dr. Who.

Game design could be relatively simple: Instances. (Dr. Who and team enter in their telephone closet and pop into next instance)

Character development I guess would be skill based. No formal professions I suppose.

What other character customization would you have? Upgrade your time machine?

    What economy would you have?

The challenges you could offer would be more intellectual than weapon combat fights. How is Myst: URU doing as a game?

Heh heh. Agreed. I love Dr. Who (both its original run and the revamped series) but it is way too big a "world" to cover in an MMORPG. And even with the popularity of the series worldwide, the show basically has a cult following when you compare it to Star Trek or any other number of sci-fi series. Even if the mechanics of the game and the game world itself were something that could be pulled off well I'm not sure it's an IP that would mean huge returns for a developer outside of the UK. Would be funny though...

/whisper <Timelord13> Hey, can you give me a hand with a prison break on Shada?

Dr. Who would have to be set before the Time wars then if they did one since the Doctor IS the last time lord and you know everyone would want to be a time lord .

Dune....i dunno strange movie and lots of sand...i'd get tired of sand

now Steampunk would be interesting it would have to be done right and with our luck the Koreans would make it an item mall and that....would suck.

Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!

Never seen Dr Who, so can't say anything about that :)

But as i'm currently in the progress of reading the dune-series, i must say i would love to see an MMO based on that :) ... the story is pretty rich, and there is enough content for different races, classes and large world . I did notice though that they implemented the facedancer in Chronicles of Spellborn, but changed the name to SkinShifter lateron ( maybe for legal rights? ) ...

Me too am desperatly searching for something new... i tried almost every trial out there for the past 2 years ... and currently  i find myself playing the 2 week trial of swg again ( i LOVED that game ... long time ago).

Indeed, we need something different ... something new .... and most important, something immersive !!!!

Other options also sounded cool, like Discworld ... or maybe The crazy planet Tschai from Jack Vance :)

Ps: The sand in Dune is mainly on Arrakis, Calagan however is a green/blue planet :) ..

It's cool that this topic came up, I was just thinking about a lot of this yesterday so I'll share it with you guys.  Keep in mind, this concept is about oh.....24 hours old so it's chock full of unfinished ideas and half baked concepts.  Might be a fun game though.

    Game concept

    Name – Time War

Below the surface of society a war has been building for centuries.  Gates will allow players to travel from timeline to timeline in order to gain kills, steal secrets and gain additional powers.

Initial Concept – A MMORPG that would allow users to play a variety of different classes each with it’s own separate criteria for leveling.  It will encompass a wide variety of classic mythological characters each with it’s own ability to reach godhood in it’s class.

The game will focus on solo play with PvP being the stimulus/and means to keep leveling.

Players will be have the option of restarting the game as any class but will only be allowed to have one character per account.

    Classes –

Renaissance Warrior – Classic MMO warrior able to wear heavy armors use Melee weapons and take tremendous amounts of damage while delivering moderate damage. The Warrior will be configurable to use many different types of armor and weapons so that the class can range anywhere from the light fighter to the heavy tank.  The Warrior will be the best at melee and taking damage.  The masters of their environment the Warriors will level quickly to Hero and Demi-god status while being a formidable group melee player and indispensable for raiding.

Contemporary Warrior – This will be the composite of the soldier.  Best at ranged attack the Soldier would be able to employ many different modern technologies to wage their war against the hordes of unnatural creatures that have invaded his timeline.  The Contemporary Warrior will be less configurable than the Renaissance Warrior and will be much more adept at delivering damage than taking it.  Able to use mass communication. Vehicles and weapons of mass destruction the contemporary warrior is a formidable foe on the battlefield of time.

The Vampire – This class would focus on assassination and trickery.  Able to cast illusions on itself to appear as classes from any timeline this character will be the only one able to travel safely throughout time to gain kills.  Restriction, can only group with other vampires.  Ever beautiful ever deadly the Vampire is a recluse who exists mainly for hedonistic purposes.   With the ability to take on the guise of an NPC, or to travel as a native of the land the vampire is difficult to detect and hard to protect against once one has set their sights on you.  Vampirism, the disease, will allow the vampire to locate you anywhere in the world provided you are both in the same timestream and will enable them to see through your eyes (that’s reaching towards nonsense) if they desire.  The only good thing about a vampire is that they can only kill you once.

Werewolves – The Unstable hunters the werewolves will spend most of their lives as Humans with all human traits and characteristics but will be forced to spends several days doing nothing but hunting.  Not a serious threat to any timeline the werewolf will, like the human, be able to manufacture items that will be tradable in game.

Creations – This class will encompass everything from the Frankenstein-like monster to the Golem.  These beasts will usually be unnaturably strong and resistant to damage but will not employ a wide variety of weapons or armor but will be able to group with any other class for their kills.

Mage – The mage class will focus on it’s ability to effect reality.  It will be configurable to do anything from magical healing to dealing extreme group damage but will suffer in melee combat and taking damage.  The Mage class will be one of the only classes able to actually cast buffs on other classes before reaching godhood.

Immortal – From the Highlander mythos.  Immortals like creations will be able to group with all other classes but will only be able to be gain experience by killing other immortals.  Immortals will be configurable to use a wide variety of equipment from all the timelines but will only be able to fight using a sword.  They can group with everyone except for the Vampires and will not lose experience unless killed by another immortal.

Super-Hero – The superhero will be an expert at moving around efficiently.  A mid range combatant the superhero will be configurable to take advantage of many melee and ranged forms of combat and be able to take a lot of damage from any of the other classes save for it’s chosen weakness.  All Superheroes will have a weakness and be especially susceptible to this weakness.  With the ability to travel to many places very quickly the superhero character can act as a protector against the onslaught of raiding enemy timewarriors in many situations.  Superheroes exist in the present timeline

The Future warrior – Able to employ anything from laser guns to light sabers to combat Mechs the future warrior is the master of widespread carnage.  The solo player the future warrior relies on it’s own superior technology to advance through the game.  It will not be able to group with any other classes ever but will be able to trade in technology with other future warriors.  Future Warriors begin the game in the future timeline.

The Masses – The Masses are your basic humans with no special powers for survival.  The special thing about this class however is the power of ingenuity.  The masses alone will be able to marginally protect their selves from the other classes.  They will also be able to create technology that will enhance just about any other character in the game provided that they alone are able to collect the resources.  The masses are the trade skill class and they alone will provide the catalyst for many battles that will occur between the timewarriors.  Ignore them and suffer the consequences.  All classes will have to have a close relationship with humans in order to gain the resources they need to protect themselves against the environments.  Humans exist in all timelines.

    Game concept – Godhood

Each player class will be able to achieve the level of Godhood via steps taken from their max level.  Godhood steps will require the player to amass many forces under their command to achieve the steps needed to gain the power they need to continue.

Game ranks will go as such.

Timewarrior – Base rank.  Able to travel through time gates to gain experience.  Able to quest against their environment in order to gain skills and upgrades.

Hero – Able to form a guild (will later advance to the rank of “Faith” with the achievement of a Diety) of timewarriors based on grouping criteria.  The guild will be the first form of mass communication to all players without the use of the Contemporary warrior.

Demi-God – Able to form raiding parties of more than one group for the purpose of attaining items or achieving kills.

Diety – Able to bestow favors from their class upon other classes provided they are of the same faith (guild).

    How this should go.

Players should be able to travel through the world seeking their own personal improvement while being weary of any and all strangers.  Kinslaying will not be permissible so that players can at least attain a basic social structure among their own classes.  Chat will be very localized so that at no point can the player communicate with another player across zone boundries (this will force players who even have voice programs to have to socialize with others to explore the game) unless via the use of a mass communication device usable only by soldiers.

Players will drop and advance in levels by gaining kills from one another.  These levels will exist to enable the player to use higher levels of skill and gear and for bragging rights.  Players will be able to attain gear via player vs environment styled missions which will exist primarily as solo quests in the early game but will expand into group based quests and even raids later in the game.  All raid zones will exist in timelines other than the classes home timeline and will often be protected centers of commerce to the natives of said timeline.  A player should not be able to make it through this game without coming into contact with another player for good or bad reasons.  Basic item quests will be available to all players in all timelines and will offer a class specific reward upon completion.  The entire game will be reward driven as completing any quest will substantially enchance the player via other players of his level range.  Rewards come in the form of new powers designed towards the players class, it is in this way that the player will be able to configure their character towards specific builds as the game progresses.  Details concerning these quests will be given at public epicenters in each timeline.  The epicenter will be the social hub for each player class. It will be in these places only that the chat channels will widen to allow a smaller form of mass communication.

The look of the different timelines will range in variety and open up the game for many expansions as it grows.  Endgame mobs too will vary based on perceived epic creatures from each of these classes.  In other words, a Dracula or Lestat type character could be considered a very huge guy to vampires.  These characters then would be the exact people that say the future warriors might go up against to gain an edge over the vampires.  The rewards for defeating them would go accordingly.

The environment will be hostile in almost all places save the epicenter and it’s surrounding areas and food, space restrictions and shelter will play a large role in the players ability to venture out into the world to attain more items.

    The typical epicenter.

    The kingdom of Vinus Krill.

The kingdom of Vinus Krill consists of a large castle surrounded by an even larger city.  Inside the kingdom or the castle players will be able to hear in a wider radius than they would in the wilderness and all goods are bought and sold and traded here.  Buying, selling, and trading will be disabled outside of the kingdom unless the players are members of the same guild or faith.  Throughout the city there will be NPC’s speckled about who will instruct players on how to achieve certain rewards to enhance their ability to travel and attain kills.  The first quest in the game will be for food and shelter as these things are required to venture anywhere past the newbie starting areas of the city.  The newbie starting areas will provide the players with a reasonably safe haven from which to basically equip their selves but past that point all bets are off.  Outside of the kingdom the environment can affect a player in any way ranging from heatstroke to freezing.  Rain will cause severe visibility problems and random natural events will tear down structures built to house characters outside of the city limits.  This is what humans are for.  Humans will be able to do most of their leveling inside the safety of the kingdom but will be required to leave the kingdom to gather the resources needed to gain those levels or make those good.  No other player will be able to harvest for the humans, they must do this their selves but they will be able to equip their selves with the best structural defenses to do so later in the game.  Human players will be able to set up shops within the city limits to sell their goods and will actually be able to change the face of the city via shop upgrades.  Tradeskilling will actually be a business.

    Timelines

Future – Future Warriors, Humans, Superheroes, Creations

Present – Humans, Superheroes, Contemporary Warriors

Past – Renaissance Warriors, Humans, Mages, Creations

Ancient – Vampires, Creations, Werewolves, Immortals

    Eeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!

That's a bit of stretch don't you think? Don't get me wrong, I'm not Miss love George-a-lot () but if Star Wars was ripped off from anything I'd look more to Camelot than Dune. Dune and it's 5 sequels are much more detailed pieces of writting than Star Wars ever was and have very little in common.

Hehehe Check the table on this page: http://www.spookybug.com/origins/dune.html
The little thief was clearly influenced! ;)

Haven't thought about Camelot myself, interesting. Luke is more an angsty Hamlet-like teenager to me than a King of all of Britain.
