Characters and armor look bad?

eccotoneccoton Member UncommonPosts: 1,340

One of the comments I have heard about LOTRO is that the armor and characters look bad and bland. I am not sure what game some of these people are playing. I think the armor looks great and characters look alive. The subtle movement of the characters is amazing. Not only do they blink their eyes but their eye balls move around not just stare forward. Here is a picture of my latest armor on one of my toons. I do not know about others but I think it look great. I would love to see some others characters. So if you have them post picks of your toon.

when you're used to playing the cartoon chars of WoW, sometimes looks can be deceiving.

lol that guy is pretty far from looking 'cool'...

I can understand that the colors seem bland, but this is Middle Earth and not Disco Stu's MMO.

The reason people complain is that they are using the low res client and don't have their graphics settings turned up.

I read one review where they guy said the graphics stunk, but then he later found out he had the low res client.

I wished people would do research before they start bashing something that everyone else thinks is good. Especially graphic details.

There is better armor in the game. That doesn't look like Heavy Armor though.

Some of it does look a bit "wonky".

lol.. some of the hats are pretty cool in a very "novel" sort of way.

I agree that people can say that they don't like it. What I meant was that if people say that the color of the sky is so blue and the cloud details are great, but you see green blob and say you don't like it, maybe there is a setting wrong on your PC.

I play on very low settings because I like the response time. If I judged the game on that detail and said it was ugly and poor, would I be justified?

I said I agree that the armor is bland. If someone says, "The armor is too boring, I don't like it". They are justified because that is their opinion (and a fact as far as I am concerned).

People can't say that somone's opinion is wrong. They could agrue over some of the facts that lead to the person's point of view.

Sorry, I must not be fully awake and wasn't clear.

Come on it is pretty cool looking . Definetly not the best in game. It is only a lvl 28 character with medium armor. I mainly wanted to post it to show the attenion to detail in the armor. Everyone has their own personel tastes. Mine may not be the best because I like my armor in EQ2 as well.

    Screenshots?

Well I have one of my dwarf when he was a lowbie. He was kitted out in medium leathers at the time, and a pretty unusual dwarven helmet. This shot was taken in the prancing pony when I was just sitting around taking a time out and RPing a little.

I think that LOTO could use more armour styles, but there's enough to be going on with until Turbine add various armour sets in the upcoming June expansion. We have all the basic armour types right now, but the fancy stuff is yet to arrive. I'm content enough to wait.

If you were to show me screenshots of the game and ask me to take a stab at the setting, Middle-Earth would be pretty far down the list of my guesses.

For me, the characters look like generic fantasy characters.   They could be fine in a D&D campaign, but one of the great strengths of Middle-Earth was the sense of reality of the world.

I suppose Turbine wanted to make sure that characters looked cool enough to meet the standards of current MMORPGs, but I just don't think those standards should have applied to Middle-Earth.

Edit - Ok, that last dwarf screenshot looks pretyy good, that armor looks like it's actually functional, not some 3-D model created by an artist.   But most of the human armor I've seen hasn't looked as decent.   I realized another problem with some of the human armor I've seen is that there appears to be a mix of culture and historical period types, there doesn't seem to be a consistent feel to them.

I heard that the high level armor actually does look pretty cool. I'm yet to see any screenies although I'm not exactly searching them out. :)

I stand by my statement that this particular guy doesn't look cool lol

The dwarf SS looks better I have to say.

Waiting for SS of some of the high level stuff.
  • killerwigkillerwig Member UncommonPosts: 236

Just popped back into the game to take another SS of my dwarf in standard heavy armour at level 24.

And a sort of dramatic shot.. heh:

    Still kind of fruity.

Are there any screenies of really cool looking high level armor around yet? or is it a little soon?

    (perhaps some beta shots?)

my only real complaint with LoTRO is the total lack of plate mail that actually looks like platemail

I could understand the lower level heavy armor consisting of a single chest plate and some chain, but when you stick in that design pretty much all the way through your levels, you're really missing out.

Honestly, I remember finding Light armor that looked more protective than some Heavy Armor.

Fans of Cloth, Leather, and Chain mail: You'll be fine

Fans of Plate/"super-heavy-plate" : Go play WoW

Well here is my Dwarf Bimby he is only level 10 so only get medium armor. Now this is bland but still the attention to detail is great.

The armor in LotRO is pretty distinctive from other games. It also is consistent with the materials available in Middle Earth giving it authenticity. The over all design of the LotRO armor is pleasingly refreshing to me , also think the subtle "V" neck line on the female is just enough to give a feeling of sensuality without looking like a whore.

I am pretty much a fanboy but I have to say that this game has the ugliest damn helmets and hats I have ever seen. I keep mine set to invisible in options.

The armor in Lotro sure makes Wow's armor look like it was pulled from a comic book.

    Bah, comic books...

World of Warcraft's armor style was very, very, obviously taken from GWAR.

YAY GWAR only good thing in this post!!! P.S ive played FF11/WoW/EQ 2/VG/Lineage 2/Guildwars/LOTR beta/CoV/CoH only good ones are CoV/CoH/WoW but i don't even play those anymore nothing out there worth paying for. im not a fan boy i play every genre on every system im neutral to all games and not  one sided towards anything i can even rip on wow if it would satisfy some of this board.

Well, each to his. I didnt actually love the LOTRO chars (my fav is still SWG and EQ2 SOGA), but I am glad LOTRO hasnt the cartoonish kiddy-WOW look. But really, since you seem to be a Conan-fan, sorry to say, but arent the Conan characters looking much the same, from what I've seen? Since AoC is a fast paced PVP centric game I expect the characters much more simplified.

We all have our own preferrence to style. LOTRO is ok but a bit... I cant say, the faces look a bit square and non-elegant, but 80% of all MMOs have that style, so what? I only wish the human male faces werent all so... fat and square, like the standart EQ2 male humans too, and those of WOW. As if every male would be bulky. Tsk. But the serious style of the armour is good, not those pink Level 70 parrots WOW is littered with! *shudders*

I have seen a lot of cool lv 40-50 armour recently - when my Spider killed them, haha! Next time I will try to ask them to stand still for a screenshot before I eat them.
