I am confused why you equate sales with a good game?

Mass public opinion is rarely a reliable barometer of quality... or do you like everything thats popular?

Completely agree.  Same thing with anything else really.  Cars lets say.  Some people love BMWs some hate them.  We all don't think alike :P.

You should get a buddy key and try the game out yourself. Nothing anyone say here, or you hear otherwise, will give you the information you can get from a 10-day trial.

No one can tell you why a game is good, only you can decide that :)

I am confused as to why you would equate good sales with a bad game. I guess you think Vanguard  or Dark and light should have a million subscribers.

Ah, please people, not that discussion again.... some members here will go on and on but to say the truth, it lies somewhere in between. in my opinion most games (talking more of single player series) are like movies, where the first one is good and the follow -ups ussually suck. same rule applies to mmo's and their updates and expansions that become comercialised and loose the begining feel of the game and the only thing that keeps you playing is the community u got to know so well of course there are exeptions just look at EQ2, it is a decent game now (i won't say "good" not to make someone argue again). therefore, both points that measuring the games success by sales and opposite can be backed up :))))))

If you are around long enough on this website, you will know that the scores don't mean anything.  It's very inaccurate and biased.  The majority of people who vote for this game either give it a 10 or 0, it just so happens there's a lot of LOTR fans out there to give this game a 10.  Ofcourse, the game is decent itself, but the voting system on this website is not.

I wasnt aware that I did.

Can you please show me where I did?

It's probably a bad thing to try and guess what people think who you don't know, on an assumed point.

btw, at it's heart VG is actually better as a 'game' then LotR, it's the performance issues and bugs that ruin it imo.

I guess this the reason people troll in the first place... dosent that make you a troll yourself? Someone who just posts to inflame an agrument and all?

We are not discussing 'success' here, because that is also a subjective term based on an individuals own set of of conditions, we are talking about someone posting an obvious attempt at supporting LotR as the 'best' game out there based on sales (ie. the charts he linked).

Therefore my asking the questions I have asked of him are valid. Why post sales charts if the sales figures of the game arnt important to him? Just to troll?

If not, I guess some people draw strength from being in the flock.

Lotro is the number 1 MMORPG now because of the graphics, the sound and the almost bugfree game...and to say that large sales are not an indication of a great game..i laugh at their face..look at wow..the numbers show that it is a great game..only its time is almost up..the graphics are outdated, the TBC killed al those peoples hard work to get tier equipment..it is time to move on and LOTRO gives people the new shot..simple.

    game on.

How do numbers show a great game, or a great *anything* for that matter?

History would tell you that the most popular things tend to be derivative, bland, simplified, watered down product that has been homogenenised and marketed to appeal to the widest dynamic possible.

LotR, as is WoW I agree, is a great example of this.

VG should have been the game we are all playing atm thats for sure. Maybe im just getting to old, but challange and depth that I was expecting was just a timesink. I guess its always been that way though. Or maybe it was just too easy to figure out becuase I've played too many games and figuring out what something did was the reason you did it in the first place. So I didnt feel like doing it since i knew what it was gonna be. I dunno...but I couldnt log in anymore. I just couldnt. Maybe it was SOE. ANd releasing early...for shame! In all honesty though, it was probably WoW envy again that was the true culprut. Now it just reminds me of swg history repeating itself so i try and keep away.

if you judge a game that you never played, than youre not better than John Smedley from SOE.

he changes the style of a game he never played, you can see the results of it with the NGE disaster..

so play the trial and dont give a fuck about what people say..

I played lord of the rings online, it is not complex as the pre-cu star wars galaxies I loved, but I found myself having the best fun in years in a game...

I never thought that a game so simple and easy as lotro could ever get me hooked...

thast not the first time a new game gets number one on this list, but only if the game has good quality it will be able to stay on top of the list for a longer time.

will be interesting to see how long loto can stay up there, and if it will fall back behind older games after the hype and newness drops or if it will be there till a new game pushes it from top.

personally i'm not too impressed by lotro it has nice backgroundgraphics that run good on most computers, but else than that its nothing really new.
