Someone should of chucked water on your head. i mean how dim are you? Look at life if you hated puzzles soo much then, you should of really killed yourself along time ago. If you think what is happening now is not a puzzle, then you are really borderlining on either joking around or complete stupidtiy.
Sorry, it might be harsh, but is the best i could say instead of dancing around the bush.
I think having puzzles to solve is GREAT!! Just one more thing that excites me about this game. Sure, you can focus on combat and building your character if you want, but having puzzles to solve if you choose is a great feature. I hope they are Zelda-like puzzles.
I see puzzles, if well-implemented, as a welcome addition to gameplay.
What bothers me about this article is that the impression I got from Ybarra's earlier comments in the interview suggest that combat will be heavily downplayed in comparison to other MMOs.

According to this survey, I'm an item-whoring ganker. I guess I should have stuck with WoW then...lmao.
If the puzzles were done well i think it would do well in a mmorpg, since if you play real rpgs they have puzzles in and it works well... why cant a mmorpg be the same hmm. :P
I don't see an issue, as some say, as long as they are implimented correctly there shouldn't be a problem. I mean a little challenge to keep your mind sharp is not a bad thing.
Heaven forbid we should use our brains heh
So I say good for them for placing puzzles. Most RPG games you would see quests and most of them are like puzzles. I think it's a good thing. It's a lot more fun then kill kill kill all the time. Sure Action rocks in a game, but you need a little more than just killing a person or animal in a game.
If it is absolutely unthinkable that a MMO will have you using your brains dont play it. Simple as that.
And stop referring to Puzzles as gay. I mean come on. You create a topic and the least you can do is try to act a little credible instead of a little child.
Of course not, It may hurt our brain cells and you know how precious those are. We shouldn't tax them, who knows they might break!
Hey, if you wanna play this sort of game, go play Puzzle Pirates.
I dont like Puzzle Pirates. I say again, they shouldnt pollute Stargate Worlds with gay puzzles.
Stargate SG-1 is about action. And also about fixing problems in-game. Not stupid puzzles.
You fanboys are impossible to reason with. You are blind, dumb idiots that cant think for themselves.
Stargate SG-1 team fixed things with other content elements. They didnt do stupid cross-word puzzles to save Earth. They actually did stuff within the gameworld. However, now this reveals that they cant make a simulated world so they wanna make it into Puzzle Pirates.
I dont care what you think, I know I wont try it until they have toned down the puzzle elements.
If you want to spend two hours on an extremely intricate puzzle that unlocks a high-end skill-set or area, then thats YOUR PROBLEM. I dont want to. Its NOT FUN to me. I would rather PK you while you solve your little puzzle. To me, thats fun. To you, maybe you like to prove to yourself how smart you are. I dont need puzzles to tell me how smart I am, and I also dont think puzzles are fun. Psssh. Basically, I think that they will do some puzzles like in "Davinci's Code" (which ware cool) and also do some others like in "A Tale In the Desert III" (also very cool). If it does involve puzzles, than ATITD is something they should think of (at least the leveling system).
Hopefully it will be a combination of the two mention above )
I read the article and all I have to say is thank goodness they are going this route. I'd love to see an mmorpg that had good puzzles. It will be even better if they are group puzzles. I can't wait for SGW!
Ammon, the reason these guys aren't taking your post seriously is because of the comments like "Because of this i am no longer buying this game!"
Thats a pretty immature and blatant statement in its own. You don't like one aspect, so you grill the entire game to the back shelf? Come on now. These puzzles probably won't be like those you find online that are extremely difficult. You won't walk up to some alien tomb and have to play Sudoku for an hour just to get in.
They'll be simple puzzles anyone can do with little frustration to add some uniqueness to the game. Think of it like gathering keys to a high level dungeon. Its a task, but it adds to the game and you'll do it to get the 'phat lewt' waiting beyond.
Trust me, its not as bad as you think... err won't be. Trust me.

Very negative post I just don't understand the approach by the OP doesn't acheive much. I think I will wait a while to pass judgement... This could be so much fun the scope for variety may kill this game if it isn't managed well... Thats my worry. Not going off on a bender regarding Puzzles....

Seriously thinking, this puzzle-thing worries me a bit. I can see some really nice applications for it, like when crafting, your skill in some realtime puzzle would determine the quality of the item somewhat. That would be superb.
On the other hand, in the missions, if the puzzles are somewhat stagnant and so, the internet will be flooded with the answers - not good. The puzzles need to be integrated to the game very seamlessly and with high quality. Im sincerely hoping they can do that. Sincerely.

I'd absolutly buzz if the game involved puzzle's as hard as 1hour sodoku's, then you know your solving REAL puzzles!!! 1+1+2+2+3+3=door password ain't a puzzle..............
Also they could do complicated jigsaws for wall tablets and the like! Also things like needing to actually learn new language's, will be interesting quests? surely we will get such options. It has the potential to be absolutly amazing, basing itself off one of the best sci fi's of all time.....
lets just pray the dev's strive for something so good...

lets just pray the dev's strive for something so good...I think that the game is going to be awesome because it's stargate what more could I want. But then theres that thing about "complicated jigsaws" and, "Learning new launguages" and, "learning" I go to school to learn, I will not be happy if i have to learn. sure a quick thing like in the episode where they first meet merlins knights where they had to choose between the right pot, those i'd be ok with but nothing that involves learning, and Hard thinking to where i wanna throw my computer out the window.
Future Alliance Leader in the Upcoming MMO StarGate Worlds
I was gonna try this game Stargate Worlds because its an awesome show series; but as it stands, I just dont enjoy puzzles in my games. It shows that they really dont have much content in the game if they have to resort to gay puzzles.
No thanks, I'm not buying it. Role-playing games dont really need puzzles because they should be immersive in other ways. Ugly puzzles (*especially* when their difficulty gets worse as you progress) blocking enterance to a zone or (especially) an ability, frankly, annoy the fuck out of me. No thanks.
I will not be buying Stargate Worlds now, unfortunately. There are plenty of other MMORPG options that dont have gay puzzles that take the place of lack of content. Upcoming games like, say, Darkfall, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Unleash the Fury, to name a few...
This actually makes me pretty angry.
Seriously, I do not see much of an audience for content-unlocking puzzles in the MMO crowd. Players want fun, not frustration.
Bad move for Stargate Worlds, IMO.
I have written them off my list of games to buy, permanently.
One thing... The puzzles are supposed to build the immersion, as specific to the Arcaeologist archetype and the scientist achetype. If you hate the idea so much go post it on forums.stargateworlds.com, I've been a member for the better part of a year there, and I can garrenty you'll either get "The game is still in the pre-alpha stage it's likely to change" or you'll just be shot down as most of the forum community wants this :P.
Reading this, I feel sorry for OP. It can not be easy being... him. All that anger, and not even knowing what he is angry about. Like Paris Hilton when she see a book.
well thats unfortunate that you think that way about the game... but a RPG MMO shouldn't just only be somthing like Kill X and Y there should be more to it .. and well with puzzles it in my opionion would actually appeal to those that don't like the fighting aspect in modern MMO's . not to mention the fact that a change is nice and puzzles should have been placed a long time ago in other games
Don't forget the some of the puzzles may not be literally solve this. For instance, lets say that the archaeologist in your squad has a "Translation knowledge" of 20. So your squad is on planet P-343 and you come across a chamber filled with ancient hieroglyphics, thus begins one type of the "puzzle" aspect. Rather than the player looking at a journal he/she has in their pack and cross-referencing the hieroglyphics a bar pops up on the archaeologist's HUD. It's a progression bar of the archaeologist translating the hieroglyphics. So the "speed" of translating the glyphs is in relevance of the archeologist's "translation knowledge lvl", so the higher your lvl the faster you can translate glyphs and vice versa. Now some "puzzles" may be visual, where as you need to arrange certain objects found in a room a certain way to trigger a door or some "ancient" power. Keep in mind this is all MY OPINION lol. But i feel that is a pretty good general idea of how it could be done.
Actually, if done right, it sounds very very promising to bring in things like puzzles where we discover new technology, analyze alien artifacts, and open Stargate coordinates. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I say wow, how innovative is that?! I don't care about being "uber" or "pwning" I just want to delve into a game, immerse myself in a world and have a blast. All the games out there now are about a grind or "pwning others in my uber leet gearz."
If the puzzle aspect scares off the 14 years olds, even better. I'd much rather play with other adults.
I am very excited about this game. It's really breaking the mold for the adult gamer.
ya know when I first heard about this game and heard about the gate puzzles and discovering new territories by discovering the right key etc.. I was pretty excited
I mean, I wouldnt expect stargate to NOT have puzzles or mechanics like this. To come to this game and expect otherwise.. just baffles me

I think people need to read the entire thread because the guy said he was mistaken. Yet still people quote the first post and rant.... sigh
Well anyways I do believe that puzzles would be cool if they are actually challenging. It will be a cool way to give non combat roles something to do while the decipher bar is running.
