I am completely on board with the appeal of having puzzles to solve. It would be fun to see a stargate, know the code to use it, but not be able to reach it until you've figured out how to get to it.
Of course, it would be even more fun if you had some creatures shooting at your while you are trying to solve the puzzle! I would love puzzles to solve, but also enjoy blowing sh*$ up.
I was gonna try this game Stargate Worlds because its an awesome show series; but as it stands, I just dont enjoy puzzles in my games. It shows that they really dont have much content in the game if they have to resort to puzzles.
No thanks, I'm not buying it. Role-playing games dont really need puzzles because they should be immersive in other ways. Ugly puzzles (*especially* when their difficulty gets worse as you progress) blocking enterance to a zone or (especially) an ability, frankly, annoy the fuck out of me. No thanks.
I will not be buying Stargate Worlds now, unfortunately. There are plenty of other MMORPG options that dont have gay puzzles that take the place of lack of content. Upcoming games like, say, Darkfall, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Unleash the Fury, to name a few...
This actually makes me pretty angry.
Seriously, I do not see much of an audience for content-unlocking puzzles in the MMO crowd. Players want fun, not frustration.
Bad move for Stargate Worlds, IMO.
I have written them off my list of games to buy, permanently.
EDIT -- Actually I changed my mind... what.... three months ago, about this. Stargate Worlds is gonna rule! (even with puzzles)
Its people like this who are the reason devs make idiot proof mmos. Seriously how is puzzles making up for lack of content? it is content, and if done well its content that can last for ages and not because its time consuming but because its difficult and fun, something that mmos just don't have.
All difficulty ends up being is how long it takes to do something, not actual challenge. Puzzles can be a good diversion from the constant kill this collect that, go here, go there, generic mmo quests, hopefully they add alot of puzzles and well thought out ones that get a lot harder as you level.
I'll take puzzles over stupid time wasting raids anyday.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
Having puzzles is going to ROCK!!! Or should we call them "brainteasers".
It will be a nice diversion from the action. Hopefully solving varioius puzzles will sometimes get you to where you need to go and sometimes allow you to get a new item or extra experience points.
the problem with an MMO with puzzles - there will be websites with all the answers - oh well
I think it's a good thing, so the people that don't want puzzles can just go check the answers, and those that like puzzles and wish to do them will just do them. Of course people that like puzzles might be tempted to check the answers too, but it all comes down to the strength of their will .
I think introducing the puzzle aspect in this game could lead to a new dynamic in the MMO world where you actually have to read clues and follow quest lines to advance. A MMO where the stupid need not apply.
It would be very interesting having to follow clues to solve quests. The last thing I need in Stargate is Kill X Jaffa for Y XP.
The series has always had intelligent plot twists in it. I wan't the game to appeal to the audience that loves stargate. That audience isn't 12 year old Pwnzors with all the loots and leet gearz.
I'm sorry if yall want this game dumed down. I wan't it to be full of puzzles and plot lines and clues......a real RPG. Not the led by the nose mmo's that are plaguing the industry.
I noticed that fairly early the OP abandoned his thread, possibly realizing his tirade was ill-received by the majority who understand the IP means more than shooting the next toon that turns red in front of you. Usually best to cut you losses early when you realize you are wrong.
I look forward to these puzzles and where they lead gameplay.

You won't be the only one to play this game. Some people enjoy mental challenges in games.
