Maybe they mugged him for $1080? I mean you paid your subscription, one part of you must have enjoyed playing their games at some point otherwise you wouldn't have paid for so long
Their communication morals maybe questionable but you clearly loved playing their games for 6yrs, I don't think thats too bad
Firstoff, my thoughts and prayers go out to the Sigil employees that lost their job. Imagine yourself being called into a conference room, or a parking lot, near the close of the business day, and being fired. I'm sure many of them have families and bills to pay, and this leaves them in a difficult position.
Second, for those of you that blame the Sigil employees for the faults in the "Vision:, that is, for a large world with 60% group content, too many unconnected starting areas, poor "LFG" mechanism, and large expanses to travel and fill, I think you are being harsh. The "Vision" was overly aggressive and not attainable within the current hardware parameters. This responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of the lead developer, Brad McQuade. The employees come into work each day and did exactly what they were asked to do. Unlike working at Toyota, most American corporate executives do not want to hear from the rank and file, scum of the earth, employees. If you think I'm wrong, try walking in and telling your corporate President he's doing things all wrong. You will probably be identified as not being a team member, a pessimist, a trouble maker, and get asked to attend a meeting in the parking lot.
It would not surprise me at all to know that the vast majority of the Sigil employees that just lost their jobs are just like you and me, hard working and conscientious people. Rather then kick them when they are down, we should show them some courtesy.
Not so for McQuade, who negotiating himself a good consulting agreement in which his performance is limited. Way to throw your employees under the bus while negotiating a golden parachute for yourself. That is the true "Vision".
First of all no one can claim that soe didnt do anything in this, the truth is you cannot possibly know unless you where there or you know someone who was working for this game, now I know some people here trust soe, but from many of others experiences and others we dont, I dont go around complaining about them but I sure as hek dont like there products and will not waste my money on them.
It is so easy to recongnize big money coopereations who dont care about being innovative, since when was soe innovative lately? Maybe they will with vangaurd but we will see, and just so you know eq2 has poor mechanics like vangaurd and we know soe employees where helping sigil right? Just throwing out that possibility, but one guy was right in here when he said that when someone takes over you get nothing but a bunch of idealists running around and the classic idea gets ignored and its true in many cases.
Anyways stop the nonsense guys whats done is done rather you like soe or not stop complaining about soe bashers and stop complaining about sigil bashers lets not start another one, lets just look foward to these other companys that will probably have very innovative games.
Finally SOE is going to do something with this game.Ive been wanting to play this title but ive heard so many bad things it scared me off. This is nothing more than Mcquaid NOT doing his job NOT providing leadership and generally taking the money and running.
So SOE had nothing to do with its development afterall they were just the cash source. Now let's see if the remaining development team can do something with this title.I played beta and im sure its gotten better.I STILL have high hopes now that SOE is involved.
Say what you will but the bottom line is this:Mcquaid dropped the ball and SOE has had to bail him out 2 times now.
Is this the scene where we round up our horses and run McQuaid out of town? Seriously...this man is getting to stay on as an "external consultant". I'm sure that's lawyer for "laid off w/ a paycheck".
Considering that 3/4 of Sigil's employees were artists...I don't think SOE was wrong in not hiring all of them back (this is from a strictly business PoV). It was Sigil's fault for hiring so many employees to begin with.
Honestly...SOE can only improve the game. What did SOE do the second they announced acquisition? Open official forums. That's right, SOE pays more attention to Sigil's fans than Sigil did.
Rofl I apologize if this offends you but I highly disagree soe actually cares about the fans, I think they only care about getting customeers not the fun or development of the game.
Rofl I apologize if this offends you but I highly disagree soe actually cares about the fans, I think they only care about getting customeers not the fun or development of the game.
Didn't say SOE cared about the fans. But they obviously care enough to open official forums for Vanguard which is something many fans had been asking for for months after it was discovered what a stupid, horrible idea not having OFs was. First thing SOE did was open up forums the second they were able to (which required purchasing Sigil).
They definitely care more about the fans than Mr. McQuaid.
EDIT: Frankly, regardless of how you feel about SOE, an NGE would actually improve VG compared to the overbloated beast it is now.
Rofl I apologize if this offends you but I highly disagree soe actually cares about the fans, I think they only care about getting customeers not the fun or development of the game.
You are kidding right? When it was getting ugly and us beta testers where screaming the loadest to stay in beta, Sigil closed down the official forums. It was full steam ahead. Day one when SoE takes over, they open official forums. Too me, that shows Smed does mean it and is willing to try. The community gave McQuaid and company nearly six years to get the game right, the least we can do is give Smed and Company a year to see what they can do with it.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
I can't say I didnt see something like this comming. I knew when sigil would not open an official forum it was a sign they didnt have the balls to run this game. VG is a perfect game to be put into the hands of SOE, It would be pretty hard to make even shittier, am I right. Either way, I seriously doubt I'll go back to that mess anytime ever.
IMO it's not a POS game. I enjoyed playing it and as I said I would have stuck around if not for the time consuming nature of it. The travel takes to long and there isn't enough solo content. If they fixed that I would play the game.
Originally posted by Samuraisword SOE had an equal hand in this mess. SOE staffers worked on Vanguard prior to release so they knew what kind of condition the game was in, yet they pushed for an early release and defrauded the public by marketing the game as complete and ready.
Money doesn't grow on trees. VG asked for SOE to loan out some devs and they did out of kindness. SOE and VG had a deal and a deadline. If Sigil couldn't get their act together after 4+ years of development and 30+ million dollars SOE certainly can't be blamed for the total screw up of this game when they came at the end. Especially late into development of VG when bills were piling up. Besides SOE had no rights to VG because Sigil maintained rights to the game and Sigil owed people ( i.e. staff, and other bills etc.. ) money. It was not SOE's job to finish the work Brad and Sigil didn't finish.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
This is not an official press release. This is prolly relatively reliable info input however, but incomplete. I was expecting Brad to do 1 expansion maybe, but seems like he is already on another project.
Anyone saying that "Brad isn't here for us" is obviously not knowing the guy. Brad is stubborn, he is "arrogant", often wrong, but, he is not the type of person to abandon you. That's been said, Brad is a dreamer. He is better in the early steps, then in the polishing steps.
Brad prolly saw the selling numbers, and no matter what, he prolly takes it personnally, extremely harshly. He might even has drink a little too much about this, I don't know the guy, but if he can drinks, I am sure he did over the number of sold boxes.
Been a Game Designer is harsh and unforgiving. Been a Lead Designer can turn into a living nightmare. See, Brad is human (until proven otherwise), and he prolly see something like: "You have become better at Game Designing(15)!" while dreaming since his EQ and EQ2 titles. He went happily to the next zone and when the Blizzard designers tell him: "WTF NUB, this spot is CAMPED!", he tried to pull from harder spots outside the camp, and he was duoing with Steve only, and they manage to kill 1 mob before they wipe...and he then log off for now. Disapointed.
The same Vanguard he releases, would he have include raid-free server by release, would have be a blockbuster despites everything else. But eh, tiny me can't convince him. I am at the Bazaar trying to buy gear and talking with all type of uber folks. I took the time to tell him what to do, to wait change a few things...but eh, he saw: Level 1 merchant. He didn't listen to me. *shrug*
Anyway, I hope to see Brad come back in a few year with a title, and some stuff he understand. Don't try to be loved by FoH, they don't deserve it. Core players was good. But core = PUGers, not raiders! If the raiders scorn ont he PUGs, they try to sound uber and all, but in fact, they hide their inability to make PUGs works and their lackness. Peoples who scorns on PUGs are not better, they are to weak to make PUGs works, they are the noobs who you somehow confuse for some uber players because they are not the noobiest players. A hardcore player is a guy, which you give him 5 players which are mostly noobs, and he manages to succeed...yeah they may wipe, but they will wins the day. Eventually, these 5 players will maybe be able to takes 5 others players...or they will join guilds and scorn at PUGs if they are not skilled enought. Core players are happy to see noobs owning and ruling some aspect of the game, even if they can't do any better themselves due to any game limits. Core players want everyone to master what they do, they don't try to get any exclusive reward only for themselves, unless these rewards have no impacts on most of the game except 1 aspect. See, the raiders, by defending this 20% exclusive rewards that make them better then everyone else in all the game aspects, they prove to you they are noobs, real core players would have ask only for gear that make them better at raiding and doesn't affect the soloers/groupers/casuals. A casual must be able to feel uber in a way or another, and Vanguard fails on delivering that. As in Vanguard, a casual is always subpar to a non-casual, lacking some gear, some stats, some spells...always missing something. A casual must have everything in order to rulez crushbone! Yar, nobody can outdo casual 006538 in Crushbone, cause he rulez! Cool, a core player smiles and finds that interesting...a raider cries.
If anything, Brad is the Lead Designer which talk the most to the peoples. He even go talk to Woody like a 5 years kid that is excited and groveling all over Woody. He is not perfect, he does many mistakes. But I do believe that the next game he will release, if he learn his lesson with Vanguard and is depressed enought, he can release a masterwork. But he must be put into place. He must be kept in check. He must have someone to limit him and makes him see closer objectives.
The raiders got what they ask for (even if they still claims they didn't, this is their nature). See what happens. Brad will hopefully matures enought to knows when to listen, and when not to. Will Brad comes back and release a good title in the future? Maybe, maybe not. How did the guy was affected, is he still in denial? Did he learn? Would he has total control of be kept under check? Those questions will determine if we will see Brad and if he will release a new EQ, or a new Vanguard.

Exactly !!! Every beta tester including myself who wasn't kissing Brad's ass was screaming that this game was not ready. People should freaking be glad SOE bailed out Sigil and published the game and that now SOE has bought out Sigil from Brad. Hopefully this game will get back on track and finally come out of beta !!! Brad offered up no freaking leadership or direction with the game and it shows. Even patches are a mess with Vanguard. SOE's experience and money should be a god send to Vangaurd fans and the overall state of the game.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Well it looks like it was just a matter of SOE coming out as a winner for buying a title for what should be a low price. Taking the guess that Sigil had too many debts and not enough income to payoff the debts and pay for operating expenses. So SOE steps in (since that had a hand already) and does a buyout. I would say that is a smart business move.
Now as to how Vanguard will be managed..
Easy.... Station access pass that sony has most of its games on... oh comeon... you guys really can't say you didnt see this comming? If you didnt... wow.

Funding runs low, and is left with no choice but to sell out.
New management is so heavy handed that the original idea is shot, which defeated the whole purpose of making it in the first place.
Cut and run.
This man hit the nail on the head... soe planned this from the beginning, why do you think they stopped funding brad and rushed the game out? Hell many gamers like me that got hosed by NGE predicted it (hell... look at their track record). They just want to add it to their station access crap... seriously... please tell me most everyone saw this coming?

Heh, I remember back before Vanguard was released it was being labeled as "the final nail in SWG's coffin." all over these forums. Looks like SWG survives another supposed threat Infact, SWG has even started picking up Vanguard refugees!
They WERE foolish enough to buy into complete, utter crap once. Why not again?
Gogo stationpass!
Exactly... at least someone gets it ^^

Could you be anymore clueless ? SOE was never responsible for funding Sigil other then the agreed upon cash influx they gave them when they agreed to sign up as a publisher. Seriously you sound like someone who just jumped on the "I hate SOE." bandwagon without understanding or learning the full history of Sigil, Vangaurd and the relationships with their publishers from Microsoft who dumped Sigil to SOE who saved VG. In the end VG was a total mismanagement that occurred at the hands Brad McQuaid.
After 4+ years and 30+ million dollars + SOE's cash influx and they still couldn't create a decent MMO game that was actually finished. Vangaurd was/is the Waterworld of MMO's.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Brushing aside the SOE-bashing and accuracy wars, I would also like to wish the said Sigil employees good luck. Another tragic tale of mismanagement strikes, from a grand dream to a bloaty incomplete product to the corporate nuke that smashes it all apart.
It's a good point that some of the previous posters brought up: people make mistakes, particularly Brad McQuaid. It's harsh to deprive him of a chance to learn about the harsh industry, should he ever did. And to the poster who fired at the Sigil employees for the results, don't forget the team leadership is the one that tells the team what to do. Like making the game a monster resource hog that's supposed to "go with the newer high-end machines".
Ah, well. At least I can tell my grandchildren the tale of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes as opposed to .kkrieger.
Brad boggled it with Verant.. Luclin was plagued with delas which eventually led to Brads ouster. from SOE
in this instance Brad was preceieved as the victim of the Monsterish Evil SOE
fast forward 5 years.
Brad gets another idea signs up with turbine via microsoft.. project goes under numerous delys. the timetable Brad himself projected was not met. Barely into Beta Turbine aka microsoft stops funding sigil. Where does brad go? to Soe who agrees to publih the game.... vangurd is added to station access. brad goes mia for five months and then sigil is disssolved and SOE buys the game. Brad sticks around as part time consultant.
see the pattern? one has to ask themselves if brad really has anything to offer outside of concept and storyboard
Have to agree here, SOE is certainly not the villan here. Brad McQuaid is just not a good game developer. He really does not understand the industry nor how to put a MMO together.

Saw it coming? Not really. Remember, SOE spotted Brad and Co. the rest of the cash that they needed to get the game going...it wouldn't be in their interest to torpedo their own investment. And don't tell me that owning the Vanguard IP makes up for it, since I'm sure the value of that has dropped like hell since release, due to word of mouth and low sub numbers. Nor have I heard anything about them wanting to use the VG art or code assets in one of their own projects. So your assertion that they set up VG to fail makes no sense at all, since VG was finished using their money, so sabotaging it would mean shooting themselves in the foot and taking a heavy cash loss for no reason at all.

They didnt stop funding him, they gave him the agreed on amount and he spent it without finishing the game.
Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:
GW2 (+LoL and BF3)
Ah, well. At least I can tell my grandchildren the tale of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes as opposed to .kkrieger.
in this instance Brad was preceieved as the victim of the Monsterish Evil SOE
fast forward 5 years.
He needs to find another line of work.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
