Doubt it, only 2000 US home users have computers that can run the game.
Thats stretching it too far. Its been said that if you can run Oblivion then you can run AoC, and im confident many people can run Oblivion even on low settings. And like any dev with 2 brain cells the game will have graphical options, so that people with machines that cost less that 2k USD can play it. Either case by the time AoC releases people will have had enough time to update their video cards and some ram. Im not too concerned about the requirements since im sure the devs have seen the fiasco with vanguard and its req. They can take a few notes and optimize their engine before launch (which theyve said their doing) and lets not forget the game would have launched last year but was pushed back almost another year so they can fix the engine, bugs.
If theyve used their time wisely i expect to see a game with relatively few bugs and a smooth engine.
Who the -_- is Conan? (Yeah i saw the he-man-ish movie with Arnold.)
Is this IP really known/popular? Barbarians are not so awe inspiring TBH.
agreed, unless the IP is known world wide its not the Next Big Thing. Hell I dont even want to play AoC now after watching the video of bunch of naked barbarian running around with poor animation.
True, Cleffy, but in August there will be millions of users capable of playing on their 360s. I think that AoC will do well for itself. I think it will do exceptionally well for itself once it hits the 360. Final Fantasy XI is still going strong, but has only a small following in America because it's steeped in the old-school (demanding) dynamics of past MMORPGs. It's a very Eastern RPG with lots of hurdles to get over. Just as the Xbox stayed afloat, and the 360 is doing well on shooters and other "Western" games, I think that AoC will be great for the 360 and vice-versa.
I'm interested in AoC for three major reasons. The first being the setting. I loved the Conan books as a kid and the mature, darker setting bodes well for me and my friends. WoW was a technical achievment above all else, but the universe just can't appeal to all of us. Second, the boundary pushing stance that Funcom has. They want faster leveling, more visceral gameplay, and more innovation (bar-brawling PvP?!). Finally, I'm really interested in being able to play an MMORPG on my 360. Something about lounging on my couch staring at my HD-TV, drinking beers and chatting on my headset .
qft What's with the Arnold bashing? The first Conan movie was great. I've read some of the Howard books and it definately follows the themes. Pick up the directors cut sometime, there is a scene where Conan discusses philosophy with Subati (sp?). Along the same lines of his prayer to Crom, the theme on how nobody remembers the fallen. Also the scene where Conan gets his sword from the dead king in the tomb. Director John Milius says in the commentary that the dead king is supposed to be Atlantean, suggesting that it's Kull, which is right out of Howard's books. In the long history of hollywood crapping all over established canon, I'd say that's a pretty good swipe at the real deal.
A.) Said philosophy scene was thin at best, and was cut out of the movie for a reason
B.) The very idea of praying to Crom is a huge violation of lore. Crom does not care about his subjects except in that they should die bravely, and if you pray to him, he is much more likely to kill you for displaying weakness than anything else. Conan, along with his entire race know this.
I'm not going to argue about whether or not Conan the Barbarian was a good representation of the IP. I just happen to think it was a quality film in the genre.
But let me ask you this. Conan the Destroyer's script was written by Robert Jordan, an accepted contributer to Conan cannon (pauses for lame chuckle). It had a bunch of direct references to the IP, Thoth-Amon, Skaless, Conan's style as the King of Thieves. Yet I think we can all agree it was a pretty crappy movie. Is this a case where some poetic license and a departure from the IP might be a good thing?
I certainely think endless debates over some minor point of continuity is about as useful to a games development as flogging a dead dolphin.
Darkfall Online is the next big thing, AoC is middle ground between current MMO and next-gen. AoC's hardware req will bump out a lot of casual gamers.
So you're saying the next big trend in MMORPGs is that we'll play imaginary games that never actually release, so we won't even need computers or Xboxes?
Interesting take on the genre, but I think you may be ahead of your time with that idea.

Look at me, I'm going to make idiotic vaporware conjectures about a game which has more proof of existance than Age of Conan. Good God man grow some balls. As far as we both know AoC could go down the hole before DFO. I was simply pointing out that if you contrast the "next-gen" features of the two games, DFO surpasses AoC. And no DX10 graphics don't count as a feature.
Darkfall Online is joke given its history (do you know it??) to 95+% of the gaming world until we're proven otherwise, that is either play tested or tested by players we personally know.
I will not be one of the first to play that game unless they have a Very long and Very smooth beta period before release. In no way does that title deserve anyone's trust.
I just want a game thats fluid with attacking, like ninja gaiden. Not much point in having interactivity if it isnt exciting in the least bit just because its way to slow paced.
if the people like you dont join (no offence but seen enough of that sort of thing on most MMO's chats), then im joining the AoC community... the game is our only hope, maybe Tabula Rasa too

I know plenty of it, I've had my eye on it for the past five years anyway. The beta probably won't be long because they're designing it so it won't have a shitty beta and retail release like current MMOs.
But what I said still stands, it has more info than AoC to prove its more likely to prevail, currently. The thought has crossed my mind that it'll go down like a few other attempts at a new type of MMO but even so. Sure Razorwax/Adventurine isn't a big name MMO business, but what have we been getting from big name companies thus far? Everquest cloned OVER and OVER again. Now I'm interested in a couple of new MMOs so if DFO doesn't come out for another few years that's perfectly fine. AoC is a nice stepping stone as is Spellborn and Tabula Rasa.
But again, I wasn't speaking in terms of reality, I was comparing the two via features. And well i guess I should clarify since some didn't seem to pick up on it, GIVEN THEY BOTH COME OUT, DFO exceeds AoC.
I've had enough of mmorpgs but i'll propally still give it a go. I would llike to see how dynamic and fun the combat is and i like how you talk to the npc. Apart from that it seems alot like other mmorpgs. Not sure if i want to go through lvling and repetative grinding again.
It will probally do well but i think most gamers will stay with wow for atleast 3 more years.
All these "Is this going to be the next big thing?" posts are really just a waste of time. VG, LOTRO and now AoC. No one knows what the public will go for, so why even speculate? Plus what's the definition of "big"? Does it have to get bigger than WoW to be considered big? Will anything ever get as big as WoW and who cares anyway? WoW my be the biggest game to date, but its not even close to the best imo. I don't care how big a game gets. If it sucks, i don't really care if it dies. If it's good, I hope it does well enough to be profitable. Part of a game's success depends on how big the company is that makes it and how much they promote it. A tiny company that has very little money can make a better game than a giant that can spend millions.
So the more important question imo is, will it be a good game? And since everyone has a different definition of what's good, that one can be argued over endlessly.
I have high hopes for AOC. However we must look at the facts. Remember Funcom is responsible for Anarchy Online and while it is imo the coolest mmo ever, it had a very rocky start.
The release was so bug ridden and laggy alot of the players left within the first few months. It took Funcom over a year to revive it and they never regained the player base that they had in the beginning because people were so pissed off at the state of the game in release. (Kinda like Vanguard now, Hell I am pretty sure AO was even worse than Vanguard).
Every expansion pack that has been released has also been buggy as hell taking weeks or even months to fix usually pissing the majority of players off in the meantime.
Add to this the fact that AOC is going to require a very high end computer that most people currently dont have and I think we are going to have another rocky release for AOC.
I sure hope I am wrong on this but the past history indicates otherwise.
just seen some gameplay on YOUTUBE and i gotta say havent been so excited since darkfall online. Since this game comes out sooner i cant wait. I know that graphics dont make a game its the content and gameplay (ALA Asheron's call) but this game SEEMS to have both. All i need to hear now is that ITEMS dont make the player its how the player uses his AVatar and i'll be sold.

Good for you, dont let the door hit you on the way out. Best you get the rest of the car park clean or your boss will be on your case.

It sounds like they have learnt from the past. Release date was pushed back for this very reason I think. That and they saw the train wreck beta-release of Vanguard I would imagine.

The fact that ITEMs won't make the man has been repeated ad naseum by both the developers in charge of item developement and the players on the forums.
imo gods and heros will be the next big thing. Especially as it has a minion system (max 6 minions you can have i believe). Bet this feature is copied by alot of new games..
Infact if warhammer 40k implement a minion system like that, that would be awesome

Knights who say Ni website!
AoC or Gods and Heroes are probably the two I will look out for most. Both look promising and ambitious.
AoC & WAR are the next big things. I just think for me WAR will pwn all.
GnH and TCoS are sleepers that may end up good.
Who knows, all these games could Mcquaid.
