Well if you disliked the original version of SWG, you will probably enjoy the NGE version. As for active servers Ahazi, Bloodfin, and Bria have some okay numbers.
QFE. Also, the SWG trial is now of the entire game, you're no longer limited to the small starter station.
Join Chilastra, Bria, Bloodfin, Ahazi or Chimaera (if you're Euro) if you prefer larger populations.
Bria is a pretty nice server. Dont let posters on this dot-com convince you that SWG isnt worth checking out. Its going to be very nice once they wipe out all of the vacant buildings in the coming weeks.
If you were ever curious about it, at least give it a shot after ch.6 goes live (this week). This is going to add quite a few nice things such as player story telling abilities and beast mastery (plust a LOT more, one of the biggest updates in a very long time)
honestly its one of the most content filled MMO's out there if you like sci-fi offering both planetary adventure and spacecraft combat.

I'm so sick of the community here toting EvE as such a great and wonderful game.
EvE sucks. It's boring. I get it. I have no trouble soaking up the ins and outs of the gameplay.
The crux of my issues with EvE is that the game just isn't fun.
You can mine... ooo loads of fun there. Park your asymetrical ship next to an asteroid and fill up a canister so you fly back to the station where your bigger asymetrical hauler is parked and then fly all the way back there, pick up the ore, turn around and go back to the same damn station and proceed to reprocess and sell your ore. Oh what depth and fun. <----- note the dripping sarcasm
You can take missions from the NPCs. Oh what a wonderfully clever and original concept. <----- again... soaking wet with sarcasm
You can explore. This consists of watching your ship fly for ever and a day.
The ships in that game just bother me. There are a handful of ships that look cool, but the oblong asymetrical, doofy-looking ships perform better and better stats.
Point and click kills me everytime. I don't care what game it is.
I'm sure all the RTS geeks out there cream their pants over EvE's gameplay, but I just can't stomach it.
And to all the people that throw that lame arguement that, "EvE is what you make of it"...
You can apply that same lame excuse to ANY game on the market. This does not constitute a rebutal that holds a thimble full of water. If your arguement as to why EvE is a good game is anything even remotely like that, I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

You aren't the community, you're a PART of it. They are trying to be helpful.
Personally, I love EVE. I hated it until I got into a PvP corporation.
I dislike LoTRO, but I'm not mad when people suggest that to other players.
Yea, plus its hard for any new comer to get into the game. I agree that Eve online isn't all that great, but if you like it, then i've got no business to say you cant enjoy it.

and no EA isnt making spore an mmo, i was just saying how great a mmo it would be.

Relax a bit
People can hype a game they like all day long and I don't care. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but every single time a thread is started about a SciFi MMO the EvE fanbois come out of the wood works to say that EvE is the end all be all game and can't be touched.
It's not a fun game. Which is why at max when you log on there's 30k people tops. And that's being generous.
Sure that's alot of people on at once on one server, but games with multiple servers have 3-4 times the subscribers.
Numbers don't lie, unless you're like SOE and count the station access players as regular subscribers.
If EvE was such a great game they would have a higher number of subs.
It's a niche game and it's just not that good.
It's kind of like when Christians stand on street corners and knock on people's doors to tell them how great and wonderful their religion is. It's great that they feel so strongly about their faith, but it's borderline invasion of privacy when they try to shove down your throat.
(If you don't live in the south, you probably won't understand this. If you do, I feel your pain and I hate when people come knock on my door when I'm trying to watch TV with my daughter and try to tell me how we're all going to hell because we aren't "saved")
Seriously though, you can look on almost every single section of these boards and you'll find a disciple of EvE trying to spread the word.
Sometimes people get sucked into it. They give the game a try and then they never play the game again.
I too am entitled to my opinion and I'll give it. So I don't have to "calm down". I'm all ready calm. I just disagree with the army of EvE zombies here.

I understand where you're coming from, but your logic doesn't make sense to me.
Just because a game has X amount of subs doesn't mean it's good or bad (this can only be decided by an individual). It only means it's financially successful.
Take WoW for example. The #1 MMO on the market. Look at the amount of people that have problems with that game. The entire argument "8 million players can't be wrong" is flawed. That is assuming every person is the exact same, and everyone will like the same things. We all know this is not so.
A player can hate something while someone else may love it. Look at games like Silkroad Online, or Runescape...Personally, I'd never waste my time with them. I tried them, and I found nothing interesting or entertaining, yet look at how many people play them. Sure, they're free, so okay, let's go to Auto Assault.
Auto Assault is not much of a success yet there are still players who play the game, and like it so much as to actually pay for it.
As for the "invasion of privacy" comment, like you said everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is what forums are generally for. Rather than screaming at a game because you personally dislike it, form a list of reasons why you dislike the game...Don't have to call people fanbois, trolls, etc. It will get your message across a lot more effectively, and people will respect your opinion more.
People who love what they do will tend to want to tell others about it...they are happy, and they want the world to know. Hell, even coming onto a forum and taking the time to suggest a game is beneficial to the community as a whole.
Here's a bit I decided to add about my thoughts on EVE.
I tried EVE three times...yes, three times over the years. I hated it every single time I played it, yet I heard good things about it from the forums. I picked it up and tried it again.
11 days into my trial, I was about to just hang up the idea for good. I had no interest or likes in the game...it was a boring grindfest for money. Then on day 12 something happened. I joined a PvP Corporation and the game did an entire 180. It isn't an action packed game. Like you said, it is for a niche market. There is a lot of number crunching involved, and there is a LOT of strategy when it comes down to territorial control, battles, even from a market perspective.
My point is, I hated EVE...I thought it was one of the worst MMOs out on the market. If I never read these peoples posts about how much fun they were having in the game, I would have never given it another chance. Now I love it, and I have the community to thank for it.
This isn't to say that everyone will like every game that is promoted on the forums. But it does show that the game must offer "something" that is entertaining players. Even if a game only had one sole subscriber, but he/she found it enjoyable, then there must be something to it that can't be dismissed.
Look I don't want to derail this thread anymore then we all ready have, but I just want to touch on one thing you posted.
I didn't just start spouting off about EvE being bad and not site examples. I did site examples as you'll see if you go back and read my original post. I can give a much more detailed list of complaints, but this isn't the thread to do that in.
Let's move on and get back on topic.
I apologize if I offended anyone.
I'm looking forward to the following SciFi MMOs:
-Star Trek Online (I'm kinda wishy washy on this one)
-Huxley (Really excited, but I feel deep down that it won't deliver)
-Tabula Rasa (My gut says more of the same and not very deep. We'll see.)
-Global Agenda (Looks awesome, the devs paint a nice pretty picture, but don't they all.)
As far as Stargate World's is concerned, I hate the show and spin off, so I'm not too hyped about the game. Maybe it'll be good though. I'll definitely give it a try.
I agree that EVE is boring. But as far as sci-fi MMO's out there, it's pretty much cornered the market. It is a gorgeous looking game, and the sense of endless space is pretty cool - but, I agree, a joystick-style control of flight would boost this game's "fun factor" ten fold. Dog fighting pirates in space when you are ACTUALLY controling your ship as you swoop through asteroids or ruined space stations would be very cool. Plus, it would add a level of skill to space combat and make it less about who's ship is better outfitted. Also, the whole fact that you can endlessly ram into other ships, objects, and space stations without suffering any vehicle damage sort of brings one out of the "feel" of the game (some more aesthetic ship design options would be cool too, considering the avatar creation is SO well done, only to have the face sit, motionless, for the rest of the game). Similarly, warping THROUGH planets kinda hurt the realism for me. Any how, in my limited experience with this game (only tried the fee trial a few times) it has the workings of a a great start, but needs to add/refine many things before it can be truly classified as "great" for other reasons than being the ONLY real sci-fi MMO out there.

I totally agree about the joystick controlled dog fights. That would indeed be a game I'd sink my teeth, money, and time into.
I loved SWG Jump to Lightspeed. I was disappointed that it wasn't totally twich based, but it was close enough and WAY more fun than EvE's combat. I loved flying my ETA 2 Actis Interceptor into a huge Gunship's blindspot and tearing it to shreds.
I also loved the fact that me and a few guildmates could pile into one ship and all work together. It was alot of fun.
I would probably still play that game if they hadn't of done the NGE the way they did.
I hate the controls now, I think the cheesy pictures of the original trilogy actors is lame. I miss the old skill based system and all the old classes, and no one on my friend's list even plays anymore, which stinks because I had a ton of people on my friend's list.
I'm so sick of the community here toting EvE as such a great and wonderful game.
EvE sucks. It's boring. I get it. I have no trouble soaking up the ins and outs of the gameplay.

LOL... You don't get it. Every single person who plays eve would agree that, mining, missions, and flying around with no purpose are boring. The people touting (not toting) eve here are doing it because of the awesome PvP, the freedom to do whatever you want, and the single shard world (along with the ability to actually influence that world as an individual).
Since Blizzard and their idiocy just completely dropped the ball on this one, I've been looking over what's available, and what's coming. The only Sci-fi mmos out are mediocre at best. Yes, Anarchy Online was great in it's day, but that day has been long over. Now, with an entire engine overhaul and gameplay revamp, that game could come back. But seeing as how they still, after many years, haven't even touched the horrendous character models, I seriously doubt that will happen. Eve, yeah, good game. But it's all spaceflight, and so complex that it'll take weeks of reading guides just to understand it a bit. SWG, I'm not sure about. I would perhaps give it a try if I would ever stop reading how the servers are so empty. The other rabble out there, all of that top down, 2d junk? They can keep it.
As for those in development? Tabula Rasa -- perhaps, might be decent. Star Trek -- comeon, has there ever been a GOOD start trek game? Stargate Worlds -- all we can do is hope.
Anyway, as you can see, I'm a bit pissed off that Blizzard just completely dissed the mmo community by not making a Starcraft MMO. We NEED that alternate reality. It's the time for it. I'm growing sick of seeing dwarves, swords, and dragons.
People can hype a game they like all day long and I don't care. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but every single time a thread is started about a SciFi MMO the EvE fanbois come out of the wood works to say that EvE is the end all be all game and can't be touched.
lol - All he said was and I quote, "Play eve?". You really need to chill out if you got all that from 2 little words. Just relax and play the games you want and let others do the same......you'll be a happier person.
I agree with the OP, there is definitely a need for a good sci-fi MMO. I too am sick and tired of Orcs and Trolls and the whole fantasy genre, it's played out, give it a break already.
I am waiting for Tabula Rasa and I truly hope it is good because it could very well be a jump start to the sci-fi MMO genre. If these new scifis turnout to be any good, it will only provide incentive to make/develop more or go back and revamp some old ones. Anarchy Online would be a perfect candidate for such a revamp. I have a Froob account that I play occasionally and the potential for that game with new graphics/quests/missions is so tremendous its astounding. Again, maybe if these new scifis kick off well Funcom will take another look at upgrading AO.
I tried desperatly to like EVE, even went to thier fanfest in Iceland, great devs, mature players, absoltely incredible presentation, but I have finally put it down. Too damn boring and as I am not big into PVP, it simply doesnt work for me. Yes many love it, but its a niche game. More power to them. Bye.
Lets just keep our fingers crossed that one of these new MMOs will work for those of us hungry (starving actaully) for a scifi MMO with depth, charater and a massive world/universe to explore and enjoy.
I'm so sick of the community here toting EvE as such a great and wonderful game.

For someone who tries to come off sounding superior you sure don't have a very high level of reading comprehension.
I stated before that it's a niche game and that if you're arguement comes close to sounding like your's does, may God have mercy on your soul. You are one of the people I'm talking about.
There's no world to influence. EvE is like the Matrix, flashy and shallow. At first glance the Matrix appears to be deep and have some underlying depth and symbolism, but once the trilogy is said and done it really isn't all that deep. EvE at first glance looks really indepth and complex, but in the end is just boring and stale. There's a few posters above who seems to have played EvE for awhile who also agree with me.
Awesome PvP- Yeah point and click is so awesome. It takes so much skill too. EvE's PvP is alot like WoW's in that it's way to item based. I don't care what anyone says, a person with a better outfitted ship will win against a person without, hands down, everytime. Sure you can get some newbs to run around and "tackle" bigger ships so your guys can cream them, but once again it's all point and click and there really isn't that much strategy involved.
The freedom to do whatever you want- Guess what chief. You have the freedom to do whatever you want in every single game and instance of your life. I guess EvE hasn't cornered the market on that either. /snicker
A single shard world (along with the ability to influence that world as an individual)- There's no world to influence. And as an individual, gimme a freakin break. No one person is going to influence anything without a big Corp of like minded people. And even if they do the EvE devs who play the game will just hand out ships and equipment to their Corp mates to get a leg up. Go ahead and complain about it, or say it doesn't bother you. The fact of the matter is that it happened and there were no consequnces and/or reprocussions for the actions of the dev or devs that participated in this kind of stuff.
Also, if you have to resort to grammar corrections and spell checking instead of addressing the heart of the matter, it shows how much of a fanboi you are by how upset you get. Keep nit picking cause I can make you eat crow all day long.
If EvE was such a great game there wouldn't be so many people who either don't like it outright, or just don't play it.
I don't dislike the game, I just think it's boring. I'm certainly not the only who feels this way about the game.
Can we move on now or are we going to derail this topic once again?
Well there's obviously no point in arguing with you kryo, you obviously experienced the full scope of EvE during your 14 day trial (or perhaps it was a year of carebearing in empire).
games that look good to me that are coming out are huxley, tabula rasa and fallen earth and if you really desperate you could always play phantasy star online
Well there's obviously no point in arguing with you kryo, you obviously experienced the full scope of EvE during your 14 day trial (or perhaps it was a year of carebearing in empire).
hmmmm...well now you're reduced to worn-out insults about a persons playstyle...how l33t is that?
Anyhow, EvE isn't a sci-fi MMO in my op/ed...for it to be really anything more than a pretty version of TradeWars 2k (yes, I am THAT old) you'd actually have to have planets to travel around on (on foot, no less), vibrant outposts/stations/towns with multiple aliens (not just different human skins), real storylines, and a real sense of being more than just flight-sim lite that you have to pay for every month.
Guess what? To most of the average players out there (neither hardcore PvP or PvE, but a little dabble in both), EvE sucks. If CCP turns the WoD Online into anything like EvE it will be a grave disappointment.
Now, on the whole Sci-Fi MMO debate...Earth and Beyond had promise but EA abandoned it to focus on it's "core" franchise (UO) and that's the real reason it went downhill. Don't ever fool yourself into thinking EA cares about anything other than UO

First, lets clarify why many here do not like the EVE proclaimers.
I actually like the game, but the people who prays its gospel have long since left the "fanboy" description far behind them, and they are still accelerating, I am not a fan of its community, nor do I care to learn all the rituals and I am certinaly not going to sacrifice any animals.
Just see how the game of the year awards went in this place, it was totally hijacked.
I avoid cults, however nice its contents I try to stay away.
Good game though and when they introduce real avatars I am sure its following will increase.
Now that is said, back to real sci-fi.
AO is still good, the graphics are dated and some of the mechanics feels clumsy in comparison to todays standards, it is in my opionion still a very good sci-fi MMO, one I have returned to time and time again since its launch.
SWG is a shadow of its former glory, but, that does not really make it bad, if you have not tried it before and do not know what they took away you migth very well like it.
I played Hostile space for quite some time, and allthough it looks like something from the early 90's I kind of enjoyed it in a weird way, I wont link it because if you see it or even try it chances are you will cast me of as a moron, hehe.
There is also Entropia universe, horrible in my opinion but some people like the RL cash thing, it is more of a graphical casino though, MMO style.
Fallen earth and Stargate worlds both look promising, Star Trek online fell of my radar when they said they would only have EVE type space combat, and mind you I am something of a trekkie.
Bioware migth be working on a KOTOR mmo, time will tell but this could be worth holding out for
There are rumours about a fallout MMO, or are these even confimred?
CCP and White wolf are doing a world of darkness MMO it seems, that will probably be more sci-fi then fantasy.
Thing is though, that a sci-fi world is inherently a lot more complex then a fantasy world and probably a lot harder to pull of well.
Huge cities, maybe even multiple planets, technology and weaponry, weapons of mass destruction amd whatnot that would all be part of a very intricate and complex system.
The post apocalyptic games migth have it easier were you can still have cool technology and gadgets while still being able to control and limit it within the storyline.
I agree though, a good sci-fi is very much needed.

"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
blah, EA should just make a Spore mmo, see how long it takes the whole world to go from single cell to the covenant
EvE sucks.

You aren't the community, you're a PART of it. They are trying to be helpful.

I dislike LoTRO, but I'm not mad when people suggest that to other players.

Spore? is EA making this? I saw this a while back, at first the video looks incredibly lame.. but just watch the whole thing. pretty impressive.
*edit* my bad, Spore is porting to PC first then to all consoles.. looks awesome

Yea, plus its hard for any new comer to get into the game.
I agree that Eve online isn't all that great, but if you like it, then i've got no business to say you cant enjoy it.

and no EA isnt making spore an mmo, i was just saying how great a mmo it would be.

Yea, i can't wait till some of these games have open betas, then you can definitely decide if its the game for you, all these games look promising =D
But then again I didn't like Lineage (except I think their art design is the best in the business)
Guess time will tell

LOL... You don't get it. Every single person who plays eve would agree that, mining, missions, and flying around with no purpose are boring. The people touting (not toting) eve here are doing it because of the awesome PvP, the freedom to do whatever you want, and the single shard world (along with the ability to actually influence that world as an individual).
in all seriousness check out
infinity
worth while, still in development though

lol - All he said was and I quote, "Play eve?". You really need to chill out if you got all that from 2 little words. Just relax and play the games you want and let others do the same......you'll be a happier person.Bren

Current Games: WOW, EVE Online

Can we move on now or are we going to derail this topic once again?
games that look good to me that are coming out are huxley, tabula rasa and fallen earth and if you really desperate you could always play phantasy star online

Dude... you ROCK!!!
