I've been following many titles that have come out recently and that will be released soon and I noticed a pattern. Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Fantasy (now copy what i said and push control v 90 times and that will be the accurate number of Sci-Fi and Fantasy Games out there). There are a few games that are a bit different like Guild Wars and CoH,CoV, but are basically following the normal MMO pattern. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas for new MMO Genres, what would their "genre" be named, what would be the objective, skill tree vs. purchased abilities, and how do you improve your character. Im interested to see your ideas because I'm at a loss.

Well you could make a MMO based on real life like the Wild West or World War 2. Other then that you have to come up with another genere because I haven't seen any others in the bookstore. Basically you have Fantasy/Sci-Fi/History/Present. I believe most people go for for teh Fantasy/Sci-Fi because it allows them more freedom to makeup whatever they want.
I guess I should add that Fantasy game makers have the option to makup whatever they want though they all seem to follow the traditional outline of Human/Dwarf/Gome/Elf/Orc/Goblin/etc. They could easily go and create a new race of mutant pink bunnies that are wipping out the human race. :P
Does anyone remember the old Microprose game "Darkland's"?
http://www.darklands.net/faq/0.html
It was set in Medevil Europe and had excellent lore and game play - it would make for a *great* MMO and open a new genre ( it was part fantasy but held to logical rules and had religious intervention, etc. )
Most fantasy MMOs are set in Midevil times though some stray from the path like WoW. I would also call priests/clerics/paladins casting healing spells and buffs similiar to divine intervention. They are holy people.
I believe you could get a lot more radical then that.

dang, i dont see 1 idea about a new genre, only a copy of something allready made.
OP: i have been thinking about the same thing, i also made a topic, i didnt find a answer to my questions... but i think it will be needed sooner or later that someone come up with a new genre of games.
maybe something like, GTA MMO ? build ur place, fight other gangs and all.... but still its also done just in a none mmo world.
tbh i dont got a answer, pm me if u get a answer some day
How do you kill that which has no life?
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
I was on wikipedia and saw this mmo about America's old 1800 times when Billy the Kid and Jesse James were around. I forgot what it's called, but it won't be released soon, I think...
Anyway, a game from like 15,000- 20,000 years ago(homo-erectus times) would be very nice. The reason there isn't is because we don't know enough about it. That is the same reason there should be. For examle, very little is known from the darkened medieval ages. Most of what everyone thinks of is made up by story-tellers, film directors, game designers, and so on.
Currently, I know of no game like with 'cavemen,' and I would wish to experiance one.
Wow, an old Western MMO actually sounds interesting. Yet, I'm not totally sure how inventive you can get with armor and other things for cowboys. But hunting for Bison and fightin the Law is actually a very good idea and im not sure why no one has tried it. PvP may be a little tricky.
Maybe they could make a MMO when Columbus or the Vikings came over and met the indians in the Americas. You could be an English colonier (colonier???), or spanish, or french. Or maybe you could protect your homeland and be an indian from many different tribes (Mayan, Cherokee, Incan).
Or maybe they could use Civil War and with all that history written down and the homeland right out our backdoor the "lore" would be easy to find and very extensive. You could actually do quests that were performed in real life. PvP SHOULD also be easy considering North Vs. South.
Or they could make an MMO for present day events (no im not considering something like Sims Online here). But like a GTA MMO like someone already considered. Fight with rival gangs (guilds) and take over different hoods. They could probably make that one with the same structure as Guild Wars but with a new modern twist. But, like the cowboys, it would be hard to be inventive with armor.
There is also room for fictional ideas like Humans walking with Dinosaurs (who knows maybe it actually happened) and some how making a MMO out of that. Maybe making an MMO about WWII but with a mutant twist like the console Castle Wolfenstien game. These are all good ideas people keep 'em coming.
I'd like to see an MMO with Werewolves, Vampires, and Magic.
I'd like to see a Shadowrun MMORPG.
There are a few Spy themed MMOs that are being developed and one of them looked simply amazing. I can't remeber the name of it, but I'll go look it up and post it here in a sec.
Guild Wars IS a fantasy game..
Oh and i would like to see an One Piece MMO.
I'd shure do
Global Agenda.
If you get a chance go to their website and look at the gameplay footage. It's awesome.
Wait. The footage might be on Gamespy or Fileplanet.
I'll find it, and then link it in a new thread so I'm not hijacking this one.
American Wild West (Hollywood TV/Movie Style)
Darkest Africa (Edgar Rice Boroughs) Tarzan/lost tribes/hunters/treasure/lost cities/explorers
Retro Sci-fi late 1800's (Jules Verne) 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, etc
I would like to see a WESTERN MMO (done properly). I’ve played every western based computer/video game I’ve every come across and all were very shallow and done poorly.
There are ample sources of historical documentation to inspire a truly creative development team to develop a Western MMO that would please most MMO play styles.
You have examples of solo play when you look at the unknown drifter that is fast with a gun, or skilled trappers/hunters of the Northwest that were known for their stamina and survival skills. You have ample material to supply RvR or PvP to a western, when you look at conflicts between Indian tribes, Indians and the U.S. Cavalry, cattlemen and farmers, outlaw bands and posses, Texas Rangers or even the Pinkerton men. There are also the classic “High Noon” duels out in front of the saloon and look out for the PK that bushwhacks you from an outcropping of boulders.
There is also ample inspiration for crafting when you look the boom towns that were created by presence of copper, silver, gold, or cattle and the railroad. There any number of crafting professions that player could enjoy: prospector, blacksmith, gunsmith, carpenter, tailor, farmer, cattleman, cook, trapper, snake oil salesman etc.
There is also inspiration for guild support, when you look at some examples like, the “Hole in the Wall” gang style hideout, Indian villages, the U.S. Cavalry outposts, or a Cattleman Assoc. building. There are also mini-games that could be created for the saloon environment like faro. Faro was by far the most popular and prolific game played in old west saloons, followed by brag, monte and several dice games such as high/low (also called over & under).
I could go on and on about the possibilities of quests raids, classes, etc., but I’ll spare you from that.
"Don't corpse-camp that idea. Its never gonna rez"
Bladezz (The Guild)
Yes, that is why i wrote that guild wars was a little different (fact that they tried guild vs. guild) but that it basically followed same fantasy pattern
Western MMO Looks good, now just need to pick a company to build and run it... SOE, Blizzard, Turbine come to mind.. maybe a smaller company who can focus mainly on this new Sub-Genre and continue to build of its hopeful success
Modern setting, with a fantasy/sci-fi/supernatural twist. A MMO genre that is plain few in number.
Transformers is an example of that sci-fi twist when combined with our modern vehicles, Persona series show how that supernatural twist with demons in modern world is done. There are many ways to this, and seriously novels do it more often anyway.
How about a futuristic MMO taking place in a gigantic city but with a 1930s setting?
I mean the future as they saw it in the 1930s.
It could be fun.
and umm... steampunk.
MMO genres:
Horror RPG
20's Gangster/Mafia RTS or RPG
Wild West RPG/Sandbox
Competative city building (Sim City Online, Rollercoaster Tycoon Online)
