A.) War has not even released yet.

B.) You can choose what many consider to be a black skin tone in WoW, and LOTRO. WoW doesn't have an option for nappy haired afro's though so that might suck. LOTRO has hair styles that can blend in well with a "darker" skinned character. Both games do not have many if any "Asian" faces I think but I may be wrong in this regard.

C.) There is no lore in GW games that states there are not people of color in the Empire even though the Empire represents an early renaissance period in Germany. Of which in the real world there were certainly records of people of color in that country as well as in France and a few other European nations living at the time.

If you are talking about other human empires well they have Asian styled empires of Cathay, Nippon and Araby ( Arab style Empire )but you won't be playing in any of them because they are not the main focus of the game and there is not a whole lot of lore for them. I suppose you can play a character that had his/her family migrated to The Empire and has established long standing roots there and they are a person of color. That wouldn't go against the lore because I doubt human populations in WAR as in our own world are/were static populations when it comes to patterns of travel, trade, migration, and exploration, etc....

D.) The darker skinned people in the LOTR were from the Haradrim ( the southern areas below Gondor and Mordor ), Umbar, and a few others places who's names I've forgotten that were part of Sauron's forces in the books and the movie. Some Gondorian's were considered to have "dark" skin because of the intermixing at the the very southern edges of Gondor realm as Umbar was a off and on again province of Gondor which extended near to the Haradrim.

That'd be a good point if those games where MMO's. Try to grasp at those straws a little harder.

I can see where the OP is coming from. Imagine this. Ok you buy a game load it up wait there for an hour or 2 to download the rest of the game and client. Typical MMO stuff right. Whew, all done with that, now for the exciting part of logging in for the first time. Time to customize my character. WTF, I can only be BLACK. Ok I guess I will have to try and find the lightest skin tone so I can try to be a white character but even then I will still be brown.

We should all try and be simpathetic because even if he gets the skin tone the facial details will still be wrong. DDO is the only game I played that allowed you to be black.

I am a white guy and I think I would crap my pants if I couldn't play a white character but if your black you just need to suck it up because the lore doesn't support it? BS.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

I find very funny how whites dont waste time with this kind of coments and run directly to do 2 things:

1.- Make jokes about it, and minimize the treat.

2.- Say: there is no racism nowadays and also state that they should not feel guilty about it, since slavery is a thing of the past.

Now... how hypocrite since this are the same whites not wasting any little oportunity to show off about how America saved the world from Nazis... so let me get this straigh, you can be proud of what you "did" good (actually Rusia won the war, every serius WW2 reading says so), but you should not be ashame fo what you did wrong... LAME.

This is what I felt in the Guild Wars expansion NIghtfall.

I could still pick white as a skin color, but I looked like an albino black dude.

But it seems most games coming out will allow you to edit your face ala oblivion, so you can actually looks white/black/whatever.

Well white people are inherently racist, so please dont judge us thus being racist yourself; since you dont have an excuse.

Im white-hispanic.  I just have a problem with white-anglo (mostly conservative) selective memory, often called hipocrecy.

Just had to answer to this mate :)

In Tolkien books dark humans are servants of evil. Look the third movie when Frodo and Sam stand next to the gate of Mordor.

They roll down the mountain and land in front of feet of two Saurons soldiers. They wear lot of clothes. But look closer and you will see thay are black people , they are called Haradrim

Eve and Guild Wars both have distinct asian and black options. Shadowbane let's you make characters so black the only thing you can see are their eyes.
eq 1 AND 2 both have and have had for a long time, "black" characters (humans)

I havent bothered to read past the first post so excuse me if this has been said.

LOTRO did infact have black characters. Choose a human then make them from gondor or rohan. Both have dark shades and one has a really dark shade of skin

    WoW had black humans.

    UO had black humans.

umm... GW, Shadowbane, theres tons. Maybe just because you never tried to make one you assumed you couldnt?

I hope your children all marry black people.

    With all duerespect Coolguy20,

don't forget that Tolkien, Howard and Lovecraft wrote their books in a time there was no political correctness yet. Rascism towards or 'inferioriy' and 'being tainted' of people with darker skin were commonly accepted (I'm not advocating any of this, mind you); it's no surprise that writers during that time kept those standards to a certain point in their creations. With most of today's western fantasy settings based largely on Tolkien's works, which means a bastardised Celtic-Scandinavian mythology, the trend continous in a way, because they shy away to deviate from these foundations. And to end; most of those settings are set in dark ages where there's a lot of suspicion towards anyone that doesn't look, think, act, believes like the rest. Political correctness is non-existant in a time of strife, war and superstition.

The Warhammer IP for instance is one of those settings that heavily relies on political uncorrectness. It's what actually makes the world and lore feel more alive. Humanity's flaws are more interesting to story and RP than Hello Kitty characteristics.

Then on your OT, I'd say it depends a lot on the setting of the game. Personally I couldn't give a rat's ass if my avatar doesn't resemble myself; if the setting would only allow insect avatars, I'd play insect avatars. There used to be an African-Morish MMO in development, something I was looking forward to because it broke away from more 'traditional' settings. In the end you play/RP a personae in the setting the game offers. If a setting were to change it's uniqueness just to abide for the sake of political correctness, it's credibility and immersion would crumble like a shoddy build cardhouse.

but then again i come to vanguard and vanguard did it very well not only did it allow the exact race not just a skin shade, not only that but blacks in that game started in a african like setting so did the arab like race, the asian started in a asian type setting it was neat, vanguard could of been AWESOME. Too bad the developer didnt care about the game.

Well, in WAR we have Chaos Humans, who are basically Celtic Barbarians/Vikings. There were no black Vikings. They're People of the North, read the Lore.

Then, the other Human race is the Empire, which is a european/germanic Culture, again with no black People.

It's the lore, it has nothing to do with racism.

There are black People in Warhammer, but in none of the Races WAR will feature initially.

I mean its just soly black people i mean any race besides anglo saxon.
  • Coolguy20Coolguy20 Member Posts: 250
How do we exactly know there wernt any black people in bree or those other towns, just because they were not shown in the movie doesnt mean they didnt exist.
  • Coolguy20Coolguy20 Member Posts: 250
Arabics are still dark, this isnt a black peoples only post but goes to any race besides the original anglo saxon in every mmorpg. Besides the north africans use to raid europe during medieval times also they wernt just slaves. Such as probably not a good example i dont know since its not medival but in southern italy north africa use to raid it and some would even live there.
