Why Are People So Excited About Dark and Light!?

OracleP4OracleP4 Member Posts: 495

Why on earth are there so many people on this forum that are so excited about Dark and Light, I've taken a look at the game and the website and it looks pretty mediocre. It doesn't seem to offer that much that we haven't already seen in many other MMORPGs.

I can understand the excitement that a lot of people here have regarding WOW, EQ2 and GW. But Dark and Light?? I don't get it, can someone please explain why they are excited about it? Please give at least one tangible reason, not just "DNL ownz0r, WOW sux0r", etc.

    "DNL ownz0r, WOW sux0r"

    .......

    Just kidding....

Anyways, why do folks need to have a "tangible" reason to like it? Just because it doesn't have a huge developer and publisher backing it up? Keep in mind that just because "it looks pretty mediocre" to you doesn't mean it can't look really awesome to somebody else. Everybodies mind ticks differently.

    I'll shoot though.

It may not offer that much that we haven't already seen but in reality that sounds like almost all the upcomming and recently released MMOG's on the market to me. It's a tried and true genre and setup. I haven't followed it too extensively but I'm eagerly awaiting it along with the rest of the upcomming games.

    My "tangible" reasons:

It's a new MMOG. Massive PvP? Huge seamless(?) world? And the world looks pretty neat, not to mention the game lore has been some good reads. Sounds like some innovative and fun methods of transportation to boot.

Neocron was one of the best MMOGs i've ever played, it had a horrible publisher, and since has almost died from lack of population. The publisher could not be worse if they were PAYED to kill the game...It still has a couple thousand sticking to it but it's dying...all because it has a horrible publisher.

    I will tell you.

    1. New server technology - The game will be on one (yes one!) seamless server cluster with no limits on the number of players it can handle since it is based upon the new BigWorld technology server engine (http://www.bigworldtech.com/news.php). This server cluster also has dynamic loading meaning that the CPU load on each computer in the cluster is evened out. This means large PvP battles anywhere with no lag from the server side.

    2. PvP with a purpose meaning that clans will fight to control territory to gain resources, trade, or other strategic reasons. This means lots of player made dynamic content in terms of settlement, politics, wars, etc.

    3. Dynamic territory definition. This game has two sides or alignments, the Dark and the Light that can fight each other. Each has to feed mana fountains certain resources in order to define its territory since the power of the mana radiates outward a certain distance. Mana buffs characters of the same alignment while nerfing characters of the other alignment. So while PvP fights in neutral territory will be even (you gain experience points for player kills just like MOB kills) to take over an enemy territory will first require disabiling the mana fountains by a sneak attack or by cutting off its source of supply.

    4. Defense-in-depth: While mana fountains can be taken in a surprise zerg attack any smart clan will develop its lands far behind the frontier where it will be safe from this sort of thing. It takes time for a mana fountain to come on-line for the opposite alignment and a chain of mana fountains of the same alignment is needs to portal in supplies and fighters. So a clan will have lots or warning if its land is being targeted for takeover. Zerging is also minimized since players can turn their character into an NPC to help defend their clan's fortress and surrounding town.

    5. Solo play as well. You can be a peaceful crafter safe behind the frontier helping supply the mana fountains for social experience points. While most resources are MOB drops some come from mines that must be found by brave explorers who can then sell the locations. The mines do not produce forever.

    6. Player based economy to provide incentive for politics and PvP. It has central markets for all natural resources so fighter don't have to guess on a selling price. The game also allows crafters to hires NPCs for their shops.

    7. Very little level ginding or mining grinding (like EVE-Online) since most of this is automated. Players will be moving all the time.

    8. Ten kingdoms of increasing level difficulty. The poblem in PvP games is that you have to level up high in order to do PvP. Not in Dark and Light since one can participate in PvP in the lowest level kingdom once out of the noob towns.

    9. Natural PvP Roleplay. In most PvP games roleplay is sacrificed to the demands of power. In Dark and Light roleplay is integrated first into the alignment system, second into clan specialization. In PvP games you are identified by your clan and not your race but in Dark and Light certain races will be better at fighting, crafting, exploring, etc. and these races will tend to cluster into clan types that give bonuses to those same characteristics.

I think that is enough for now image

    42 tardeskills.
A world of 40.000 Km (bigger than all other MMOGs)
A really great PvP system and awesome grafics.

I think you have only seen one time the website and then you posted this.

The only game similar to Dnl is dragon empires, but dragon empires have a smaller map and not so good graphics. But of course both have a lot of tradeskills and pvp.

I love it because you can surf on your shield!

    Just kidding. ::::40::

It's a very promising game with a lot of nice "promised" Features. If it will be as good as i hope it will be only time/release will tell.

IT's more than just another MMORPG though (as WoW will be).

Don't get me wrong: I think WoW could be great (am not in beta so i can't say yet) but so far it looks like a classical mmorpg. If they do it right and if the quests are fun (I read they are) i'll be a happy camper in WoW until D&L comes out.

All of the above is exactly why I am excited about Dark and Light.  I just hope it comes out soon!

I like it a lot too. I think things like extensive weather system and all the silly little things to do like sky diving and sliding on shields are just what most MMORPGs are lacking. Plus class system and PvP seem to be nicely made too.

Now, does anyone know when this comes out even approximately?

  • jimothypetrojimothypetro Member Posts: 1,437

Yea Dark and Light is the MMORPG I'm looking foward to the most.  It looks like it will be a fun PvP game without too bad of a level grind.

But I still think Wish will be the best game coming out.. if the devs can pull off what they say they can, it will be pretty sweet. :)

From the screen shots the glider is up very high. This suggests lots of new tactics in the form of air assults. Get a squad up on a mountain and have them swoop down on a mana fountain while a ground team acts as a diversion. Or use them for recon or for interdicting the automated trade caravans that the devs say can be set up to supply towns and fountains.

Lots of questions though. Will any sort of fighting be allowed during gliding? What about crashing into another character to bring him down. Will character weight (armor) affect glide range. Will wind speed and direction affect glide range? Will mountains produce updrafts for real long range gliding?

A game like DnL, GW or some others should get a +1 from me, they are by no way my type of game, but they are very honest from the start and I wont waste time there and then complain about lack of sologroup carebearish focus!

I don't know exactly why i am looking forward to it, like people say i got a hunch that this will be a very nice game with a great community and a lot of features that i hope will be in and working.

EQ and WoW are very big names but this can be a sleeper hit, kind of the underdog.

I remember back in the day when a game sounded so promising. i didnt want to play any other game on the market. Graphics in the screenshots looked soooo good nothing could compare. I mean, you could play VAMPIRES!. The game concept was amazing! OH WAIT!. Game was nothing but hype. That game was Horizons. The biggest disappointment I have ever seen. They butchered the original concept of the game.

So the lesson here is dont portray any game as the game to kill all games. Will only make it worse in the end. image

I don't know why you said DnL isn't offering much that we haven't already seen in MMORPGs? It's offering lots of new features and ideas that have either never been done before or haven't been done right.

To me, most of the other upcoming MMORPG's are the ones not offering much that's new. They're all cookie cutter besides the settings. They seem boring in comparison.

DnL is gonna rock when it's released. It will be the new MMORPG standard that future developers will look to for ideas.

haha. I didn't even notice that until you said it. Anyways . . I think this game will do alright. It most likely will not do as good as WoW or Eq2 but still it will be a pretty good all around game.

I like the idea of tradeskills, not all is about fighting and be the strongest. This brings more gameplay to a game, that's is one of the things i missed in City Of heores and Ryzom, they lacked the craft/mason/... persons. I like building because everyone can go and kill a beast but how will know? Building last (hopefully) long(er).

I wanna be an entrepeneur image make much money have a nice and way to large ESTATE and i wanna have mercenaries to fight for me perhaps even be a duke or something. can't wait.
