I asked this in another thread which seems to have been deleted. I was curious what people might say about it so I'm re-asking it here.
What if the graphical look of characters were linked to the character's stats such that the higher your strength the more muscle bound your character looked.
HIgh strength in a male character would make him look like a real life male body builder. No problem, right?
And high strength on a female character would make her look like a real life female body builder. Hmmm, not so appealing.
Do you think that the majority of people who play female characters would avoid a high strength stat in order to avoid the "butch" look? I'm really curious what people think about this.

As a woman, this is kind of insulting, just because you don't like strong women doesn't mean everyone doesn't..

Strong legs, muscly thighs and a big tight muscle bound arse. With a long slim tender body and slightly oversized breasts ................... a bit like 99% of female chars in all MMORPGs at the moment in fact!
If I give the impression that I'm a sad twisted pervert, that's because I am.

As a woman, I would have no problem buffing up her strength to make her look butch. In fact I think it would be great. I've played female warriors in some mmos and it has always bothered me that they have such stick thin arms.
can't speak for majority, but i would like that. it makes sense
Oh gee, how constructive. Let's just jump in and start smacking people around with the PC grievance maul of +10 censorship. You don't have anything better to do than get offended at a perfectly harmless question?
As to physically strong women, the modern female bodybuilders bear no resemblance to what an actual, healthy female looks like when she does resistance training. You may be too young to recall Rachel McLish and the bodybuilders of the 60's and 70's before all the females started getting testosterone augmentation and trying to like like miniature men.
Women looked excellent when resistance trained then, like women with curves and everything.
I liked playing an Orc female warrior in WoW, they looked very muscular and I found it to be a very hot look.

No, just trying to point out that he is trying to think for everyone, insunuating people think strong women are gross. Really stupid question. No I am not actually insulted, lol...

I like the idea of physically displaying stats like strength, although I don't think any other stat would show physically other than strength, intelligence, constitution, agillity and wisdom maybe, but that is more a result of the personality traits that are commonly associated with those stats or a generalized body type ( like only skinny people are agile, which isn't true) than any physical change.
But I am not a fan of ripped people, male or female, so yeah I think I would avoid playing a really high strength female character, but I would avoid playing a high strength male too, because in my opinion, six pack abs and veiny arms doesn't look good on anyone.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

bwahaha, QFT.An actual strong female (not someone who just tries to build muscle mass) would be a lot like what we have in games now like others have said.
Actually, I don't think that is true. Female body builders look the way they do because of how they are working their body and a specific look they are trying to sculpt.. If you really want to get a more accurate view of what a strong woman looks like you might want to look at a gymanst or rock climber.
for instance, this woman; http://www.explorersweb.com/sitemedia/TSthumbs/everest/20060801xlinn.jpg has muscle but in no way looks like a body builder.
Body building is not about strength, it is about a commericalized view of what strength "looks like".

I didn't mean to be insulting or anything. It just seems to me that people do care what their characters look like and I wondered about this. If playing a physically strong female character meant that she had to look like a tough broad instead of an anorexic barbie doll I wondered what the reaction would be.
It's true I was thinking it would make people tend to avoid it but maybe I was wrong. That's why I asked. Maybe it would only make teenage boys and dirty old men avoid playing females with high strength.

I think they would. Except for the teenage boys or dirty old men. And remember, strong women don't have to look like thugs or "beefed up". They just have a lot more muscle definition and of course a bit more muscle. But because they have low testosterone they will not become huge by just being active.

Well, on the subject of what strong women look like. Ah, this is probably a touchy subject.
But assuming a female character with max strength equal to a male character with max strength it only seems logical to me that if the strength is going to be displayed graphically then the female should have just as big muscles as the male. And generally look a little bulkier all over because of it (except maybe in the face).
If reality were graphically represented, would anyone play anything at all?
Hmmm, I've never been bothered about exact physical appearances of a female character in an MMO, I know they don't have huge muscles as warriors but in all honesty who cares?
We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.
i dont get this anti reality thing...the two can sit perfectly well besides each other like in books you can have non fiction and fiction, they dont cancel each other out just offer up different things, we dont always want to live in high fantasy worlds. im fed up of these dragons and mystical crud...its like stepping back in time or something a hyper reallity mmo would be awesome like gta.
Let me try to clarify this a bit. I'm not asking what any of you as individuals would want or not want. I'm not asking what's realistic or not realistic. I'm not asking if mmorpg games should or shouldn't do this. It's really more of a human psychology question.
Let me rephrase it with a little visual imagery for you all.
The strength stat has a direct effect on the look of your character's body. This effect is exactly the same for male and female characters.
A male character with a max strength stat will look like Arnold Shwartzenegger at the pinnacle of his body building career. Except for hair style, hair color, face, and skin tone variations.
Now imagine a female character with a max strength stat. Take that same Arnold body, give it a female head, stick some boobs on it...and there you go, that's your max strength female character.
Now, just for the sake of speculation, let's assume that a mmorpg worked this way. What I'm asking is would this have any significant impact on the number of people who play maximum strength female characters?
I give you example A:
I'm pretty sure she has a lot of strength and I find it appealing.
Doktar - 70 Troll Priest - Perenolde
Also, a lot of male avatars are geared towards the muscle-bound men with big eyebrows. I don't find this visually appealing. I almost never play a "beefy" male character. If a class required my male character to look "beefy" I would probably play a leaner class.
Example B:
I am not sure what is appealing abotu looking like a WWF wrestler while casting magic missle. I would much rather play an "every man".
Example C:
Although he doesn't look like much he'll drop you off a building. Much more appealing to play than some muscle bound guy .
Doktar - 70 Troll Priest - Perenolde
I highly doubt that a "max strength" fantasy character would look like Arnold Sasfasgdfhsdhdfh. The life of a body builder never includes swinging a sword around and fighting dragons with fireballs. Body Builders spend their whole lives training to be at the top of the body building game. This means that they work muscles that a warrior in the hills would never work. How many times a day do you think an warrior stops to do crunches? Not very often. They are too busy trying not to get their head caved in.

I'm just quoting this again so everyone can see the example again....such a...nice example..

I don't even know why people even think muscles on a woman is attractive, it's disgusting. If you want to put "it" in, go find yourself a post-op with huge muscles.
I think whenever you think of a max strength female character we all end up thinking of a woman version of arnie taking excess steroids. You wear armor in the game anyway so it'd be a bulky female, nothing wrong with a female body builder, I mean they don't have to carry pepper sprays around, lol.

Your trolls aren't even that funny. The +10 cooking for women made me smirk, but these are all so overtly offensive that you are just reaching. Go troll the Runespace thread. I'm sure you'll get some nice flame war going.
